Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Her Before Me

Jason chose a quiet coffee shop on the edge of town.

Not the kind of place where people went to be seen.

The kind of place where people went to disappear.

I arrived early.

I didn’t know what I expected.

A liar.

A bitter ex.

Someone trying to destroy my relationship.

But when Jason walked in, he didn’t look like any of those things.

He looked exhausted.

He noticed me immediately.

“Daniel?””

I stood.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

The first words out of his mouth surprised me.

“For what?””

“For bringing you into this.””

We sat down.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Jason placed a folder on the table.

“I know what happened at the wedding.””

My jaw tightened.

“How?””

“Emma called me.””

I stared at him.

“Why would she call you?””

He looked away.

“Because she knew I was the one person who could expose everything.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Messages.

I looked at Jason.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

He leaned forward.

“Emma has a pattern.””

I wanted to reject it.

I wanted to stand up and leave.

But I remembered the slap.

The letter.

The sentence.

The perfect man would choose her over everyone else.

Jason continued.

“She doesn’t start relationships because she wants love.””

My fingers tightened around the papers.

“Then why?””

He answered quietly.

“Because she wants security.””

He showed me a picture.

Emma standing beside another man.

A man I didn’t recognize.

“When was this?””

“Two years ago.””

My stomach sank.

“That was when you were engaged.””

Jason nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“You’re saying she cheated?””

“I’m saying she was already looking for the next person before she left me.””

The café suddenly felt too quiet.

I looked through the messages.

Emma telling someone she needed a “better future.””

Emma saying she needed someone “more established.””

Emma complaining that Jason’s family was “holding him back.””

Then I saw my own name.

A message from before we met.

“She’s lucky she found Daniel.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Jason looked at me.

“She was talking about you before you even knew her.””

I couldn’t breathe for a second.

“How?””

“She met you before the charity event.””

“What?””

Jason nodded.

“She saw you at a business conference months earlier.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“She researched you.””

The world I knew began collapsing piece by piece.

I thought back to our first meeting.

The perfect timing.

The perfect conversation.

The feeling that she somehow understood me instantly.

Jason watched my face.

“I’m not telling you this because I hate her.””

“Then why?””

“Because my mother was treated the same way yours was.””

I looked up.

Jason’s voice became softer.

“She convinced me my family was the problem. She convinced me everyone who questioned her was jealous.””

He paused.

“Then one day I realized the only people she called toxic were the people who saw through her.””

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from Emma.

Daniel, please don’t believe him. He’s obsessed with ruining my life.

I showed Jason.

He sighed.

“She always does that.””

“What?””

“Changes the story before anyone else can tell it.””

I looked at the message again.

Then another notification appeared.

This one was from my mother.

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A photo of an old document.

Underneath, my mother had written:

“I should have told you this before the wedding. I’m sorry.””

I zoomed in.

The document had Emma’s name on it.

And a signature.

But it wasn’t from Emma.

It was from someone else.

Someone who had been connected to her before Jason.

Someone whose name made my entire body go cold.

May you like

Because I knew that name.

It was my father’s.
