Chapter 7: The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead

“Richard, darling. It's been a long time.””
Nobody moved.
My father stood frozen beside the archive table, staring at Jonathan's phone as though it had become a weapon pointed directly at his heart.
I had heard fear in his voice before.
But never like this.
“Dad?”” I whispered.
He didn't answer.
Jonathan slowly lowered the phone.
“She's in the lobby.””
My father swallowed.
“Tell security not to let her upstairs.””
The woman's voice came through the speaker again.
“Don't bother, Richard. I've already told them who I am.””
A faint laugh followed.
“And apparently, your security team remembers me.””
My father's face went white.
Damon stepped away from the cabinet.
“It's really her?””
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“I knew Evelyn had something to do with it. I didn't know she was alive.””
My father grabbed his coat.
“Naomi, stay here.””
“No.””
“This isn't a discussion.””
“Then stop treating me like a child.””
He looked at me.
For a moment, I saw the father who had held my hand at my mother's funeral, the man who had spent years protecting me from truths he believed I couldn't survive.
Then I saw the man who had kept an entire part of my mother's life hidden.
“You have to trust me,” he said.
“I trusted you when you told me Mom died in an accident.””
His eyes filled with pain.
I continued.
“And now you're telling me that wasn't true. So please don't ask me to blindly trust you again.””
Richard looked away.
Jonathan finally spoke.
“Richard, we need to control this situation. Whoever is downstairs may have legal rights connected to the estate.””
My father nodded.
“Then let's find out.””
We entered the elevator together.
Damon followed.
Savannah stayed behind with the security officers.
When the doors opened into the hotel lobby, the first thing I noticed was the silence.
The receptionists stood behind the marble counter.
Two security guards were positioned near the entrance.
And beside the grand piano stood a woman wearing a cream-colored coat.
Her dark hair was streaked with silver.
She held a black umbrella in one hand and a small leather handbag in the other.
She looked older.
But there was no mistaking her face.
I had seen it in hundreds of childhood photographs.
The woman who had once brought me birthday cakes.
The woman who had kissed my forehead when I was little.
The woman my father had told me was dead.
“Evelyn?”” I whispered.
She turned.
Her eyes immediately found mine.
“Naomi.””
I couldn't move.
She smiled sadly.
“Look at you. You've grown into your mother.””
My father stepped between us.
“Don't you dare speak to her.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Still playing the protective father?””
“You have no right to be here.””
“Actually, Richard, I believe I have every right.””
She reached into her handbag.
Then she removed a folded document.
Jonathan approached cautiously.
“What is that?””
“My original partnership agreement with Eleanor Whitmore.””
My father's jaw tightened.
“Eleanor is dead.””
“And yet her signature remains very much alive.””
Evelyn handed the document to Jonathan.
He examined the first page.
His expression changed.
“Where did you obtain this?””
“I kept it safe.””
“You've been missing for fifteen years.””
Evelyn smiled.
“Missing is such an ugly word. I prefer unavailable.””
My father stepped closer.
“You let us believe you were dead.””
“You let me believe Eleanor's death was an accident.””
The words struck the lobby like a gunshot.
I looked at my father.
“What is she talking about?””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Evelyn is a liar.””
She laughed.
“Of course. That's what you told everyone fifteen years ago, wasn't it?””
Then she looked at me.
“Naomi, do you know why your mother was so afraid during the final months of her life?””
I shook my head.
“Because she discovered that the family trust had been manipulated. Money was disappearing. Documents were being altered. And the person responsible had convinced everyone that he was the victim.””
I turned toward my father.
He remained silent.
Evelyn continued.
“Your mother came to me because she needed someone she could trust.””
“And you betrayed her?”” I asked.
Evelyn's expression changed.
“No. I tried to save her.””
My father suddenly shouted.
“ENOUGH!””
Everyone in the lobby turned.
Richard lowered his voice.
“You don't get to rewrite history.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Then tell your daughter what happened.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Dad, what happened?””
He looked at me.
His eyes were wet.
“Your mother discovered that someone had been using her signature to authorize unauthorized transfers. She believed it was Victor.””
“Was it?””
“I thought so.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You knew better.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“Not then.””
She approached the reception desk and placed another document on the marble surface.
“This is the original report from the night Eleanor died.””
Jonathan picked it up.
“Where did you get this?””
“From the private investigator Richard hired and then dismissed.””
My father closed his eyes.
I turned toward him.
“Dad?””
He finally spoke.
“Your mother called me that night. She said she had proof that someone had been stealing from the estate.””
“Who?””
“I didn't know.””
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“You knew. You just couldn't accept it.””
Richard looked at her.
“Stop.””
She turned toward me.
“Your mother had arranged to meet me that evening. She wanted to give me the original beneficiary schedule. But she never arrived.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“What happened?””
Evelyn's face softened.
“I found her car near the old bridge. The road was wet. The guardrail had been damaged. Her vehicle was already underwater.””
I gripped the reception counter.
“No.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I tried to get to her. I couldn't.””
My father stepped forward.
“That's not what happened.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You know it is.””
He stared at the floor.
I could barely breathe.
“Was Mom alive when you found her?””
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“For a few minutes.””
I covered my mouth.
“She spoke?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She told me to protect you.””
The words echoed through my head.
My mother had been alive.
She had known she was dying.
And she had used her final moments to ask someone to protect me.
I looked at my father.
“Why did you never tell me?””
He reached for me.
I stepped back.
“Naomi, I was trying to protect you.””
“From what? The truth?””
He swallowed.
“I was told the investigation would expose you to danger. There were threats. People were watching the estate.””
“So you buried everything?””
“I thought I was keeping you alive.””
Evelyn interrupted.
“And while you were protecting her, someone was preparing to take her inheritance.””
Jonathan examined the report again.
“Ms. Cross, this document appears to reference a second beneficiary.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
Then she reached into her handbag and removed a sealed envelope.
“Your mother wanted Naomi to have this.””
I took it.
My name was written on the front.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My mother's.
I opened the envelope with shaking hands.
Inside was a letter.
My beautiful Naomi,
If you're reading this, then the people I trusted failed to protect the truth.
You must know that the inheritance was never meant to be yours alone.
There is someone else. Someone I loved before you were born.
I stopped reading.
My fingers went numb.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Who?””
She looked directly at me.
“Your mother had another child.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“A daughter,” Evelyn whispered.
“She was born before your mother married Richard.””
My father closed his eyes.
I turned toward him.
“Dad?””
He nodded slowly.
“It's true.””
My entire world seemed to tilt.
I looked down at the letter again.
Her name is Clara.
I had a sister.
A sister who had been hidden from me my entire life.
“Where is she?”” I whispered.
Evelyn's expression became grave.
“That's why I came back.””
She turned toward my father.
“Because Clara has disappeared.””
Before anyone could respond, the hotel lobby doors opened.
A young woman entered.
Her coat was soaked.
Her breathing was uneven.
She looked directly at me.
Then she lifted her chin and spoke.
“I'm looking for Naomi Whitmore.””
I stepped forward.
“I'm Naomi.””
The woman reached into her bag and pulled out a photograph.
It showed my mother holding a newborn baby.
On the back, in my mother's handwriting, were two words.
*My Clara.*
The woman looked at me.
“My name is Clara Hale.””
Then she said something that made Evelyn drop her handbag.
“I'm not here for the inheritance.””
May you like
She swallowed.
“I'm here because someone is trying to kill me.””
