Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Door

The voice outside the safe house belonged to someone who should never have been there.

Not because they were unwelcome.

Because they were impossible.

Gabriele kept his weapon raised.

Federica stood frozen beside the table, the paper with Matteo Romano’s account details still clenched in her hand.

The footsteps stopped outside the steel door.

Then came three slow knocks.

Not aggressive.

Not desperate.

Almost polite.

That somehow made it worse.

“Gabriele,” the voice called.

“If I wanted you dead, you wouldn’t hear me knocking.””

Gabriele’s expression hardened.

“Everyone says that before they try.””

Federica looked at him.

“You know who it is.””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

The locks on the steel door clicked.

Not from the outside.

From inside.

Federica’s eyes widened.

“Someone has access?””

Gabriele didn’t move.

“Only family.””

The door opened.

And Federica felt like the room had tilted.

A woman stood there.

Late fifties.

Dark hair streaked with silver.

Elegant black coat.

No weapon visible.

No fear.

Because she had walked into the home of Chicago’s most dangerous man and acted like she owned the place.

Gabriele lowered his weapon slightly.

But not because he trusted her.

Because he was shocked.

“Isabella.””

The woman looked at him.

“Hello, Gabriele.””

Federica looked between them.

“Who is she?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That bothered her.

Because silence from criminals was normal.

Silence from people who loved each other was different.

It meant there was history.

Finally, Gabriele spoke.

“My mother.””

Federica stared.

The woman who raised the Romano brothers.

The woman whose family had been destroyed by Matteo’s death.

The woman who had just walked into a secure location without anyone stopping her.

Isabella Romano looked at Federica.

“You’re the accountant.””

Federica straightened.

“I have a name.””

A faint smile crossed Isabella’s face.

“Good.””

Gabriele looked annoyed.

“Why are you here?””

Isabella walked into the room.

“Because you found Matteo.””

The words hit harder than any gunshot.

Gabriele went still.

“What did you say?””

Isabella placed a folder on the table.

“Your brother isn’t dead.””

The room became silent.

Federica slowly looked at Gabriele.

For the first time since she met him, she saw him without the armor.

No controlled expression.

No cold calculation.

Just a younger brother hearing that the person he buried might still be alive.

“That’s impossible,” he said.

Isabella’s face tightened.

“No. What’s impossible is that you believed the story.””

Gabriele stepped closer.

“You attended his funeral.””

“Yes.””

“You watched them lower his coffin.””

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

Isabella opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Medical records.

Federica picked one up.

Her stomach tightened.

The name was Matteo Romano.

But the hospital records showed something else.

The patient had survived the accident.

He had been transported.

Then transferred.

Then disappeared.

“He wasn’t killed,” Isabella said quietly.

“Someone made sure everyone thought he was.””

Gabriele stared at the pages.

“Who?””

Isabella looked at him.

“The same person who took Leo.””

Federica’s mind raced.

The kidnapping.

The false death.

The financial accounts.

Everything connected.

But one question remained.

“Why wait eight months?””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“If Matteo was alive, why reveal himself now?””

Isabella’s expression changed.

Because she knew the answer.

“He didn’t.””

Federica frowned.

“What?””

“Matteo didn’t reveal himself.””

The room went cold.

“Someone else did.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A phone vibrating.

Everyone turned.

It was Gabriele’s phone.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Then a video appeared.

Gabriele watched.

His face changed.

Federica knew before he said anything.

Something was wrong.

“What is it?””

He turned the phone around.

The video showed a man sitting in a dark room.

Older.

Bruised.

Alive.

Matteo Romano.

Federica felt her breath catch.

Gabriele whispered one word.

“Brother.””

Matteo looked directly into the camera.

Then he spoke.

“Gabriele, if you’re watching this, they already know I failed.””

A pause.

Then Matteo leaned closer.

“And if Federica Ferrari is with you…”

The entire room froze.

“…do not trust her.””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Federica felt every eye turn toward her.

Including Gabriele’s.
