Chapter 2: The Stranger’s Secret
The waiter’s name was Leo.
I learned that because he kept repeating it while trying to explain himself.
“Leo, slow down,” Emma said.
“What happened?””
He looked between us.
“I’m sorry. I know this sounds crazy.””
My hands rested on my wheels.
“Just tell me.””
Leo wiped his forehead.
“When I was taking a tray outside, I saw a black envelope under a car.””
“Whose car?”” I asked.
He hesitated.
“Ms. Whitmore’s.””
The air around me changed.
Claire.
Of course.
My first instinct was anger.
Then fear.
“What was inside?””
Leo looked at me.
“A document.””
“What kind of document?””
He lowered his voice.
“Your name was on it.””
Emma stepped closer.
“Daniel, maybe we should go see what this is.””
I nodded slowly.
But before we could move, Claire appeared at the end of the hallway.
Her face was different.
No perfect smile.
No confident posture.
Just fear.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“What did you do?””
She stopped.
The question clearly hit harder than she expected.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
Her eyes moved toward Leo.
Then Emma.
“Who told you something?””
Leo stepped back.
“I didn’t do anything wrong.””
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“You need to leave this conversation.””
Emma crossed her arms.
“He’s not leaving.””
Claire stared at her.
“And who are you?””
Emma smiled.
“Someone who noticed your fiancé was hurting before you did.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Claire looked back at me.
“Daniel, please. Don’t do this here.””
“Do what?””
“Make a scene.””
I laughed quietly.
The sound surprised even me.
“You’re worried about a scene?””
Her jaw tightened.
“I didn’t mean what I said.””
“Yes, you did.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“I was stressed.””
“You mocked me in front of your friends.””
“I made a stupid joke.””
“A joke?””
My voice grew louder.
“Was I supposed to laugh too?””
People in the hallway began watching.
Claire noticed.
She lowered her voice.
“You’re emotional right now.””
That sentence hurt more than the insult.
Because it was the same sentence people used when they wanted to dismiss pain.
Leo returned from the entrance holding a folder.
“Mr. Carter.””
Everyone turned.
The folder looked ordinary.
That somehow made it worse.
Leo handed it to me.
“I think you should open it yourself.””
My hands shook slightly as I pulled out the papers.
The first page was a contract.
A legal agreement.
My name.
Claire’s name.
And a signature.
I read the heading.
“Pre-marital financial agreement.””
I looked at Claire.
“You made this?””
Her face went pale.
“Daniel…”
The next page had something worse.
A clause.
A clause stating that if our engagement ended, certain assets would transfer immediately.
My assets.
My company shares.
My home.
I looked at the signature.
It was mine.
Except I had never signed it.
“What is this?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
She looked away.
That was when I knew.
The woman who had laughed at my wheelchair wasn’t just cruel.
She had been planning something.
“I can explain,” she whispered.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You can’t.””
She reached for me.
“Daniel, please listen.””
I moved away.
Emma watched Claire carefully.
“You forged his signature?””
Claire snapped.
“Stay out of this.””
Emma didn’t move.
“Answer the question.””
Claire looked at me.
For the first time, I saw desperation.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Daniel, someone is trying to frame me.””
“Who?””
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
A voice came from behind us.
“I think I know who.””
Everyone turned.
An older man in a dark suit stood near the doorway.
Richard Vale.
The foundation sponsor.
He looked at the document in my hand.
Then at Claire.
His expression was cold.
“Because this isn’t the first time she’s done it.””
Claire stepped back.
“Richard, don’t.””
Richard ignored her.
“Daniel, there’s something you need to know about your fiancée.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Claire.
“What?””
Richard reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small photograph.
He handed it to me.
My stomach dropped.
The picture showed Claire sitting across from someone at a restaurant.
A man I didn’t recognize.
But the date printed on the back made my blood run cold.
It was taken two months after my accident.
While Claire was telling me she loved me.
Richard whispered:
“She wasn’t waiting for you to recover.””
I stared at the photograph.
“Then what was she waiting for?””
May you like
Richard looked directly at Claire.
“She was waiting for you to die.””
