Chapter 6: The Woman Who Owned Everything
Marcus read the document three times.
Elena Vale.
Beneficial owner.
Rowan Strategic Holdings.
Scheduled transfer: 9:00 a.m.
He looked at the detective.
“Explain this.””
The detective folded his arms.
“We believe the company was established as a holding vehicle several years ago. It acquired shares in Vale Enterprises through a series of private transactions.””
“Who funded it?””
“That's what we're investigating.””
Marcus pointed to the name.
“Why is my wife listed as the beneficiary?””
“We don't know yet.””
“Find out.””
The detective nodded.
“We've sent the documents to our financial crimes unit.””
Marcus looked back at the screen.
The documents included transaction dates, share percentages, legal signatures, and bank references. Most of the accounts were registered overseas.
At the bottom was an electronic authorization.
Elena's signature.
Marcus stared at it.
“She never signed this.””
The detective looked at him.
“How can you be certain?””
“Because I know my wife. And because she was being held prisoner when this transfer was supposedly authorized.””
The detective closed the folder.
“That's useful information. We'll have the signatures examined.””
Ava tugged Marcus's sleeve.
“Daddy, can we go see Mommy now?””
He looked down at her.
“Yes, baby.””
The detective stood.
“One more thing. We need to ask you about your father.””
Marcus's expression changed.
“What about him?””
“The audio recording indicates that he was involved in the plan to obtain your signature.””
“My father died six years ago.””
“We understand.””
“He couldn't have organized anything eleven months ago.””
The detective nodded.
“We're not suggesting that. But the recording suggests a plan was put in place before his death.””
Marcus looked at the computer.
His father had been a powerful businessman. A demanding parent. A man who believed family loyalty was more important than anything else.
He had often told Marcus that the Vale family would survive because its members knew how to protect one another.
Julian had always been his father's favorite.
Marcus had spent years trying to earn the same approval.
After their father died, Marcus inherited the controlling shares.
Julian received a substantial financial settlement but lost his position as chief executive.
At the time, Marcus had believed it was simply an inheritance dispute.
Now he wondered whether the argument had never really been about the company.
“Can I hear the entire recording?”” he asked.
“Not yet. We need to preserve the original file.””
Marcus nodded reluctantly.
“Then make a copy for me as soon as it's cleared.””
By sunrise, Marcus was back at St. Catherine's hospital.
Elena was awake.
She looked stronger than she had the night before, though her wrists were wrapped in soft bandages. Her hair had been washed, and a nurse had helped her into a clean hospital gown.
When Marcus entered carrying Ava, Elena reached out immediately.
“My baby.””
Ava scrambled from his arms and climbed carefully onto the bed.
“Mommy! I brought Bunny!””
Elena smiled.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
Then her eyes moved to Marcus.
He placed the memory card on the bedside table.
“Your message was found.””
Elena's smile disappeared.
“You saw it?””
“I saw everything they recovered.””
She looked down.
“Then you know about your father.””
“I know he was involved in something.””
Elena swallowed.
“Marcus, I tried to tell you.””
“Why didn't you?””
“Because I didn't have proof.””
He pulled a chair toward the bed.
“Start at the beginning.””
Elena glanced at Ava.
“Can she stay?””
Marcus nodded.
Ava settled against her mother.
Elena took a slow breath.
“Your father created a private investment structure before he died. It was meant to control several companies, including Vale Enterprises. But when he changed his will, everything became complicated.””
Marcus listened without interrupting.
“He transferred the controlling shares to you. Julian believed the company should have been his. Your father promised him that there was another way to gain control.””
“What way?””
Elena looked directly at him.
“Marriage.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“Your father believed that if you married someone who could be trusted by the family, he could eventually influence your decisions. But you married me.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What does that have to do with Celeste?””
“Your father had already been working with her family. Celeste's father had a financial interest in the holding company. When your father died, she began working for Julian.””
Marcus remembered the first time Celeste had entered his office.
She had been introduced as an excellent administrative assistant with experience in corporate restructuring.
He had never questioned her background.
Elena continued.
“After we married, Celeste tried several times to get access to our financial records. I thought she was simply overstepping. Then I found the holding company.””
“And you investigated it?””
She nodded.
“I discovered that your father had created a second set of ownership documents. They were supposed to transfer control of the holding company to you on your thirty-fifth birthday.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“My birthday was last year.””
“Exactly.””
“What happened?””
“Celeste said the transfer had been completed. But when I checked the records, the shares had been moved into an account under her control.””
Marcus stood.
“So she stole them.””
“She tried to. But the original beneficiary designation was never changed.””
He looked at her.
“Because it was still in your name?””
Elena nodded.
“I found out that your father had listed me as the final beneficiary if anything happened to you.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Why would he do that?””
“Because he knew Julian might try to take control of the company. He wanted someone outside the dispute to hold the shares.””
“Someone he trusted?””
Elena looked away.
“He trusted me.””
Marcus sat down again.
The revelation unsettled him.
His father had barely spoken to Elena during the last year of his life. He had considered her too independent, too outspoken, too willing to challenge the family.
