Chapter 8: The Woman Who Was Sent to Break Us
I stared at Vanessa.
The words didn’t make sense.
“You were sent to me?””
She nodded.
“I didn’t understand at first.””
I stepped back.
“By who?””
Her eyes filled with shame.
“Victor Hale.””
The name felt poisonous.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted information.””
“What information?””
“About your company.””
I laughed once.
A bitter, empty sound.
“So this was all an act?””
Vanessa looked down.
“At the beginning.””
That answer hurt more than if she had lied.
“At the beginning?””
She nodded.
“I was supposed to get close to you.””
“And then?””
“I was supposed to convince you to sell.””
I stared.
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
She looked toward Lily’s room.
“Because I actually cared about her.””
I almost interrupted.
But something stopped me.
Not forgiveness.
Not trust.
Just curiosity.
“Then why did you hurt her?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Because Victor found out I was changing.””
The room became silent.
“He threatened me.””
“With what?””
She pulled up her sleeve.
There was a bruise on her arm.
“He said if I didn’t make Lily hate me, he would destroy everything.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because Sarah’s notebook.””
I froze.
“What about it?””
“Victor knew Sarah had evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Daniel wasn’t working alone.””
My chest tightened.
“Who else?””
She looked at me.
“Someone inside your family.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Michael.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“Your father-in-law.””
I froze.
“My wife’s father?””
She nodded.
“He invested with Victor.””
I couldn’t speak.
Sarah’s father.
The man who cried at her funeral.
The man who hugged me and told me I had to be strong for Lily.
Another person.
Another lie.
“How do you know?””
“Because Victor told me.””
I stared at her.
“And you kept this from me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was ashamed.””
I looked at Lily’s door.
“She trusted you.””
“I know.””
“She called you Mom once.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I know.””
That was the first time I saw genuine pain on her face.
Not the pain of losing a wedding.
The pain of realizing what she had destroyed.
But I wasn’t ready to forgive.
Not yet.
My phone rang.
Marcus.
I answered.
“Michael.””
His voice was urgent.
“We found something.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
“From where?””
“Sarah’s car.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“The vehicle’s black box was damaged, but we recovered part of the audio.””
I gripped the phone.
“Play it.””
A few seconds of static.
Then Sarah’s voice.
My knees almost gave out.
“Michael…”
I closed my eyes.
My wife.
After three years.
I heard her voice again.
Then another voice.
A man.
I didn’t recognize it.
“Give me the file, Sarah.””
Sarah sounded afraid.
“No.””
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
A crash of sound.
Then Sarah whispered:
“If anything happens to me, Michael will know the truth.””
The recording ended.
I couldn’t breathe.
Marcus spoke again.
“Michael?””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying silently.
“Who was the man?””
Marcus hesitated.
“We’re trying to identify him.””
Then he added:
“But there’s one more thing.””
“What?””
A pause.
“The recording was recovered from a device that was hidden in your house.””
My blood ran cold.
“What device?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“A camera.””
I looked around my home.
My safe place.
My daughter’s home.
And then he said:
May you like
“Michael…”
“The camera was installed the week before your wedding.””
