Chapter 10: The Truth Nobody Survived
The room went silent.
Federica stared at the screen.
The name remained.
Gabriele Romano.
The countdown continued.
Eight minutes.
Seven minutes.
Everyone waited for her to speak.
She couldn’t.
Because every answer she had built collapsed in one second.
Gabriele noticed.
“What did you find?””
Federica slowly turned.
Nobody liked the expression on her face.
Not because it showed fear.
Because it showed doubt.
“The system was activated by your credentials.””
Gabriele looked confused.
“What?””
“Your personal access.””
“That’s impossible.””
Federica looked back at the screen.
“I know.””
The words felt heavy.
Because she did know.
She knew systems.
She knew security.
She knew numbers.
And the system was not wrong.
Gabriele stepped closer.
“Tell me exactly what you saw.””
She hesitated.
Then:
“The command came from your account.””
Nobody moved.
Matteo looked at his brother.
“No.””
Gabriele’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
Because for a moment, even he wondered.
Federica saw it.
And that hurt more than she expected.
“You think I did this?””
Gabriele looked at her.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too quickly to fake.
“I don’t.””
“Then why do you look like you’re trying to convince yourself?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t have one.
The countdown reached six minutes.
Matteo moved toward the system.
“There has to be another explanation.””
Federica studied the code.
Then stopped.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
She leaned closer.
“This isn’t an activation.””
Gabriele frowned.
“What?””
“It’s a recording.””
The room froze.
She pointed at the screen.
“Someone copied your credentials.””
Matteo stepped closer.
“Can you prove it?””
Federica nodded.
“Yes.””
Her fingers moved quickly.
Years of spreadsheets.
Years of audits.
Years of finding tiny mistakes nobody else noticed.
The system began revealing hidden information.
A second user.
A secondary authorization.
A ghost account.
Federica’s eyes widened.
“I found it.””
Gabriele stepped forward.
“Who?””
She looked at the name.
And suddenly everything made sense.
“Antonio Romano.””
Matteo stared.
“But he’s dead.””
“Yes.””
Federica looked at the code.
“He built this before he died.””
The countdown stopped.
Five minutes.
Four.
Then the screen changed.
A final video appeared.
Antonio Romano again.
But this time, he looked different.
Tired.
Not powerful.
Human.
“If you reached this point, then you finally understood.””
Gabriele watched silently.
Antonio continued.
“I was not killed by an enemy.””
A pause.
“I was killed by my own mistake.””
Matteo stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Antonio looked directly at the camera.
“I created a system where loyalty mattered more than love.””
The words hit.
Even Gabriele looked away.
“I tested everyone. I manipulated everyone. I believed fear created strength.””
Antonio lowered his head.
“I was wrong.””
Federica felt something shift.
Because the monster everyone feared was admitting he had failed.
“I discovered someone inside the organization was stealing from us. But I did not know who.””
The video showed documents.
“Damian was involved.””
“Marco was involved.””
“But they were only pieces.””
The final document appeared.
The person controlling them.
Federica read the name.
Then stopped.
She understood now.
The entire conspiracy.
The kidnapping.
The money.
The fake death.
The attacks.
Everything.
The person behind it all was not one person.
It was an entire system.
A system Antonio had created.
A system designed to survive even after his death.
“He created the monster,” Federica whispered.
Gabriele looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed.
“Your father built this organization to protect the family.””
A pause.
“But the organization became the thing destroying it.””
The video ended.
The room stayed quiet.
Then Gabriele walked to Matteo.
“I’m sorry.””
His brother looked surprised.
“For what?””
“For believing power mattered more than you.””
Matteo looked down.
For years, they had been brothers separated by secrets.
Now, finally, they were just brothers.
Outside, Chicago continued moving.
Cars.
Lights.
People who had no idea how close the city came to watching a family destroy itself.
Days later, the story disappeared from newspapers.
No one outside the Romano world knew what happened.
Damian Voss was arrested.
Marco Bellini vanished before authorities arrived, leaving behind enough evidence to prove his betrayal.
The old system Antonio built was dismantled.
The companies were rebuilt.
Slowly.
Honestly.
As honestly as a family like theirs could manage.
And Federica Ferrari?
She never returned to being invisible.
Six months later, she opened her own forensic consulting firm.
Her first client was unexpected.
Romano Holdings.
Gabriele still annoyed her.
She still annoyed him.
Which, according to both of them, meant they were probably doing something right.
One rainy evening, she found him standing outside her office.
“You know,” she said, “most people call before showing up.””
“Most people aren’t me.””
“That’s exactly the problem.””
A small smile appeared on his face.
Almost.
He looked through the office window.
On her desk was a framed photo.
Not of money.
Not of success.
Of Leo.
Now walking.
Now laughing.
Alive.
“You saved him,” Gabriele said.
Federica shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“He saved me.””
Gabriele didn’t understand.
She smiled.
“I spent my whole life thinking being overlooked was a weakness.””
A pause.
“But sometimes being underestimated is the only reason you get close enough to see the truth.””
Behind them, the city lights reflected across the wet streets.
And somewhere deep beneath Chicago’s noise, a lesson remained.
The most dangerous secrets were never hidden from enemies.
They were hidden inside families.
May you like
But sometimes…
the person everyone ignored was the only one brave enough to find them.
