Chapter 8: The Name on the DNA Report

I couldn’t move.

The paper sat between us.

A simple sheet.

A few printed lines.

A name.

But somehow it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who is this?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

“Who?””

Her voice barely came out.

“Daniel.””

My blood went cold.

Daniel.

My best friend.

The man who stood beside me at my wedding.

The man who brought gifts for Maya every birthday.

The man who called her “little superstar.””

The man I trusted.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Marcus—”

“No.””

I pushed the paper away.

“That’s impossible.””

“He was Rachel’s brother.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Not by blood.””

She took a breath.

“He was adopted.””

I felt dizzy.

“So Daniel knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because Rachel told him.””

I stood up.

“You knew?””

Vanessa’s silence answered.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“I found out after Rachel died.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

There it was again.

That sentence.

The excuse people used when they wanted to hide something.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

I pointed at the papers.

“But somehow I’m always the last person to know.””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“I thought if you knew the truth, you would hate her.””

I froze.

“Hate who?””

“Maya.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Vanessa like I had never seen her before.

“You thought I would hate my daughter?””

“She wasn’t yours.””

“She was.””

“You didn’t know.””

“I knew enough.””

My voice broke.

“I knew she needed me.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Daniel wanted to tell you.””

“Where is he?””

She hesitated.

“He left.””

“Why?””

“Because he realized you were happy.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“It does when you understand Daniel.””

I hated that sentence.

Because every answer created more questions.

I left the house.

I needed air.

I needed space.

But most of all, I needed to find Daniel.

I called him.

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Nothing.

I drove to his apartment.

Nobody answered.

I knocked harder.

“Daniel!””

Silence.

Then I noticed something.

The door wasn’t fully closed.

My stomach tightened.

“Daniel?””

I pushed it open.

The apartment was empty.

Not abandoned.

Empty.

The kind of empty that happened when someone left quickly.

Drawers were open.

Books were missing.

A suitcase was gone.

Then I saw something on the table.

An envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Marcus,

If you’re reading this, then Vanessa finally told you.

I stopped.

My hands shook.

I wanted to tell you eleven years ago.

I wanted to tell you that Rachel trusted you because she knew you were the only person who would love Maya without conditions.

I swallowed.

The next line hurt.

But Vanessa was right about one thing.

I kept reading.

You might have looked at Maya differently if you knew the truth.

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

The letter continued.

Not because you are a bad man.

Because people are afraid of what they cannot understand.

I sat down.

Daniel knew me better than that.

Or maybe he knew something about me I didn’t want to admit.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

There is one thing Vanessa never told you.

My heartbeat increased.

The DNA test was not done because Rachel doubted you.

I frowned.

What?

It was done because Rachel suspected someone had been manipulating the adoption process.

I stopped breathing.

The next sentence made my entire body freeze.

Marcus, Maya’s real danger was never the question of who her father was.

I turned the page.

There was one final line.

The danger was the person who wanted you to believe she had no family left.

I looked around the empty apartment.

The room suddenly felt different.

Because this wasn’t just a family secret.

Someone had planned this.

Someone had carefully moved pieces around for eleven years.

My phone rang.

I answered immediately.

“Daniel?””

A woman spoke.

Not Daniel.

“Marcus?””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The voice trembled.

“My name is Rachel.””

I stood.

Impossible.

“Rachel died eleven years ago.””

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

“I know.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who are you?””

May you like

Her answer came softly.

“I’m the woman your wife told everyone was dead.””
