Chapter 8: The Truth Comes With a Price

I invited Mark to dinner.

He looked suspicious immediately.

“You want to talk?””

“Yes.””

His eyes moved around the room.

Like he was searching for hidden cameras.

That hurt more than I expected.

Not because I wanted his trust.

Because I remembered when I used to have his.

We sat across from each other at the dining table.

The same table where he once told me I wasn’t enough.

Now I was the one holding the power.

“I know you found out,” I said.

He didn’t pretend.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked away.

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

A long pause.

Then:

“I saw a receipt.””

I stared at him.

“A receipt?””

“For the lottery ticket.””

I almost laughed.

Of all the possibilities.

A receipt.

The universe had a strange sense of humor.

“You searched my things.””

“I was trying to understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to find something.””

He didn’t deny it.

“Claire, you have to understand my position.””

I smiled sadly.

“My position?””

He leaned forward.

“I’m still your husband.””

I looked at him.

“That’s the first time you’ve remembered that.””

His face hardened.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You made choices.””

The silence was unbearable.

Then I walked to my purse.

I removed the folder.

The official documents.

The proof.

The number.

The thing that had changed my entire life.

I placed it on the table.

Mark stared at it.

For a moment, he looked like the man I married.

Shocked.

Speechless.

Human.

“How much?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

I wanted him to sit with the moment.

I wanted him to feel the weight of what he had lost.

“Seventy-three million dollars.””

His eyes widened.

A strange silence followed.

Then he whispered:

“Seventy-three…”

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

And suddenly, I saw the calculation begin.

Not love.

Not regret.

Calculation.

“You were going to tell me?””

I thought about that night.

The dreams I had.

The plans.

The excitement.

“Yes.””

“When?””

I looked at him.

“Before you walked in with Vanessa.””

His expression collapsed.

Because that was the part he couldn’t escape.

The timing.

The truth.

He had not lost a rich wife.

He had abandoned the woman who was already planning a better future for both of them.

“I didn’t know,” he whispered.

“No.””

I nodded.

“You didn’t.””

He reached across the table.

“Claire, we can fix this.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Please.””

“No.””

His eyes filled with panic.

Not sadness.

Panic.

“After everything we built?””

I looked at him.

“You destroyed it.””

“I can change.””

I believed him for a second.

Then I remembered.

People rarely change when they lose love.

They change when they lose control.

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was serious.

“Claire, you need to come to the office.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because Vanessa just filed a claim.””

I froze.

“What claim?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“She says the lottery money belongs partly to Mark.””

I looked at my husband.

He was watching me.

Waiting.

And suddenly, I understood.

This wasn’t over.

The woman who helped destroy my marriage was now trying to take the one thing that saved me.

And behind her…

Was Mark.

May you like

The man who thought he could leave me in the morning…

And still own my future by night.
