Chapter 7: The Brother Who Knew My Face

Agent Cole took my phone before I could reply.

"Nobody answers this message," she said.

"He's asking to meet me.""

"Which is precisely why you aren't going anywhere.""

"What if he's my brother?""

"Then we establish that safely.""

"What if he knows what happened?""

"Then we obtain that information without walking you into an ambush.""

I snatched my phone back.

"You keep saying the word safely as if every safe decision you've made hasn't led us into another nightmare.""

Agent Cole's jaw tightened.

"I understand you're angry.""

"No, you understand that I'm inconvenient.""

My mother stepped between us.

"Pulisic, please. We need to listen to her.""

I turned toward her.

"Why? Because she's the only person who knows how to hide the truth?""

She recoiled.

I hated myself for saying it, but I couldn't stop.

"How many things have you lied about?""

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

"I never lied about loving you.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She pressed a hand against her chest.

"I know.""

For a moment, the room was silent except for the wind pushing against the house.

Then Agent Cole's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and turned away from us.

When she finished, her expression had become unreadable.

"Daniel has been admitted to St. Catherine's under an assumed name.""

"Is he hurt?"" my mother asked.

"We don't know.""

"Then we have to go.""

"No," Agent Cole said.

"The hospital is being secured. We'll approach from the east entrance and keep the area clear.""

I stepped toward her.

"I'm going with you.""

She looked at my mother.

"Your son may be in danger.""

"My son is already in danger," Mom replied.

"He has been since the day Ethan brought him home.""

The words hit me hard.

She had never said anything like that before.

Agent Cole nodded.

"All right. But you stay with me, and neither of you approaches Daniel without my permission.""

We arrived at the hospital just before eleven.

St. Catherine's looked different at night. The emergency department glowed beneath harsh fluorescent lights, and ambulances moved through the entrance with their sirens muted.

A uniformed officer met us at the door.

"He's in a private examination room on the third floor. He asked for Pulisic specifically.""

My mother stopped walking.

"He knows about him?""

"He asked whether Sarah Bennett was coming.""

Mom's face crumpled.

"What did you tell him?""

"That we were trying to contact her.""

Agent Cole led us upstairs.

Two officers stood outside the examination room. Through the narrow window, I could see a young man sitting on the bed with his back to the door.

He wore a dark sweatshirt and jeans. A strip of medical tape covered the inside of his left forearm.

His hair was damp.

His shoulders were tense.

He looked like someone waiting for a verdict.

Agent Cole entered first.

"Daniel?""

The young man turned.

I forgot how to breathe.

It wasn't just that he looked like me.

It was the way he moved his head, the slight narrowing of his eyes, the tiny crease that appeared between his eyebrows when he was confused.

I had seen that expression in the mirror every morning for seventeen years.

Daniel stared at me.

Then he laughed once, without humor.

"So it's true.""

I stepped into the room.

"Who are you?""

He looked at my mother.

"That's a strange question for someone who has spent his whole life wearing my name.""

My mother covered her mouth.

Daniel looked back at me.

"My name is Daniel Bennett. At least, that's the name I was given when I was old enough to understand that nobody could tell me where I came from.""

"You're saying I'm using your identity?""

"I'm saying Ethan Pulisic raised one of us under the wrong name.""

He pulled a folded document from his pocket and handed it to Agent Cole.

"I found this in a storage unit three days ago.""

She unfolded it.

It was a copy of a birth record.

Two infants were listed on the page, their names separated by a thick black line.

One was registered as Daniel Bennett.

The other was registered under my name.

Beside each entry was a handwritten notation.

*BIOLOGICAL PARENTAGE: PENDING CONFIRMATION.*

Daniel pointed to the bottom of the page.

"Look at the signature.""

Agent Cole examined it.

"Ethan Pulisic.""

"He signed the original transfer order. He also signed a second document authorizing the destruction of the duplicate birth records.""

My mother shook her head.

"Why would he do that?""

Daniel looked at her.

"Because he knew one of us wasn't supposed to exist.""

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

He leaned back against the pillow.

"It means one of us was born to a woman who testified against Victor Hale. The other was born to a woman who helped Hale build his criminal network.""

My mother looked horrified.

"No.""

Daniel didn't look away.

"My entire life, I was told my mother died in childbirth. When I was thirteen, I found a photograph of a woman who looked exactly like you. Ethan told me she was a family friend.""

He reached into his bag and pulled out a photograph.

It showed my mother holding a newborn in a hospital bed.

The baby's face was turned toward her chest.

On the back, someone had written:

*SARAH AND DANIEL — FIRST MORNING.*

My mother began to sob.

"I never held you.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"That's what I thought, too.""

He passed the photograph to me.

The handwriting was my father's.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why did you come here?""