But apparently, he had trusted her with something enormous.
“Why didn't you tell me before?””
“I tried to explain it the night I disappeared. But Celeste had already found out I was looking into the documents.””
Elena looked at her bruised wrists.
“She wanted the original certificate. I refused to tell her where it was.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Where is it?””
Elena touched the bedside table.
“That's why I hid the memory card in Ava's rabbit.””
Marcus looked at the stuffed toy.
“There are more files?””
Elena nodded.
“The location of the original certificate. The account details. And a recording your father made before he died.””
Marcus felt a knot form in his stomach.
“Where?””
“In the old family house.””
He stared at her.
“The house has been empty for years.””
“I know.””
“Why there?””
“Because your father never trusted the mansion's security system.””
Marcus remembered the strange metal corridors beneath the pool.
His father's obsession with hidden rooms.
The old house had always been filled with locked cabinets, concealed safes, and private storage spaces.
“What am I supposed to find?””
Elena hesitated.
“A blue envelope. Inside it is a letter with your name.””
Marcus took her hand.
“Then I'll get it.””
She squeezed his fingers.
“Be careful. Celeste knows about the envelope.””
“She's missing.””
“That's why I'm scared.””
At 10:15 a.m., Marcus returned to the mansion.
Police officers had secured the grounds. The pool was covered with a temporary protective barrier, and investigators were photographing the underground entrance.
He walked through the front hall toward the staircase.
The house seemed to hold its breath.
His phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.
He answered.
“Marcus Vale.””
“Mr. Vale, this is Detective Harris.””
“Yes?””
“We've located Celeste Rowan's vehicle.””
“Where?””
“Outside the private airfield.””
Marcus stopped walking.
“Is she there?””
“No. The vehicle was abandoned.””
“Then she's preparing to leave the country.””
“Possibly. There's something else. We found a second vehicle registered to your brother. It was parked nearby.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Julian is in custody.””
“Not anymore.””
“What?””
“He was released pending further questioning. His attorney produced documentation suggesting that he had been acting under a corporate authorization.””
Marcus slammed his free hand against the staircase railing.
“Are you serious?””
“I'm afraid so.””
“You watched him leave?””
“We are reviewing the procedure.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Julian had been released.
And Celeste was heading for the airfield.
He turned toward the door.
“Detective, listen to me. They are after a blue envelope in my father's old house. You need officers there immediately.””
“Why?””
“Because whatever is inside it could prove the entire conspiracy.””
“We'll send a unit.””
Marcus ended the call.
He headed toward the garage.
Then he remembered something Elena had said.
Celeste knew about the envelope.
He stopped beside his car.
A black SUV sat across the courtyard.
The driver's window lowered.
A woman was sitting behind the wheel.
Celeste.
Her champagne dress had been replaced with a black coat and dark sunglasses.
She smiled through the glass.
Marcus stepped backward.
“YOU!””
Celeste opened the door.
She looked remarkably calm.
“Hello, Marcus.””
Two security guards rushed toward her.
She lifted both hands.
“I came to talk.””
Marcus approached her slowly.
“You came to my house?””
“Our house, technically.””
“Don't ever say that again.””
Celeste removed her sunglasses.
Her eyes were red, but her voice remained steady.
“I know you've spoken to Elena.””
“Where is Julian?””
“Probably trying to save himself.””
“You're both going to prison.””
Celeste laughed quietly.
“Perhaps. But not before you hear what your wife has been hiding.””
Marcus gestured toward the guards.
“Take her inside.””
She didn't resist.
Instead, she looked at him.
“Did Elena tell you about the envelope?””
“Yes.””
“Did she tell you what's inside?””
“No.””
Celeste tilted her head.
“Then you're still being used.””
Marcus grabbed her arm.
“Enough games.””
“Your father didn't leave that envelope to protect you.””
He loosened his grip slightly.
“What does that mean?””
Celeste leaned closer.
“He left it to protect the company from you.””
Marcus stared at her.
She smiled.
“You see, your father knew what you would become if you ever found out who your real mother was.””
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
“What did you just say?””
Celeste's smile widened.
“Go to the old house, Marcus. Open the blue envelope. Then ask Elena why she never told you the truth.””
The security guards moved to escort her away.
Marcus didn't stop them.
He stood in the courtyard, unable to move.
His mother had died when he was nine.
At least, that was what his father had told him.
He remembered the funeral.
The photographs.
The black suit that had been too large for his small shoulders.
He remembered Julian telling him that their mother had loved him more.
And now Celeste was claiming that the story of his family was a lie.
His phone rang again.
Elena.
He answered immediately.
“Marcus?””
“Did you know?””
Silence.
“Did you know what Celeste just told me?””
Elena began crying.
“Marcus, I wanted to tell you.””
He closed his eyes.
“Is my mother alive?””
A long, painful pause followed.
Then Elena whispered:
“She's been alive all these years.””
Marcus looked toward the mansion.
The world tilted beneath his feet.
May you like
And before he could ask another question, Elena said:
“She's the reason Celeste was able to keep me under that pool.””
