Chapter 9: The Last Lie

I spent the entire night staring at the photograph.

My father.

Claire.

The hospital.

Three years before we met.

There was no explanation that made sense.

Unless everything I believed about my marriage was wrong from the beginning.

Again.

At sunrise, Emily found me sitting at the kitchen table.

“You didn’t sleep.””

I looked at her.

Neither did she.

She sat down.

“What happened?””

I handed her the photograph.

She studied it.

Then frowned.

“Mom?””

I nodded.

“How is that possible?””

“I don’t know.””

Emily looked closer.

“She looks younger.””

“She was.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Not just younger.””

She pointed.

“She looks scared.””

I stared at the image.

And she was right.

Claire wasn’t smiling.

She wasn’t standing comfortably beside my father.

She looked like someone who was afraid.

Someone who had been caught.

My phone rang.

This time, I recognized the number.

Claire.

I answered.

“Why were you with my father before I met you?””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

Her voice broke.

“Mark…”

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me everything.””

A long pause.

Then Claire whispered:

“I met your father before I met you.””

“Why?””

“Because of Emily.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“He found me.””

“Your father found you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire started crying.

“Because he knew the truth.””

The words echoed.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I told him.””

I stood up.

“You told my father before you told me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire’s voice was barely audible.

“Because I was planning to leave.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Before I met you, I was going to give Emily up.””

The anger disappeared.

Replaced by confusion.

“What changed?””

“Your father.””

I gripped the table.

“What did he say?””

Claire cried.

“He told me about you.””

I didn’t understand.

“He said you had always wanted a family. He said you would love that baby even if she wasn’t yours.””

I closed my eyes.

My father.

Even then.

He was making decisions.

Trying to save everyone.

But maybe he had created a bigger disaster.

“What was in the folder?””

Claire went silent.

“Claire.””

“The DNA results.””

My heart stopped.

“What DNA results?””

“The ones that proved Emily was yours.””

I sat down slowly.

“Then why did you tell me she wasn’t?””

“Because Daniel changed everything.””

“How?””

Claire’s voice shook.

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

“With the truth.””

I laughed.

“The truth?””

“No.””

She whispered:

“With a lie.””

I waited.

“He told me the hospital records proved Emily wasn’t yours.””

My stomach tightened.

“But they were wrong.””

“Yes.””

“Did you know?””

“No.””

That answer surprised me.

“You didn’t?””

Claire cried.

“I spent twenty years believing the wrong thing.””

The room became quiet.

For the first time, I heard something in her voice besides guilt.

Regret.

Real regret.

“Then why leave?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire?””

“Because Daniel found the original documents.””

“And?””

“He told me if I didn’t pay him, he would tell you everything.””

I looked at the photograph.

“And the $20,000?””

“Yes.””

“You were paying him to keep lying.””

“I was paying him because I was terrified.””

I rubbed my face.

My whole life had been controlled by fear.

Everyone had been afraid.

And everyone had chosen silence.

“Where is Daniel now?””

Claire hesitated.

That hesitation told me enough.

“Claire.””

“He’s coming to you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“He knows you found out.””

A message arrived.

From Daniel.

I opened it.

*You want the final answer? Come alone.*

Below it was an address.

And one more sentence.

*Bring the letter your father left you.*

I showed Claire.

Her breathing changed.

“What?””

“You know that place?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because that’s where your father kept the truth.””

I stood.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Dad, don’t go alone.””

I looked at her.

“I need answers.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“You need to come back.””

That sentence stopped me.

Because twenty-two years ago, I walked into a hospital and became a father.

Tonight, I was walking into another unknown place.

But this time, I wasn’t walking in blind.

I kissed Emily’s forehead.

“I’ll come back.””

I drove to the address.

An abandoned warehouse on the edge of town.

The door was already open.

Inside, one light hung from the ceiling.

Daniel stood beneath it.

Older than his photographs.

But still carrying the same confidence.

The confidence of someone who believed he controlled everyone’s lives.

“You came.””

I stared at him.

“You ruined my family.””

He smiled.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I revealed your family.””

I stepped closer.

“Why?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a folder.

“Because your father made the same mistake everyone else did.””

I looked at the folder.

“What mistake?””

Daniel smiled.

“He thought you deserved a happy life.””

He handed me the folder.

I opened it.

Inside was one final document.

A birth certificate.

Not Emily’s.

Not mine.

A child I had never heard of.

And at the bottom was a name that made my blood run cold.

*Mother: Claire Bennett.*

*Father: Mark Bennett.*

*Child: Olivia Bennett.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

May you like

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“The daughter you never knew existed.””
