Chapter 2: The Secret Vanessa Buried
The man standing in the church doorway looked like he had walked straight out of a nightmare.
Older.
Tired.
Angry.
Vanessa turned around.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
“Ethan?””
The name slipped out before she could stop herself.
Everyone heard it.
I watched her carefully.
Because the strangest part wasn’t that she knew him.
The strangest part was that she looked afraid.
The man stepped inside.
“Hello, Vanessa.””
Her hands started shaking.
“Why are you here?””
Ethan looked around the church.
“At first, I came because I thought Michael deserved to know the truth.””
Vanessa swallowed.
Then she looked at me.
“Michael, don’t listen to him.””
I almost laughed.
An hour ago, I would have defended her.
An hour ago, I would have told anyone questioning Vanessa that they didn’t know her.
But then I remembered Lily hiding behind me.
“Who is he?”” I asked.
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“Tell him.””
She said nothing.
“Tell him what you did.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Michael, this man is unstable.””
Ethan gave a bitter smile.
“That’s exactly what you told everyone about me.””
My jaw tightened.
“Someone better start explaining.””
Daniel walked closer.
“Michael, maybe we should do this somewhere private.””
“No.””
I looked around the church.
“These people came here today because they believed they knew what kind of person Vanessa was.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“I think they deserve to know.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re humiliating me.””
The same words again.
Not “I’m sorry.””
Not “Is Lily okay?””
Humiliation.
That was what mattered.
Ethan took a deep breath.
“Vanessa and I were engaged six years ago.””
The church erupted with whispers.
I stared at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“It ended.””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes. After you destroyed my family.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You cheated on me.””
“No, Vanessa.””
Ethan’s voice was calm.
“That was the story you told everyone.””
My heart was pounding.
“Michael,” Vanessa said quickly, “he’s lying.””
Ethan reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small folder.
“I knew you’d say that.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
He handed it to me.
I opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Messages.
Documents.
My hands went cold.
The first photograph showed Vanessa standing outside a lawyer’s office.
The second showed a child.
A little girl.
About Lily’s age.
I looked up.
“Who is this?””
Ethan’s eyes lowered.
“My daughter.””
Silence.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You have a daughter?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her lips parted.
“I…”
Ethan interrupted.
“She doesn’t tell people about Emily.””
My fingers tightened around the papers.
“Why?””
“Because Emily was the reason Vanessa and I broke up.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. Stop.””
Ethan ignored her.
“She didn’t leave because I cheated. She left because after my wife died, I had custody of my daughter. Vanessa said she didn’t want to raise someone else’s child.””
I looked at Vanessa.
The woman who had promised to love Lily.
The woman who had just slapped her.
“I was wrong,” Vanessa whispered.
I stared at her.
“About what?””
She looked away.
“I thought I could handle it.””
Ethan laughed quietly.
“That’s what you said about Emily too.””
Vanessa’s voice became angry.
“Don’t bring her into this.””
“Why?”” Ethan asked.
“Because Michael’s daughter looks exactly like the child you abandoned?””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Vanessa looked at Lily.
And for one second, I saw something in her eyes.
Not love.
Not regret.
Recognition.
Like she was looking at a reminder of a secret she had spent years hiding.
I moved closer to Lily.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
She stepped beside me.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Michael, please.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Please don’t let this stranger destroy everything.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then at the papers.
Then at my daughter.
“You already destroyed everything.””
Vanessa started crying.
Finally.
But I couldn’t tell if those tears were for Lily.
Or for herself.
The pastor quietly left the altar.
Guests began walking out.
The wedding that was supposed to be the happiest day of my life had become the day I discovered I barely knew the person standing beside me.
But as I was about to leave, Ethan grabbed my arm.
“Michael.””
I turned.
“There’s one more thing.””
His voice dropped.
“Something Vanessa did before today.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Ethan looked toward Lily.
Then back at me.
“She didn’t just hide her past from you.””
May you like
He handed me one final piece of paper.
“She has been trying to get rid of your daughter for months.””
