Chapter 1: The Woman in the Black Dress

“THAT DRESS IS MY ORIGINAL DESIGN!””

The words cut through the grand ballroom just as Brianna Vale stepped beneath the golden spotlight.

Two hundred guests turned.

Cameras flashed.

A champagne glass slipped from someone's hand and shattered against the marble floor.

Brianna froze at the top of the runway, one hand resting against the enormous red rose blooming across her waist.

Behind her, hundreds of crimson feathers trembled beneath the ballroom lights.

Her couture gown was breathtaking.

The fitted bodice shimmered with tiny hand-sewn crystals, while layers of scarlet silk cascaded down into a dramatic train. Two enormous wings, constructed from red feathers and artificial roses, stretched nearly eight feet behind her.

It was the kind of creation that made people forget to breathe.

And now a woman in a simple black dress was standing in the middle of the ballroom, pointing directly at it.

Brianna recognized her immediately.

Nia Carter.

A relatively unknown designer who had submitted a collection to the same competition.

A woman Brianna had dismissed as an amateur during the morning's rehearsals.

Brianna's cheeks flushed.

She gripped the microphone.

"Excuse me?"" she said.

Nia didn't move.

"Take that dress off the runway.""

A murmur spread through the audience.

Brianna forced a laugh.

"Security, could someone explain why this woman is interrupting my presentation?""

Nia stepped closer.

"That dress is mine.""

Brianna's smile disappeared.

"I designed every inch myself!""

"Then explain why the silhouette, the rose placement, and the feather construction are identical to the collection I submitted six months ago.""

Brianna lifted her chin.

"Lots of designers work with roses. Red feathers aren't exactly copyrighted.""

"Not the way I arranged them.""

Nia pulled a folded sheet of paper from her black clutch.

It was a photograph.

She held it up toward the judges.

The image showed a woman wearing a red couture gown with enormous feather-and-rose wings.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

The same asymmetrical neckline.

The same three-dimensional rose structure at the waist.

The same unusual arrangement of feathers, each one curved outward to resemble the petals of a blooming flower.

Even the tiny silver details along the bodice appeared identical.

Judge Harris leaned forward.

"Miss Carter, what exactly are you alleging?""

"That Brianna Vale is presenting my original design as her own.""

Brianna shook her head.

"This is ridiculous. I've been working on this collection for over a year.""

Nia's eyes narrowed.

"Interesting. Because I have photographs of my original sketches dated eleven months ago.""

Brianna turned toward the judges.

"She's desperate. Her collection didn't even make the shortlist. Now she's trying to destroy someone else's career.""

Nia's fingers tightened around the photograph.

"My collection didn't make the shortlist because someone made sure the judges never saw my final submission.""

A silence settled over the ballroom.

At the judges' table, Judge Harris removed his glasses.

"Let's slow down. Miss Carter, do you have evidence beyond a photograph?""

Nia stared at the gown.

Then she noticed something.

The neckline.

A small section of antique ivory lace peeked through the red silk.

Her expression changed.

"Wait.""

Brianna looked down.

"What?""

Nia walked closer to the runway.

"Look inside the neckline.""

Brianna instinctively covered the area with her hand.

"Don't touch my dress.""

"That lace shouldn't be there.""

Judge Harris stood.

"What lace?""

Nia pointed.

"The original lace.""

The room grew quieter.

Brianna laughed nervously.

"It's decorative. I sourced it from an antique textile dealer.""

Nia shook her head.

"No. That lace came from a wedding veil.""

Judge Harris stepped onto the runway.

"May I?""

Brianna hesitated.

"There's nothing to see.""

"Then you won't mind.""

The judge gently lifted the inner neckline.

Beneath the red silk, an intricate strip of antique ivory lace had been sewn into the lining.

It was yellowed with age.

Tiny embroidered flowers ran along its edge.

And near the center was a delicate pattern of intertwined leaves.

Judge Harris stopped breathing for a moment.

He leaned closer.

Then he carefully turned the fabric toward the ballroom lights.

"Good heavens.""

Brianna's fingers went cold.

"What?""

Judge Harris traced the embroidered detail without touching it.

"I've seen this exact detail before!""

Nia closed her eyes.

For the first time that evening, she looked less angry than heartbroken.

Brianna stared at the judge.

"That's impossible.""

Judge Harris looked directly at her.

"Where did you get this lace?""

"I told you. An antique dealer.""

"Which one?""

"I don't remember.""

"Who supplied it?""

Brianna swallowed.

"I have a team. I don't personally purchase every piece of fabric.""

Judge Harris looked back at the lace.

"This embroidery is not commercially available. It was made by hand. I remember it because I judged a restoration exhibition involving this exact pattern many years ago.""

Nia stepped forward.

"My grandmother made that embroidery.""

Every head turned.

Brianna looked at her.

"What?""

"My grandmother, Eleanor Carter. She was a seamstress. She embroidered wedding veils for women who couldn't afford expensive designers.""

Nia's voice trembled.

"She made that particular pattern for my mother's wedding.""

Judge Harris slowly lowered the fabric.

"Eleanor Carter?""

Nia nodded.

The judge looked suddenly pale.

"I knew Eleanor.""

Brianna took a step backward.

"How did that get inside my dress?""

Nobody answered.

And then, from the back of the ballroom, an elderly woman stood up.

She was wearing a navy-blue coat and holding a silver-handled cane.

Her eyes were fixed on the lace.

"Because," she said quietly, "that fabric was never supposed to leave my granddaughter's family.""

Nia turned.

"Grandma?""

The elderly woman began walking toward the runway.

May you like

Brianna stared at her.

For the first time that evening, the woman wearing the most expensive dress in the room looked completely terrified.
