Chapter 5: The Footage Ethan Tried to Erase
Nobody spoke after Daniel opened the bag on the recording.
On the screen, he stood beneath the garage lights with one hand pressed against his mouth. The black bag lay open at his feet.
Whatever he had seen inside it had made him recoil.
Then the recording froze.
Margaret leaned closer to her laptop.
"No, no, no.""
She clicked the trackpad repeatedly.
The video remained frozen at 11:41 p.m.
"Can you recover the rest?"" I asked.
"I'm trying.""
Ethan moved toward the laptop.
"That's enough.""
Officer Ramirez stepped between him and the island.
"Please remain where you are, Mr. Cole.""
He stopped.
His eyes moved from the laptop to Daniel, who had returned through the front door with a second officer.
Daniel had heard enough of the conversation outside to understand what we had found.
He stared at the frozen image.
Then he whispered, "That's the bag.""
I turned toward him.
"What was inside it?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"But you opened it.""
"On that recording, yes. I don't remember that night clearly. I was exhausted, frightened, and looking for my brother. When I saw the bag in Ethan's garage, I thought Michael might have left something inside it.""
"What did you see?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Something wrapped in a gray blanket.""
I felt the room go cold.
"Was it Michael?""
"I couldn't tell. I didn't see a face. I panicked and backed away.""
"Why didn't you tell the police?""
"Because when I went back the next morning, the bag was gone. Ethan told me it contained stolen accounting records. He said Michael had used me to move company property without my knowledge.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I thought I'd made a terrible mistake. I thought I had somehow helped my brother disappear.""
Ethan's voice cut through the room.
"That's a lie.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"Then explain why I was in your garage.""
"You came to collect documents.""
"What documents?""
"Michael's files.""
"Why were they wrapped in a blanket?""
Ethan didn't answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
"You told me my brother had fled the country. You told me he was a thief. You told me he had betrayed everyone who trusted him.""
His voice broke.
"And I believed you.""
Ethan straightened his shoulders.
"You were desperate to find someone to blame.""
"Yes," Daniel said.
"I was. Because my brother vanished, and you were the last person who admitted seeing him.""
Officer Ramirez intervened before Daniel could move any closer.
"Everyone needs to remain calm. We are not going to establish what happened by shouting at one another.""
Margaret was still working at the laptop.
"There's another file.""
She opened a separate directory.
The system displayed a series of thumbnails from the garage camera.
One had been saved automatically at 11:46 p.m.
It showed Ethan standing beside the open trunk of his SUV. The black bag was gone.
He was holding a small metal object.
Margaret enlarged the image.
A key.
Not a car key.
A long brass key with a rectangular head.
I recognized it immediately.
It belonged to the storage cabinet in Ethan's home office.
The cabinet he had always told me contained old contracts and tax documents.
I looked at him.
"What's in that cabinet?""
"Nothing relevant.""
Margaret laughed without humor.
"That's what you said about the missing ledger.""
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"Stay out of my house, Margaret.""
She turned to Officer Ramirez.
"I believe the cabinet should be examined as part of the investigation.""
The officer made another note.
"That would require the appropriate legal process. For now, we need to preserve the footage and document the evidence.""
I stared at the laptop.
"Can we see what happened after 11:46?""
Margaret shook her head.
"The local backup is incomplete. The remaining data may still exist on the server, but we'll need technical assistance to recover it.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Claire, there's something else you should know.""
I turned toward him.
"Last month, Brooke asked me whether I remembered the night Michael disappeared.""
My heart began pounding.
"What did you tell her?""
"That I remembered almost nothing. She asked whether I'd seen Ethan that night. I said I had.""
He paused.
"Then she asked whether I'd told the police.""
"And?""
"I said yes.""
Daniel looked toward the front window.
"The next day, she told me she wanted a divorce.""
The words landed heavily.
"Did she explain why?""
"She said she couldn't live with someone who spent his life obsessing over the past.""
He laughed bitterly.
"At the time, I thought she was simply tired of my grief.""
I thought of Brooke standing beside my pool, begging me to think about Sophie.
"Maybe she was afraid you would discover what happened.""
"Maybe.""
He looked at the frozen footage.
"Or maybe she was afraid I'd remember something.""
A phone rang.
Ethan's.
He glanced at the screen and immediately rejected the call.
A second later, a message appeared.
He snatched the phone from the island.
But not before I saw the name.
*BROOKE.*
I stepped toward him.
"What does she want?""
"Nothing.""
"Show me.""
"No.""
"Then answer me.""
He turned away.
Officer Ramirez held out her hand.
"Mr. Cole, I need you to preserve any communications related to this matter. Do not delete messages or contact potential witnesses about the evidence we've discussed.""
Ethan looked at her.
