Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Lie

I drove home without remembering the drive.

My hands held the steering wheel.

My eyes watched the road.

But my mind was somewhere else.

Someone I trusted.

That was the sentence that followed me.

Not Daniel.

Not a stranger.

Someone close enough to hurt me.

Someone close enough to know exactly how to hide the truth.

When I arrived home, Claire was standing outside.

Rain fell around her.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Older.

Not because of age.

Because secrets had weight.

“You shouldn’t have come here,” I said.

“I know.””

“Then why are you here?””

She looked toward the house.

“Because I owe you the truth.””

I laughed quietly.

“Now?””

Her eyes filled.

“I know I’m late.””

“Twenty-two years late.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I unlocked the door but didn’t invite her inside.

The woman standing in front of me was my wife.

And a stranger.

Both at the same time.

“Tell me.””

Claire looked down.

“I need you to understand something.””

“No.””

She looked up.

“No?””

“I don’t need an explanation first. I need the truth.””

Her lips pressed together.

Then she whispered:

“Emily’s biological father is not Daniel.””

The words still shocked me.

Even after hearing them.

“Then who?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Your brother.””

I felt like someone had punched the air from my lungs.

“My brother?””

She nodded.

“My older brother?””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

My brother.

The man who had stood beside me at my wedding.

The man who held Emily as a baby.

The man who told everyone how proud he was of his little brother.

My own family.

“No.””

“Mark—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You’re lying again.””

“I wish I was.””

I walked into the house.

Claire followed.

“Why?””

The word came out broken.

“Why would you do this?””

Claire started crying.

“Because I was young and stupid.””

“That doesn’t explain it.””

“No.””

She wiped her face.

“It doesn’t.””

The silence between us was unbearable.

Then she said:

“Your brother and I made a mistake before I met you.””

I stared at her.

“And you married me knowing?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was pregnant.””

I felt sick.

The room spun.

“You knew the baby might be his?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me raise her?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“You loved her.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It is.””

I looked at her.

“No, Claire. It’s not.””

She stepped closer.

“Mark, when Emily was born, you were the only father she knew. You were the person who held her when she cried. You were the person she looked for when she was scared.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to use my love as an excuse for your lies.””

Her face collapsed.

“I know.””

For once, she didn’t defend herself.

That almost hurt more.

“Did my brother know?””

Claire didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“He knew.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I walked to the window.

Outside, the neighborhood looked exactly the same.

Same houses.

Same trees.

Same street.

But my life was completely different.

“What about the $20,000?””

Claire sat down.

“Your brother needed it.””

“Why?””

“Because he was going to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

She looked terrified.

“The whole truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“The truth you spent twenty years hiding?””

“Yes.””

“Then why pay him?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I turned around.

“Afraid of what?””

Claire looked at me.

“Afraid that when you learned everything, you wouldn’t just leave me.””

A pause.

“You would leave Emily.””

The anger inside me faded slightly.

Not disappeared.

But changed.

Because that was the one thing Claire never understood.

Emily was never the problem.

Never.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You finally know. Meet me if you want the rest.*

Below it was a photo.

A picture of my brother standing outside a hospital.

Holding a newborn baby.

I looked closer.

The date.

The date was twenty-two years ago.

But the baby wasn’t Emily.

There was another child.

Another secret.

I looked at Claire.

“What is this?””

Her face turned white.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I swear.””

The message came again.

*Ask Claire who the baby belonged to.*

My heart started racing.

Because suddenly I understood.

The lie wasn’t only about Emily.

It was bigger.

Much bigger.

I grabbed my coat.

Claire stood.

“Where are you going?””

“To meet whoever sent this.””

“Mark, wait.””

I looked at her.

“For twenty-two years, everyone told me to wait.””

May you like

My voice lowered.

“I’m done waiting.””
