Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Fortune

Damon stared at my father as if someone had just spoken a foreign language.

“Excuse me?””

Richard adjusted the cuff of his coat.

“You heard me.””

Damon looked between us.

Then he laughed.

It was the same dismissive laugh he used whenever someone challenged him in a boardroom.

“Naomi, who is this?””

I stepped closer to my father.

“My father.””

“I know that. I mean, who is he?””

Richard's attorney approached.

“Mr. Whitmore, my name is Jonathan Pierce. I represent the Whitmore Family Trust.””

Damon's smile faded.

“The what?””

Jonathan opened his briefcase.

“The Whitmore Family Trust. Established by Richard Whitmore, majority beneficiary and controlling investor in Whitmore Holdings.””

Damon blinked.

“That company is mine.””

“No,” Jonathan replied calmly.

“You've been managing it.””

Savannah moved away from the doorway.

Damon glanced at her.

“What's going on?””

My father didn't bother answering him.

Instead, he placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Naomi, let's get you inside somewhere warm.””

Damon stepped forward.

“Hold on. You can't just walk into my house.””

Richard turned.

“Your house?””

“Yes. I own this property.””

Jonathan removed a document from his folder.

“Actually, the property is held by Whitmore Estate Holdings LLC. The controlling interest belongs to the family trust. You have occupied it under a revocable residential agreement.””

Damon stared at the paper.

“That can't be right.””

“It is,” Jonathan said.

Savannah looked at Damon.

“You told me you owned everything.””

“Not now, Savannah.””

“But you said—”

“I said not now!””

My father raised one hand.

The entire entrance fell silent.

“Damon, three years ago, my daughter asked me to give you an opportunity. She believed you were a decent man who wanted to build something meaningful.””

Damon forced a smile.

“Mr. Whitmore, I think there's been a misunderstanding. Naomi and I are going through a private marital disagreement.””

“Private?””

Richard glanced at my muddy handbag.

“Is throwing my daughter into a storm part of your private disagreement?””

Damon's jaw tightened.

“She was being unreasonable.””

“Because you gave her dead mother's bracelet to another woman?””

Savannah instinctively covered her wrist.

Richard noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

“Take that bracelet off.””

Savannah lifted her chin.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

“Damon gave it to me.””

Richard looked at Damon.

“Did you?””

Damon crossed his arms.

“It's jewelry. I can give whatever I want to whoever I choose.””

My father stepped closer.

“That bracelet was made from jade that belonged to my wife's family. It was never yours to give away.””

Savannah looked uncomfortable.

“But—”

“Remove it.””

Damon grabbed her arm.

“Savannah, just take it off.””

She yanked her wrist away.

“Don't grab me!””

I watched them argue.

Only a few minutes earlier, she had stood beside him, laughing while I begged for my mother's bracelet.

Now the same bracelet had become a problem.

Savannah finally unclasped it.

She held it out reluctantly.

My father didn't take it.

He looked at me.

“Sweetheart, it's yours.””

I accepted the bracelet with trembling fingers.

The jade was cold.

I remembered my mother fastening it around my wrist when I was sixteen.

“Never let anyone convince you that something precious becomes worthless just because they don't understand its value,” she had told me.

I pressed it against my palm.

“Thank you, Dad.””

Richard nodded.

Then he turned toward Damon.

“Now, let's discuss the company.””

Damon's expression hardened.

“I have a board meeting tomorrow. Whatever you think you're doing, you need to speak to my lawyers first.””

Jonathan smiled faintly.

“That's precisely why we're here.””

He placed a second document on the entrance table.

“Effective immediately, the family trust is exercising its contractual rights to suspend your authority over designated trust-controlled assets pending an independent audit.””

Damon scanned the first page.

His face lost color.

“You can't do this.””

“We can,” Jonathan said.

“And we have.””

“What about my shares?””

“Your personal shares remain subject to the shareholder agreement. However, the voting rights attached to the controlling block are held by the trust.””

Damon looked at me.

“You knew about this?””

I didn't answer.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

He stepped toward me.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

I stared at him.

“Because I wanted you to love me without knowing what my family owned.””

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

My father continued.

“There's another matter. My daughter has informed me that you canceled her access to the household accounts.””

Damon recovered some of his confidence.

“Those accounts are under my control.””

Jonathan opened another folder.

“Several of them are funded by trust distributions designated for Naomi's personal use. Their access cannot be revoked by you.””

Damon rubbed his forehead.

“I'm sure this can be sorted out tomorrow.””

“No,” Richard replied.

“It will be sorted out tonight.””

He nodded to the security director.

Two men entered the mansion carrying sealed boxes.

“What are they doing?”” Damon demanded.

“Collecting company-owned devices and documents that may be relevant to the audit,” Jonathan answered.

“You're searching my house?””

“Only records and assets covered by the relevant agreements. We have the required legal authorization.””

Savannah looked increasingly nervous.

“Damon, maybe we should leave.””

He snapped his head toward her.

“Leave? This is my home.””

Richard glanced at the jade bracelet in my hand.

“Not for much longer, perhaps.””

Damon turned to me.

“Naomi, tell your father to stop this.””

I looked at the man who had thrown my belongings into the rain.

“Why?””

“Because we're married!””

“You remembered that?””

His face reddened.

“You're going to destroy everything over one argument?””

“One argument?””

I stepped forward.

“You humiliated me in front of your mistress. You gave away my mother's bracelet. You canceled my cards and threw my handbag into a puddle. And you told me I was nothing.””

Damon lowered his voice.

“I was angry.””

“So was I.””

“Naomi, listen—”

“No. You listen.””

My voice was steady now.

“You spent three years believing you were the most powerful person in this marriage. You never once asked who was protecting you from the consequences of your own decisions.””

Savannah suddenly spoke.

“This is ridiculous. Damon, tell them the truth.””

Damon turned.

“What truth?””

She looked at him with panic in her eyes.

“The money. The transfers. You said Richard would never find out.””

My father became still.

Jonathan stopped writing.

I turned slowly toward Savannah.

“What transfers?””

Savannah immediately looked away.

Damon's expression changed.

“Savannah, shut your mouth.””

She took a step backward.

“You told me everything was arranged!””

Richard's voice was quiet.

“What did you arrange, Damon?””

Damon grabbed Savannah's elbow.

“We're leaving.””

But before he could pull her away, Jonathan placed a final document on the table.

“Mr. Whitmore, there's one more reason we came tonight.””

Damon stared at him.

Jonathan opened the folder.

“An unusual series of transfers was discovered during a preliminary review of the company's accounts.””

My father looked at Damon.

“Money was moved without authorization.””

Damon's face became rigid.

Jonathan continued.

“Some of those transfers went to an offshore consulting firm. The beneficial ownership records lead to a company registered under the name Savannah Reed.””

Savannah went pale.

“That isn't true.””

Jonathan looked directly at her.

“Then you'll have no problem explaining why the company received nearly four million dollars.””

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

Four million dollars.

My husband had not only betrayed me.

He might have been stealing from the company my father had built.

Richard looked at me.

“Naomi, did you know about any of this?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He turned back toward Damon.

“Then I suggest you start telling the truth.””

Damon's hands curled into fists.

“You don't understand what you're doing.””

Richard's expression didn't change.

“Then explain it.””

Damon stared at the documents.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked like a man with nowhere left to hide.

May you like

Then Savannah whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Damon… what about the other account?””
