Chapter 2: The Man at the Gate
The SUV's driver was Daniel Mercer, Brooke's husband of nine years.
I had known Daniel almost as long as I had known Ethan. He was a quiet, disciplined man who owned a successful commercial construction company and rarely spoke unless he had something worth saying.
Unlike Ethan, Daniel never needed to dominate a room.
People simply listened when he entered one.
He stepped away from the SUV wearing a navy suit, his tie loosened and his phone in his hand. He looked toward the house first, then toward the pool deck, where the emergency lights were flashing.
His eyes settled on Brooke.
She stood beside Ethan, wrapped in a white towel, her wet hair hanging against her face.
Daniel stopped walking.
For several seconds, the only sound was the alarm.
Then he looked at me.
“Lauren,” he called, “what happened?””
I glanced at Ethan.
My husband had already begun moving toward the steps leading into the house.
“Ethan,” I said.
He stopped.
“Where do you think you're going?””
“To get dressed.””
“You can do that after we talk.””
Daniel approached the gate, entered the code he had used dozens of times when visiting our property, and walked inside.
His gaze never left Brooke.
“What's going on?”” he asked.
Brooke swallowed.
“Daniel, I can explain.””
He looked at her towel, then at Ethan's bare chest, then at the two empty lounge chairs beside the pool.
“Explain what?””
She looked at me desperately.
I lifted my phone.
“The cameras recorded everything.””
Daniel's eyes shifted to the screen.
Ethan stepped between us.
“This is a private matter,” he said.
“There's no reason to involve anyone else.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You're standing beside my wife in a swimming pool with no clothes on, and you're telling me this is a private matter?””
Ethan's mouth tightened.
“You don't understand the situation.””
“Then explain it.””
Nobody answered.
Daniel took another step forward.
“Brooke?””
She began to cry harder.
“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.””
Daniel let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
“That's interesting. Because from where I'm standing, it looks like it happened exactly the way you wanted it to.””
Brooke reached for his arm.
He stepped away before she could touch him.
“Don't.””
The single word seemed to frighten her more than shouting would have.
Ethan seized the opportunity to move toward the house again.
Daniel turned sharply.
“Stay where you are.””
Ethan froze.
“You don't get to give me orders on my property,” he snapped.
Daniel looked around at the pool, the mansion, and the security cameras.
“Then perhaps you should have thought about that before bringing my wife here.””
I watched Ethan's expression change.
He had expected Daniel to be embarrassed, perhaps angry enough to argue, but still concerned about keeping the scandal quiet.
He had miscalculated.
Daniel turned to me.
“May I see the footage?””
I hesitated for only a moment before handing him my phone.
“It's from the pool camera,” I said.
“The emergency alert saved the recording automatically.””
He watched without speaking.
The video lasted less than a minute.
It showed Brooke arriving through the side gate shortly after noon. It showed Ethan meeting her beside the pool. It showed them laughing, touching, and kissing.
Then it showed Ethan pulling her toward him as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
Daniel watched the clip twice.
When he finally looked up, his face had gone strangely still.
“How long?”” he asked.
I shook my head.
“I don't know.””
He turned to Brooke.
“How long have you been sleeping with him?””
Brooke pressed the towel against her mouth.
“Daniel, please.””
“How long?””
“Three months.””
The answer seemed to travel across the pool deck like another alarm.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Three months.
For three months, I had sat across from Ethan at breakfast while he checked his phone beneath the table. For three months, I had listened to him complain about work and watched him leave the house with a kiss on my cheek.
Three months of ordinary mornings built around a lie.
Daniel lowered my phone.
“Did you meet him here?””
Brooke nodded.
“Sometimes.””
“Sometimes?””
Her silence answered for her.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Did you ever come to my house?””
Ethan's face hardened.
“I'm not discussing my marriage with you.””
Daniel took a slow breath.
“No. You're discussing your actions with me.””
Then he turned back to Brooke.
“Get dressed.””
She stared at him.
“What?””
“Get dressed. We're leaving.””
“Daniel, please. Don't do this in front of them.””
He looked at her wedding ring.
“You weren't concerned about an audience when you took off your clothes in another man's pool.””
Brooke flinched.
Ethan moved closer to her.
“Don't talk to her like that.””
Daniel slowly turned his head.
“Excuse me?””
“She made a mistake,” Ethan said.
“There's no need to humiliate her.””
I almost laughed.
The audacity was breathtaking.
Ethan had kissed another man's wife in a pool surrounded by cameras, and now he was defending her dignity as though he were the only honorable person present.
Daniel stared at him for a long moment.
“Are you defending my wife because you care about her,” he asked, “or because you're afraid of what she'll tell me?””
Ethan didn't answer.
Daniel nodded once, as though the silence had confirmed something.
I took my phone back.
“You should know,” I told Daniel, “that the footage is backed up to our security account. This isn't the only recording.””
Brooke's head snapped toward me.
“What do you mean?””
I opened the camera history.
The application showed a list of saved clips from the previous several weeks.
“I haven't watched everything yet,” I said.
“But the system has recordings going back thirty days.””
Ethan stared at the screen.
For the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
“Lauren,” he said quietly, “you need to be careful.””
“Why?””
“Because you don't know what you're looking at.””
“Then you won't mind if I look.””
He rubbed his face with both hands.
“Please. Let's go inside and talk.””
I glanced toward the house.
The same house where I had spent years making his favorite meals, arranging dinner parties, and believing that the photographs on our walls represented a real marriage.
“No,” I said.
“You can explain yourself right here.””
Ethan's expression hardened again.
“You're letting your emotions control you.””
“I'm letting your actions speak for themselves.””
Daniel handed me his phone.
“Lauren, can you send me a copy of the footage?””
“Of course.””
Brooke suddenly rushed toward him.
“Daniel, please don't take this any further. We can work through this.””
He looked at her with an expression I couldn't decipher.
“Can we?””
“Yes. I love you.””
Daniel glanced toward Ethan.
“Do you love him, too?””
Brooke began sobbing.
“That's not fair.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“What's not fair is that I've spent nine years believing I knew my wife.””
She reached for him again.
This time, he didn't move away.
Instead, he looked down at her hand resting against his sleeve.
“Tell me something, Brooke.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“What?””
“Did you marry me because you loved me, or because you thought I could give you the life you wanted?””
Brooke went completely still.
Ethan looked at her.
And that was when I noticed the expression on my husband's face.
It wasn't the expression of a man watching his lover lose her marriage.
It was the expression of a man waiting for her to answer the wrong question.
I felt a chill crawl up my spine.
Daniel noticed it, too.
He withdrew his arm from Brooke's grasp.
“Interesting,” he murmured.
Then he turned toward me.
“Lauren, I need to ask you something, and I need you to answer honestly.””
I nodded.
“Has Ethan ever mentioned a company called Mercer Development Holdings?””
The question struck me harder than anything that had happened beside the pool.
I knew that name.
I had seen it on documents Ethan kept locked in his home office. I had heard him mention it during late-night phone calls. A few months earlier, I had asked why he was suddenly interested in commercial properties across the state.
He had told me it was a private investment opportunity.
I looked at Daniel.
“Yes,” I said slowly.
“Why?””
Daniel's expression darkened.
“Because Mercer Development Holdings is my company.””
Ethan's face drained of color.
Daniel took a step toward him.
“And three months ago, someone started accessing confidential financial files using credentials assigned to my wife.””
Brooke shook her head violently.
“Daniel, no.””
He didn't look at her.
“Tell me I'm wrong.””
Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel reached into his jacket, pulled out a folded document, and held it toward me.
“Lauren, I think you should read this before you decide what to do about your husband.””