"Are you accusing me of a crime?""
"I'm advising you not to interfere with an investigation.""
He shoved his phone into his pocket.
"I want a lawyer.""
"That's your right.""
He turned to me.
"Claire, we're leaving.""
I stared at him.
"I'm not going anywhere with you.""
His face hardened.
"You're my wife.""
"And you're a stranger standing in my kitchen.""
For a second, I thought he might say something cruel.
Instead, he looked wounded.
"You really believe these people over me?""
I glanced at Daniel, who was still staring at the screen as though he could somehow summon his brother from the pixels.
Then I looked at Margaret, who had spent six months trying to prevent the company she helped build from collapsing under Ethan's decisions.
Finally, I looked at the man who had shared my bed for eleven years.
"I believe the evidence," I said.
Ethan's expression went blank.
It was as if a switch had been flipped.
"Fine.""
He picked up his car keys.
Officer Ramirez stepped forward.
"Mr. Cole, please don't leave until we've finished documenting the scene.""
"I'm not under arrest.""
"No. But I'd appreciate your cooperation.""
He looked at her, then at me.
"This isn't over.""
He walked toward the stairs.
The officer followed him at a distance, speaking calmly about preserving evidence and remaining available for further questioning.
When they disappeared upstairs, Margaret shut her laptop.
"I need to call our legal department.""
Daniel sat heavily on a kitchen chair.
I poured him a glass of water.
He stared at it without touching it.
"Do you think Michael is alive?"" I asked.
Daniel looked up.
"I have spent seven months imagining every possible answer to that question.""
His voice trembled.
"Some days, I think he's alive and hiding because he's afraid of Ethan. Other days, I think he's dead, and everyone knows except me.""
I pulled out the chair beside him.
"I'm sorry.""
He nodded, but his eyes filled with tears.
"I should have done more.""
"You didn't make him disappear.""
"No. But I believed Ethan when he said my brother was a thief. I stopped calling people.
I stopped asking questions. I let Brooke convince me to move on.""
He covered his face.
"I let everyone tell me to accept that Michael was gone.""
I remembered Ethan's words.
Don't expect me to keep protecting you.
Suddenly, I wondered whether he had been threatening me or warning me.
My phone vibrated.
Another message from the unknown number.
*The bag was a diversion. Check the blue envelope behind the pool equipment cabinet. Brooke knows what's in it.*
I stared at the message.
Then I stood.
"Daniel, come with me.""
He looked up.
"Where?""
"Outside.""
We walked through the sliding doors toward the pool.
The water was calm again. The wineglasses had been collected, and the patio table had been wiped clean. Someone had folded the towels and placed them on the lounge chairs.
The ordinary neatness of the backyard felt obscene.
I crossed the patio to the equipment cabinet beside the filtration system.
It was a weatherproof storage unit where we kept spare filters, pool chemicals, and cleaning supplies.
I opened the door.
A faint smell of chlorine drifted out.
At first, I saw nothing unusual.
Then Daniel pointed toward the back panel.
"What's that?""
A corner of blue paper protruded from a narrow gap between the cabinet wall and the wooden frame.
I reached inside and pulled it free.
It was an envelope sealed with clear tape.
My name was written across the front.
*CLAIRE.*
The handwriting wasn't Ethan's.
It was Brooke's.
My fingers shook as I opened it.
Inside lay a folded sheet of paper, a small brass key, and a photograph.
The photograph showed Michael Whitmore standing outside a warehouse, holding a newspaper dated March fifteenth.
He looked tired.
But alive.
On the back, someone had written:
*If you're reading this, Ethan has already told you I'm gone. Don't believe him.*
I stared at the words.
Daniel took the photograph from me.
His face crumpled.
"Michael.""
He pressed the picture against his chest.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he looked at the key in my hand.
"That's the key to the warehouse.""
I turned over the folded paper.
It contained an address in Stamford and a single sentence.
*The person who knows where Michael is will come for this key.*
A car engine started in the driveway.
We both turned.
Ethan's SUV was backing out.
Officer Ramirez stood at the front door, speaking urgently into her radio.
"Ethan!"" she shouted.
He didn't stop.
The vehicle accelerated down the street.
Daniel ran toward the driveway, but the SUV had already disappeared around the corner.
I clutched the envelope.
"He knew we found it.""
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed Brooke's name.
He answered.
"Where are you?"" he demanded.
Her voice came through the speaker, shaking.
"Daniel, listen to me. You need to get Claire away from that house.""
"Why?""
"Because Ethan knows you found the key.""
Daniel looked at me.
"How do you know?""
A long silence followed.
Then Brooke whispered, "Because I was the one who put it there.""

Before Daniel could respond, she added six words that changed everything.
"And I know where your brother is buried.""
