Chapter 9: The Last Recording
The police found Dr. Pierce’s abandoned car two miles away.
But they didn’t find him.
And that terrified everyone.
Because a man who knew he was exposed was more dangerous than a man hiding a secret.
The next morning, my father received a package.
No return address.
Inside was a small memory card.
My mother’s handwriting was written on the envelope.
*For Emily.*
My hands shook as I held it.
My father sat beside me.
“Are you ready?””
No.
I wasn’t.
But I nodded.
We inserted the memory card.
One final video appeared.
My mother.
Again.
But this time, she wasn’t scared.
She was angry.
“Emily.””
Her voice was quiet.
“If you’re watching this, then I’m gone.””
I covered my mouth.
“But you need to know the truth.””
My father leaned closer.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“Karen betrayed me.””
A pause.
“But she wasn’t the person who destroyed me.””
I looked at my father.
The same words.
The same warning.
My mother continued.
“I discovered Dr. Pierce had been changing my medical records.””
My father’s hands tightened.
“He told everyone my condition was getting worse because he wanted people to believe I was incapable of making decisions.””
The video showed documents.
Medical reports.
Emails.
My mother had collected everything.
“I confronted him.””
Her voice lowered.
“He admitted he was working with Michael.””
I felt sick.
My mother continued.
“But the person who surprised me was Karen.””
A pause.
“She warned me.””
Everyone froze.
My father looked confused.
Karen had warned her?
My mother’s voice continued.
“Karen told me she wanted my life, my position, my family.””
A tear slipped down my face.
“But she said she didn’t want me dead.””
The video paused.
Then my mother said:
“The reason I’m recording this is because I don’t know who will betray me next.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“Emily, listen carefully.””
I moved closer.
“People can do terrible things when they believe they deserve what someone else has.””
My mother took a breath.
“But sometimes, people make terrible choices because they are afraid.””
The screen changed.
A new file appeared.
A hidden audio recording.
My father clicked it.
A conversation began.
Dr. Pierce’s voice.
“You promised me the company.””
Michael’s voice.
“And you promised she wouldn’t survive long enough to expose us.””
The room went silent.
Then Karen’s voice.
“No.””
She sounded terrified.
“I never agreed to that.””
Dr. Pierce laughed.
“You think you can walk away now?””
My father looked at me.
The truth was finally clear.
Karen was guilty.
Michael was guilty.
But Dr. Pierce had been the one controlling everything.
The recording continued.
My mother’s voice appeared.
“You’re making a mistake.””
A crash.
A struggle.
Then silence.
I covered my ears.
My father stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
Then his phone rang.
Police.
They had found Dr. Pierce.
But he wasn’t alone.
My father answered.
His face changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“No.””
He looked at me.
And I knew.
Something had happened.
“Dad?””
He lowered the phone.
“They found him.””
“Where?””
He swallowed.
“At the airport.””
I waited.
“But he wasn’t trying to escape.””
My heart pounded.
“What was he doing?””
My father looked at the memory card.
Then at me.
“He was waiting for someone.””
“Who?””
My father’s voice became barely a whisper.
“The person who financed everything.””
I felt cold.
Because I thought we had found every secret.
Every betrayal.
Every person involved.
But we hadn’t.
My father showed me the final message from the police.
A name.
A name that made my entire body freeze.
Because it wasn’t Karen.
It wasn’t Michael.
It wasn’t Dr. Pierce.
It was someone I had known my entire life.
Someone my mother trusted.
Someone who had been protecting me since the beginning.

The message said:
*The person meeting Dr. Pierce was your grandmother.*
