Chapter 5: The Friend I Trusted

Ryan stood in the hallway like a stranger wearing a familiar face.

That was the hardest part.

I knew his smile.

I knew his laugh.

I knew the way he tapped his fingers against a table when he was nervous.

But now I was seeing something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear of being exposed.

“Jessica,” he said again.

I stepped away from my mother.

“Don’t.””

His expression tightened.

“I can explain.””

Everyone said that.

Every person who broke something said that.

“I’m tired of explanations.””

Ryan looked at the folder in Mr. Bennett’s hand.

Then at my mother.

Then back at me.

“How much do you know?””

I almost laughed.

“That’s your first question?””

He said nothing.

“You’re not asking if I’m okay.””

His eyes dropped.

“You’re asking how much I know.””

“Jessica—”

“No.””

I walked closer.

“Tell me something.””

He waited.

“Was any of it real?””

His face changed.

“What?””

“Our friendship.””

Silence.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

Ryan swallowed.

“Of course it was.””

“Then why?””

He looked away.

And for the first time, I saw the person behind the mask.

Someone who had been making choices for a long time.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

My voice rose.

“You signed my mother’s name.””

He looked at my mother.

“Linda, please tell her.””

My mother stepped back.

“No.””

Ryan looked shocked.

“Linda.””

“No more.””

Her voice shook.

But she continued.

“No more lies.””

Something changed in the room.

Ryan realized he had lost control.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

I stared at him.

“Actually, I think I finally do.””

He walked closer.

“Your father was going to destroy everything.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Mr. Bennett stepped forward.

“Careful, Ryan.””

Ryan ignored him.

“Your father didn’t understand business.””

I stared.

“What business?””

He laughed bitterly.

“The house. The investments. The accounts.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You stole from my family.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No,” he repeated.

“I saved your family.””

Everyone went quiet.

Ryan looked at my mother.

“She was drowning after your father died.””

My mother looked disgusted.

“I never asked you to do this.””

“You asked me to help.””

“I asked you to fix the leaking roof.””

Ryan’s face hardened.

“I did more than that.””

“That’s the problem.””

I watched them.

And suddenly I understood.

This wasn’t a romance.

Not really.

It was control.

Ryan didn’t love my mother.

He needed her.

He needed the house.

He needed access.

He needed someone who trusted him.

And my mother had been grieving.

A perfect target.

“I want you to leave,” my mother said.

Ryan stared at her.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

His expression became cold.

“After everything I did for you?””

My mother shook her head.

“After everything you did to me.””

Ryan laughed quietly.

“You think you know the truth now?””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He smiled.

And I hated that I recognized that smile.

It was the same smile he used when he thought he was smarter than everyone else.

“You should ask your mother why your father changed his will.””

The room went silent.

My mother went pale.

“What?””

Ryan looked at her.

“You didn’t tell her?””

My stomach dropped.

“Tell me what?””

No one answered.

I looked at my mother.

“Mom.””

She sat down slowly.

“Jessica…”

“What did he change?””

She looked at Mr. Bennett.

He sighed.

“Your father updated his will six months before his death.””

“Why?””

Mr. Bennett hesitated.

Then he opened another folder.

“He left the house and the majority of his estate to you.””

I stared.

“What?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Jessica…”

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked toward the hallway where Ryan stood.

“Of him.””

The room became completely still.

Ryan’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Anger.

“You’re really going to do this?””

My mother looked at him.

“You used me.””

“I protected you.””

“You lied to me.””

Ryan shook his head.

“You have no idea what I protected you from.””

Then he turned toward me.

“You think your father was perfect?””

My blood ran cold.

“Don’t talk about him.””

“You should know the truth.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“Your father had secrets too.””

I stared at him.

Everyone has secrets.

But something about the way he said it made my stomach twist.

“What secrets?””

Ryan smiled.

And I knew immediately.

He had been waiting for this moment.

“I think you should ask your mother why your father wanted to remove her from the will completely before he died.””

My mother gasped.

“That’s not true.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Isn’t it?””

I turned.

“Mom?””

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

And that scared me more.

May you like

Because Ryan might have been lying.

But my mother’s reaction wasn’t.
