Chapter 7: The Mother Who Never Died

Marcus stood beside his car, holding his phone against his ear.

For several seconds, he couldn't find his voice.

Elena was crying on the other end.

“Marcus, please say something.””

He swallowed.

“Where is she?””

“I don't know exactly where she is now.””

“You just told me she's alive. You said she was the reason Celeste kept you beneath the pool. What does that mean?””

Elena took a shaky breath.

“Your mother is Margaret Vale. She didn't die when you were nine.””

Marcus stared at the mansion.

He remembered the funeral.

He remembered his father's hand resting on his shoulder.

He remembered Julian telling him that their mother had died peacefully after a long illness.

He remembered being given a small silver locket containing her photograph.

Everything had been a lie.

“Why would my father tell me she was dead?””

“Because she left him.””

“Left him?””

“Your father was controlling everything, Marcus. Her money, her movements, even her correspondence. When she discovered what he was doing with the family trust, she tried to leave with you.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What happened?””

“Your father found her before she could take you.””

“And?””

“He gave her a choice. Disappear forever, or watch him destroy the lives of everyone she loved.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Why didn't she come back?””

“Because she believed staying away would keep you safe.””

He let out a bitter laugh.

“And what did she do instead? Help Celeste imprison you?””

Elena didn't answer immediately.

“Your mother was the original trustee of the family holding company. She knew about the hidden accounts, the false documents, and the underground rooms beneath the mansion. Celeste used that knowledge against her.””

“Used it how?””

“She threatened to expose your mother's involvement in the original financial arrangements. She knew your mother had signed documents that could implicate the entire family.””

Marcus looked toward the front entrance.

“Where is the old house?””

“On Briarwood Lane. The one your father bought before we moved into the mansion.””

“I know where it is.””

“Marcus, don't go alone.””

“I'm going.””

“Please listen to me. Your mother isn't the same woman you remember.””

He paused.

“What does that mean?””

“She has been living with something terrible for years.””

Marcus looked at his watch.

“I'm bringing her home, Elena.””

“Marcus…”

“Yes?””

“Don't let her convince you that everything she did was for you.””

The call ended.

He stood motionless for a moment.

Then he got into his car.

The old Vale estate sat behind a long iron fence surrounded by overgrown hedges.

Marcus hadn't visited in nearly fifteen years.

The house had once been beautiful, with white stone pillars, wide balconies, and enormous windows overlooking a private garden. Now the paint was peeling, the fountain was dry, and weeds had pushed through the driveway.

He parked beside the entrance.

A light was burning upstairs.

Someone was home.

Marcus approached the front door and knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

“Hello?””

A curtain moved.

Then the door opened.

An elderly woman stood in the doorway wearing a pale-gray cardigan. Her silver hair was pulled into a loose bun, and she held a wooden cane in one hand.

Marcus barely recognized her.

But he knew those eyes.

He had seen them in childhood photographs.

He had seen them in his own reflection.

The woman looked at him.

“Marcus.””

His knees nearly gave way.

“Mom?””

She began crying.

“Oh, my beautiful boy.””

She reached for his face, but Marcus stepped backward.

“Don't.””

Her hand remained suspended between them.

“Please, sweetheart.””

“Don't call me that.””

Margaret lowered her hand.

For a moment, she looked like a mother who had just lost her child all over again.

Marcus pointed toward the house.

“Let me understand something. I spent twenty years believing you were dead. I stood at your grave.

I cried over an empty coffin. And you've been living here?””

Margaret's eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Your father made me promise.””

“My father is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn't you come back?””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Because I was afraid.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You were afraid? Do you have any idea what I went through?””

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

He stepped into the house.

The smell of old books and lavender filled the hallway.

A photograph of Marcus and Julian as children sat on the console table. Their mother stood between them, smiling.

He picked it up.

“You kept this?””

Margaret nodded.

“I kept everything.””

“Even the truth?””

She closed the door.

“Come into the sitting room.””

“I want answers.””

“And I will give them to you.””

Marcus followed her.

The room was cold, its curtains drawn despite the morning sunlight. A small television sat in the corner. Beside it was a medicine cabinet and a stack of unopened letters.

Margaret lowered herself into an armchair.

Marcus remained standing.

“Start with Elena.””

Her expression changed.

“Your wife should never have been involved.””

“You knew she was beneath my pool?””

