Chapter 9: The DNA Test That Changed Everything
The warehouse smelled like rust and rain.
I parked outside and immediately regretted bringing Emma.
But I understood why she came.
She wasn’t just looking for answers.
She was taking back control.
The same control Mark had stolen from her.
We walked inside together.
The lights flickered above us.
“Mark?”” I called.
My voice echoed.
No answer.
Then a slow clap came from the shadows.
“Finally.””
My brother stepped forward.
Older.
Tired.
But still the same man I grew up with.
“Ethan.””
I stared at him.
“How could you?””
Mark smiled sadly.
“That’s your first question?””
“What do you think I should ask?””
“Maybe why.””
I laughed.
“Why?””
The anger finally came out.
“Why did you steal my daughter?””
Mark’s expression hardened.
“Because you had everything.””
I stared.
“What?””
“You had the perfect life.””
“That’s what this is about?””
“You don’t understand.””
“No, Mark. I understand perfectly.””
I stepped closer.
“You were jealous.””
His jaw tightened.
“You always got everything.””
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
“You think I had everything?””
“You had Claire.””
I froze.
“What?””
Mark looked away.
“You had the family.””
The words made my stomach twist.
“Mark…”
“You don’t know what it’s like watching someone else get everything you wanted.””
I stared at him.
“You wanted my wife?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
“You’re sick.””
He laughed.
“Maybe.””
Emma stepped forward.
“Why did you lie to me?””
Mark looked at her.
And for a second, he looked ashamed.
Then it disappeared.
“I protected you.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You protected yourself.””
Mark looked at her.
“I raised you.””
“You also stole my life.””
Silence.
Then Mark reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folder.
“You want the truth?””
He threw it onto a table.
“Read it.””
I opened it.
Hospital documents.
DNA reports.
My hands shook.
The first page.
The second.
The third.
Then I stopped.
Because I saw the date.
The DNA test.
Not seventeen years ago.
Two months ago.
I looked at Mark.
“What is this?””
“The truth.””
I flipped through the pages.
A DNA comparison.
Ethan Walker.
Emma Carter.
Probability: 99.9%.
My breath caught.
I looked at Emma.
Then back at Mark.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Two months.””
“Two months?””
Mark nodded.
“I found out when I was trying to prove you weren’t her father.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to destroy the last connection between you.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You tested her.””
“Yes.””
“And when you found out she was mine?””
Mark looked down.
“I panicked.””
“Why?””
“Because I realized everything I did was based on a lie.””
The rain hit the metal roof above us.
For the first time, Mark looked small.
Not powerful.
Not dangerous.
Just broken.
“You knew she was mine,” I whispered.
“Yes.””
“And you still kept her from me.””
He nodded.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You don’t fix a stolen life.””
“I know.””
Emma looked at him.
“Did you ever love me?””
Mark’s face changed.
That question hurt him.
“Yes.””
She swallowed.
“Then why?””
He looked at her.
“Because I was selfish.””
A police siren sounded outside.
Mark looked toward the door.
“What did you do?””
I stared at him.
“I called them.””
His face fell.
“You betrayed me?””
I laughed.
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You betrayed yourself.””
Police officers entered moments later.
But before they took Mark away, he turned back.
“Ethan.””
I didn’t answer.
“He’s alive.””
The words stopped me.
“Who?””
Mark looked at Emma.
“Her biological mother’s husband.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Mark smiled faintly.
“The woman from the other family.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Mark looked at me.
“You think the baby switch was an accident.””
I froze.
“What?””
He whispered:
“It wasn’t.””
The officers pulled him away.
I stood there.
Unable to move.
Because suddenly I understood.
Mark had lied.
Claire had lied.
Everyone had lied.
But someone else had been controlling this from the beginning.
And somewhere out there was a person who knew exactly how two babies disappeared.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*If you want the real truth about Lily and Emma, ask the woman who signed the hospital transfer papers.*
Below it was a name.
A name I recognized.
May you like
A name that made my blood run cold.
*Claire’s mother.*
