Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Mask
Richard and I left the dining room immediately.
Vanessa watched us walk away, confused.
She didn’t know what we had discovered.
She didn’t know her carefully controlled world was starting to collapse.
Inside my office, Richard locked the door.
“She knows.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“The message came from someone close to her.””
“Do you know who?””
“No.””
I stared at the phone.
Someone inside Vanessa’s circle had warned us.
That meant one thing.
There was more happening than we understood.
“Richard, tell me everything about Vanessa’s recent behavior.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“She changed about a year ago.””
“How?””
“She became obsessed with status.””
I listened carefully.
“She started judging everyone. Employees. Friends. Even family.””
“Did she ever mention Bennett House?””
“Constantly.””
“What did she say?””
Richard looked embarrassed.
“She said restaurants like yours were built on image, not talent.””
I smiled slightly.
“She never understood that image disappears when people see the truth.””
Richard looked at the documents.
“What are you going to do?””
“I’m going to find out why she did this.””
The next morning, I arrived at Bennett House early.
The restaurant was empty.
I sat at my desk reviewing every piece of information Richard gave me.
Then I found something strange.
A payment.
Not to a competitor.
Not to a business.
To a person named Laura Mills.
I searched my records.
The name was familiar.
Then I remembered.
Laura had been one of my first employees.
She had worked as a hostess when Bennett House was just a small restaurant.
But she disappeared two years ago.
I immediately called Daniel.
“Find Laura Mills.””
“Ethan?””
“Please.””
Three hours later, Daniel returned with information.
“She lives nearby.””
“Call her.””
An hour later, Laura walked into my office.
She looked nervous.
“Mr. Bennett.””
“Laura.””
She looked around.
“I didn’t think you remembered me.””
“I remember everyone who helped build this place.””
Her eyes filled slightly.
Then I placed the document on the desk.
“Why has Vanessa Parker been sending you money?””
Laura froze.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Finally, she whispered:
“She found me.””
“Who?””
“Vanessa.””
“Why?””
Laura looked down.
“Because she wanted information.””
“About Bennett House?””
She nodded.
I felt anger rising.
“What information?””
Laura’s voice became quiet.
“She wanted your private records.””
“What records?””
“Your expansion plans. Your suppliers. Your investors.””
I stood.
“Did you give them to her?””
Laura looked ashamed.
“At first.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
“Because she threatened me.””
“With what?””
Laura wiped her eyes.
“She knew about my past.””
I softened slightly.
“What past?””
“My brother had legal problems years ago. Vanessa found the records and said she would expose my family if I didn’t cooperate.””
I couldn’t believe it.
Vanessa wasn’t just arrogant.
She was dangerous.
“She blackmailed you.””
Laura nodded.
“I tried to stop. But she kept threatening me.””
“Why come here now?””
She looked at me.
“Because last night, I saw what she did to you.””
I said nothing.
“She didn’t know who you were. She treated you like you were worthless.””
Laura’s voice broke.
“And I realized she does that to everyone.””
I looked out the window.
For years, I had believed success would protect me from people like Vanessa.
I was wrong.
Money didn’t stop cruelty.
It only revealed it faster.
That evening, I returned home.
My phone rang.
It was Richard.
“Ethan, I found something.””
“What?””
“Vanessa has a hidden account.””
“How much?””
He paused.
“Almost two million dollars.””
I sat down.
“Where did it come from?””
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“It came from a company called Parker Holdings.””
“That’s your company.””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“Richard, are you saying your wife stole two million dollars from you?””
“I don’t know.””
A pause.
Then he said:
“But I found the withdrawal records.””
“Send them.””
Seconds later, my phone received the files.
I opened the first document.
And then I saw a signature.
Not Vanessa’s.
Not Richard’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone who had been connected to Bennett House from the very beginning.
A name I never expected.
I whispered:
May you like
“No…”
Because the person helping Vanessa destroy me was the last person I thought would betray me.