Margaret lowered her head.

“Yes.””

Marcus stared at her.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

“You knew?””

“I knew she was being held in the underground chamber.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I tried to get her out.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

Marcus slammed his hand against the table.

“Don't lie to me!””

Margaret flinched.

“I am not lying.””

“Then tell me why my wife spent eleven months chained beneath our home!””

Margaret wiped her cheek.

“Because Elena found the original trust documents.””

“So?””

“She discovered that the company had been built partly with money belonging to a separate family estate. Your father had transferred those assets illegally. When Elena uncovered the records, Celeste became desperate.””

“Why would Celeste care?””

Margaret looked up.

“Because Celeste is my niece.””

Marcus stopped.

“Your niece?””

“My younger sister's daughter.””

He stared at her.

“She's family?””

“Yes.””

“Then you knew her before she became my assistant?””

Margaret nodded.

“I helped raise her.””

Marcus walked toward the window.

Everything was becoming worse.

Celeste hadn't entered his life by accident.

She had been placed there.

By his own family.

“Did you know she was going to propose to me?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I knew she wanted to marry you.””

Marcus spun around.

“She wanted to marry me because of the company?””

“Because she believed marriage would give her control over your decisions. She thought you would sign whatever she placed in front of you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Why didn't you warn me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Eleven months ago. I called the mansion repeatedly. Celeste intercepted every call.””

He stared at her.

“You could have come to the house.””

“I was being watched.””

“By whom?””

Margaret didn't answer.

Marcus pulled out his phone and showed her the photograph of Julian's reflection in the cabinet.

“Was he involved?””

Her lips tightened.

“Your brother was desperate to earn your father's approval. He believed the company should have belonged to him.””

“He helped Celeste imprison Elena.””

“I know.””

“And you let him?””

Margaret's shoulders trembled.

“I thought Celeste was only going to hold Elena until the documents were recovered.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Only?””

Margaret began crying.

“I didn't know she would hurt her.””

“You gave her permission?””

“I gave her the key to the underground chamber.””

The room fell silent.

Marcus looked at the woman who had once tucked him into bed and kissed his forehead.

Then he whispered:

“You helped build my wife's prison.””

Margaret covered her face.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

“From the truth about your father.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What truth?””

Margaret slowly reached beneath a cushion and pulled out a yellowed envelope.

“The blue envelope isn't the only thing your father left behind.””

She placed it on the table.

Inside was an old photograph.

Marcus picked it up.

It showed his father standing outside the old estate with three people.

Margaret.

A younger Julian.

And a little girl with dark hair.

The girl wore the same silver locket that Marcus had seen in photographs of his mother.

He looked closer.

“Who is this?””

Margaret wiped her eyes.

“Celeste.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why was she wearing your locket?””

Margaret's voice dropped.

“Because I gave it to her.””

“Why?””

The elderly woman looked directly at him.

“Because Celeste wasn't simply my niece. I raised her as my own daughter after your aunt died.””

Marcus glanced at the photograph again.

“And?””

Margaret swallowed.

“Your father promised my sister that Celeste would inherit everything one day.””

“Everything?””

“The company. The estate. The family trust.””

Marcus looked at her in disbelief.

“But I inherited the company.””

“Yes. Your father changed his mind.””

“And Celeste?””

“She never accepted it.””

Marcus slowly set the photograph down.

“Where is she now?””

Margaret glanced at the front window.

“I don't know.””

He took a step toward her.

“You're going to tell me everything. Every account, every document, every secret.””

Margaret nodded.

Then she reached for his hand.

“There's one more thing you need to know.””

Marcus looked down.

“What?””

“Your father didn't die naturally.””

His expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Margaret's voice trembled.

“He was murdered.””

Marcus's entire body went cold.

“By whom?””

Margaret looked toward the hallway.

Then she whispered:

“By the same person who has been trying to take your daughter.””

A loud crash sounded upstairs.

Margaret jumped.

Marcus turned toward the staircase.

A door slammed.

He reached for his phone.

“Stay here.””

But before he could move, an unfamiliar voice came from the upstairs landing.

“Mother?””

Marcus looked up.

A woman stepped into view.

She was wearing a black coat.

Her dark hair was tied behind her head.

And in her hand was a small silver key.

Celeste smiled.

“Did you really think you could have this family conversation without me?””