"Because I found out Ethan had been keeping a file on both of us. He knew where I lived. He knew where I went to school. He knew the names of every person I'd ever dated.""

He swallowed.

"Three weeks ago, he contacted me.""

"What did he say?""

Daniel's eyes moved toward the door.

"He told me my brother was in danger.""

I felt a chill.

"He told you about me?""

"He said you were living with a woman who had stolen my identity.""

My mother stepped forward.

"I didn't steal anything.""

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

"Then why did you let him raise you under my name?""

"I didn't know!""

"How could you not know?""

"Because I was recovering from childbirth! Because I was terrified! Because the man I trusted told me my baby was dead, and then he handed me another child and told me that child was mine!""

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at her.

My mother pressed both hands over her mouth.

She had just said something that none of us could ignore.

He handed me another child.

I looked at Agent Cole.

"Is that what happened?""

She closed the door.

"Sarah, we need to establish the biological identities of both young men before drawing conclusions.""

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

"You people have had twelve years.""

"We're trying to correct the record.""

"You're trying to correct the record now because Ethan escaped.""

Agent Cole's expression sharpened.

"How do you know he escaped?""

Daniel reached into his bag and removed a small digital recorder.

"He called me tonight.""

He pressed a button.

My father's voice filled the room.

"Daniel, if you're listening to this, it means you've found the hospital records.""

A pause.

Then Ethan continued.

"You deserve the truth. But if you go to the police, Sarah will tell you what she did. She'll make you believe she was protecting you.""

Another pause.

"I was the only person who knew which child belonged to which mother. I made a decision that night because the alternative was two dead babies and two dead women.""

My mother shook her head.

"He's lying.""

Daniel kept the recorder running.

"Sarah knows what she signed. She knows why one child had to disappear. And if you want to understand why I raised your brother, ask her what happened to Laura Bennett.""

The recording ended.

Daniel looked at my mother.

"Who was Laura Bennett?""

Mom stared at the floor.

"Your biological mother.""

Daniel's face changed.

For the first time since I had entered the room, he looked like a frightened child.

"You're saying Laura was my mother?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did Ethan tell me she died?""

My mother reached for him.

He pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

The words cut through her.

She lowered her hand.

Daniel looked at me.

"Do you know what it's like to grow up without a single photograph of your mother? To ask a man where you came from and be told that the woman who gave birth to you was too weak to survive?""

I couldn't answer.

He continued, his voice shaking.

"I used to imagine her face. I thought she had dark hair. I thought she might have loved books, because I loved books. I thought she might have been afraid of hospitals.""

He looked at my mother.

"And now you're telling me she was alive long enough to hold me, and someone took me away from her.""

Mom began to cry harder.

"I am so sorry.""

Daniel turned his face away.

Agent Cole examined the recorder.

"Daniel, do you have any idea where Ethan is now?""

"No.""

"Did he tell you to come here?""

"No. He told me to stay away from Sarah and to never contact Pulisic.""

He glanced at me.

"But I found something else in the storage unit.""

He pulled out a second envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a woman standing outside a courthouse. She was in her thirties, with dark hair and a serious expression.

I had never seen her before.

Daniel touched the photograph with one finger.

"This is Laura Bennett.""

My mother stared at it.

Then she whispered, "She's alive.""

Daniel looked at her.

"What?""

"Laura is alive.""

Agent Cole took the photograph.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the storage unit. It was taken three weeks ago.""

The agent examined the date stamped in the corner.

"That's impossible. Laura Bennett was reported dead twelve years ago.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Then someone lied.""

My mother moved toward the door.

"We have to find her.""

Agent Cole blocked her path.

"Sarah, wait.""

"No. If Laura is alive, she knows what happened to her son.""

Daniel's voice rose.

"She doesn't know who I am.""

My mother turned toward him.

"Then we tell her.""

For the first time, Daniel's anger seemed to falter.

He looked down at his hands.

"What if she doesn't want to see me?""

Mom's face softened.

"Then she can tell you that herself. But you deserve the chance to ask.""

He stared at her.

I watched them, feeling like a stranger inside my own family.

Two boys.

Two mothers.

One father who had somehow controlled all our lives.

Then Agent Cole's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds before turning toward the window.

When she spoke, her voice was barely audible.

"We found Laura Bennett.""

My mother grabbed her arm.

"Where?""

Agent Cole looked at Daniel.

"She's been living under federal protection for twelve years.""

Daniel stood so quickly that the medical equipment beside the bed rattled.

"Take me to her.""

The agent shook her head.

"There's a problem.""

"What problem?""

"She refuses to meet with either of you.""

Daniel's face fell.

"Why?""

May you like

Agent Cole hesitated.

Then she said, "Because she believes one of you killed her son.""
