Chapter 5: The Daughter I Raised and the Daughter I Lost
I drove home without remembering the drive.
The entire world looked normal.
That was the cruelest part.
People walked their dogs.
Cars stopped at red lights.
A man pushed a stroller across the street.
Everything continued as if my life hadn’t just been ripped open.
I kept thinking about Lily.
Not the DNA.
Not the hospital.
Not the records.
Just Lily.
The little girl who used to fall asleep on my chest during movie nights.
The teenager who still hugged me when she thought nobody was watching.
The daughter who carried a secret to protect a woman who had hurt her.
She was my daughter.
But now someone was asking me to question something I had never questioned.
When I arrived home, Claire was waiting.
She knew.
I didn’t ask how.
She just knew.
“You went to the hospital.””
I placed the envelope on the table.
Dr. Reed’s name was written across it.
Claire closed her eyes.
“Ethan…”
“Why?””
One word.
That was all I had.
Why?
Why did she let me live seventeen years believing something different?
Why did she hide the truth?
Why did she make our daughter carry this burden?
Claire sat down.
“I was twenty-four.””
I said nothing.
“I had just found out I was pregnant. My whole life was changing. Then I met you.””
Her voice shook.
“You saved me.””
I almost laughed.
Saved her?
I felt like I was drowning.
“I loved you,” she continued.
“I know.””
“No, Ethan. You don’t.””
She wiped her tears.
“You don’t know because I never told you the whole story.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me now.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“The night Lily was born, there was a storm.””
I remembered.
I remembered driving through heavy rain.
I remembered Claire’s mother calling every ten minutes.
“Your mother-in-law was there,” Claire said.
“She was supposed to be in the waiting room.””
I frowned.
“Supposed to be?””
Claire looked down.
“She wasn’t happy about the pregnancy.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She wanted me to give Lily up.””
The words shocked me.
“Why?””
“Because she believed I was ruining my future.””
I stared.
“But why would that lead to a baby switch?””
Claire’s face twisted.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen.””
She covered her face.
“The nurses made a mistake.””
“And you fixed it.””
She looked at me.
“I panicked.””
“You changed records.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“Why?””
“Because the baby I was given…”
She started crying.
“She wasn’t the baby I gave birth to.””
I felt my anger weaken.
Not disappear.
But weaken.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I looked at you holding her.””
Claire’s voice broke.
“You were crying.””
I looked away.
“You said you had never loved anyone the way you loved her.””
My throat tightened.
“And?””
“And I couldn’t take her away from you.””
Silence.
Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.
“Where is my biological daughter?””
Claire didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Claire.””
She whispered:
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
“I tried to find her.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“And?””
“I found the other family.””
My heart stopped.
“You did?””
She nodded.
“And?””
Claire looked toward the stairs.
“Something happened.””
“What?””
She whispered:
“They didn’t know either.””
The room went silent.
“What does that mean?””
“It means their daughter was also raised believing she belonged to them.””
I stood there, frozen.
Two families.
Two daughters.
Two lives changed.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Ethan Walker?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Vanessa Cole.””
I gripped the phone.
The hospital worker.
The woman from the messages.
“You know who I am,” she said.
“Where is my daughter?””
A pause.
Then:
“That depends on which daughter you mean.””
My blood went cold.
“What does that mean?””
“I have been trying to tell Claire for years.””
“Tell me now.””
Her voice lowered.
“Your wife didn’t just hide a baby switch.””
I looked at Claire.
“She hid what happened after.””
My grip tightened.
“What happened after?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Your biological daughter was found.””
I stopped breathing.
“Where?””
Another pause.
May you like
Then she said:
“She was raised by someone you trust.””
