Chapter 4: The Survivor in the Shadows
The first thing Callahan noticed was that Michael Carter looked old.
Not physically.
Not because of gray hair or scars.
Because for the first time, Callahan saw the weight the man had carried.
A burden too heavy for one person.
“Who was that?”” Callahan asked.
Carter did not answer.
“Michael.””
Still nothing.
Callahan slammed the folder onto the table.
“You disappeared for twenty-four years. You let me believe you were dead. You let your family mourn you. And now someone is inside Naval Intelligence threatening us.””
Carter looked up.
“I know.””
“Then talk.””
The silence lasted several seconds.
Finally, Carter said:
“His name is Daniel Voss.””
Callahan searched his memory.
The name sounded familiar.
“Voss?””
“Lieutenant Daniel Voss. Black Current operations team.””
Callahan froze.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Carter nodded.
“That’s what everyone thought.””
Callahan remembered the mission roster.
Nine men trapped.
Seven rescued.
Carter missing.
But Daniel Voss…
The official report said he had died during the explosion.
Another ghost.
Another impossible survivor.
“You’re telling me two people came back from the dead?””
Carter looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m telling you three did.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“Three?””
Carter nodded.
“Someone else was on that ship.””
“Who?””
Carter looked toward the window.
“Someone who was never supposed to be there.””
Callahan felt anger rising again.
“Michael, stop giving me pieces of a puzzle.””
“I’m trying to keep you alive.””
“I don’t need protection.””
“You do.””
Carter leaned forward.
“Richard, listen carefully. The mission wasn’t about recovering surveillance equipment.””
“Then what was it about?””
Carter looked at the Ghost Trident tattoo.
“It was about proving someone inside the Navy was selling secrets.””
Callahan went silent.
“Who?””
Carter reached into his pocket and removed another photograph.
This one was newer.
Taken recently.
It showed a man entering a government building.
Callahan recognized him.
His own superior.
A man currently sitting on the highest defense committee in Washington.
The same man who had approved the Black Current operation.
Callahan stared.
“That can’t be real.””
Carter’s voice was quiet.
“It is.””
A knock came at the door.
Both men turned.
The young intelligence officer stepped inside.
“Admiral, we have a situation.””
“What now?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“Someone accessed your personal military archive.””
Callahan’s expression hardened.
“What did they take?””
The officer swallowed.
“Everything related to Operation Black Current.””
Callahan looked at Carter.
The past had returned.
And it was hunting them.
“Who had access?”” Callahan asked.
The officer handed him a printout.
“There was only one authorization.””
Callahan read the name.
His face changed.
Because the person who accessed the files was not an enemy.
Not a foreign agent.
Not a stranger.
It was someone inside his own family.
His daughter’s name was written at the top of the page.

And beneath it was a message:
*Ask her why she visited Commander Michael Carter three weeks before he came back.*
