Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Wedding

I drove back home without remembering the journey.

The road passed.

The lights changed.

Cars moved around me.

But my mind was somewhere else.

With my father.

With Emma.

With a truth hidden for years.

When I arrived, my mother was standing outside.

She looked like she had been waiting all night.

I stepped out of the car.

“Tell me everything.””

She nodded.

“I will.””

No excuses.

No hesitation.

That scared me.

We sat in the living room where I had grown up.

The same room where my mother had once told me my father was gone.

Now she was preparing to tell me he had left behind an entire life I never knew existed.

“Your father loved you,” she began.

I looked at her.

“I know.””

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice broke.

“He loved you enough to destroy his own happiness.””

I stayed silent.

She continued.

“Before he met me, he was married to Emma’s mother.””

I swallowed.

“But they divorced.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she was sick.””

I frowned.

“Sick?””

“She had a condition that affected her judgment. She became unpredictable.””

My mother looked down.

“Your father wanted to protect Emma.””

I shook my head.

“So he left?””

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“She left.””

I listened.

“She disappeared with Emma for years. Your father searched for them.””

“And then?””

“Then he found them.””

I thought about the photograph.

My father holding baby Emma.

“He promised to help.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t I know?””

My mother looked at the floor.

“Because your father believed someone was watching your family.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Your uncle.””

My heart dropped.

“My uncle?””

“Your father’s brother.””

I had barely known him.

He disappeared after my father died.

Everyone said he moved away.

My mother continued.

“Your father discovered your uncle had been stealing from the company.””

“So Emma’s father was innocent.””

“Yes.””

“And my father covered it up?””

“He tried to fix it quietly.””

I stood.

“And then he died.””

My mother nodded.

“He was going to expose your uncle.””

The room became silent.

I finally understood.

The story wasn’t about betrayal.

It was about protection.

My father had spent his final days trying to protect everyone.

And nobody protected him.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

A picture.

My uncle.

Standing outside Emma’s apartment.

Taken yesterday.

My blood froze.

Another message appeared.

“You’re looking for the wrong villain.””

I looked at my mother.

“Someone knows.””

She took the phone.

Her face went pale.

“He’s back.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Then someone knocked on the door.

Three slow knocks.

My mother and I froze.

Nobody visited this late.

The knocking came again.

I walked toward the door.

“Daniel.””

My mother’s voice was afraid.

I stopped.

“Don’t.””

But it was too late.

I opened it.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Gray hair.

A face I had only seen in old family photos.

My father’s brother.

Victor Carter.

He smiled sadly.

“Daniel.””

I couldn’t move.

“You’ve grown up.””

My hand tightened around the door.

“What are you doing here?””

He looked past me.

At my mother.

Then back at me.

“I came to tell you the truth.””

I laughed.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

“The same truth everyone has been hiding?””

His expression changed.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“The truth your father died trying to hide.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Victor looked over his shoulder.

Then lowered his voice.

“Your father wasn’t protecting Emma from me.””

A pause.

“He was protecting you from her.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?””

Victor pulled out a folder.

“I know why Emma came into your life.””

My fingers went cold.

“Why?””

He handed me the folder.

Inside was a single photograph.

Emma.

Standing with someone.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had no reason to be there.

My mother gasped.

Because the person standing beside Emma was the last person I expected.

May you like

My father.

Taken two months before his death.
