Chapter 10: The Bloodstone's Final Choice

The palace bells began ringing before sunrise.

Not the three ceremonial notes used to summon the royal council.

These were different.

Seven long, mournful strikes.

The ancient warning reserved for the fall of a monarch.

Sophie stood in the northern estate's entrance hall as the messenger delivered the final announcement.

"By declaration of the royal council, Amelia Harrington has assumed the title of Queen of Eldoria. His Majesty King William has been removed from his position due to alleged incapacity. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is under investigation for conspiracy against the crown.""

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

"They've done it.""

Adrian stepped forward.

"Who signed the declaration?""

The messenger handed him a document.

He examined it.

Then his expression hardened.

"Alexander.""

Sophie stared.

"He's still working with Amelia?""

"No," Adrian replied.

"Look at the date.""

The declaration had been signed the previous night.

Before Alexander had been shot.

Before he had helped them escape.

Sophie shook her head.

"Perhaps they forced him.""

Adrian looked at her.

"Perhaps.""

But Sophie remembered Alexander standing between her and Sebastian's gun.

She remembered his frightened expression.

And she remembered the way he had looked at Charlotte.

"He's hiding something," she whispered.

Elizabeth approached.

"Whatever he is hiding, we cannot allow Amelia to control the Bloodstone.""

Thomas entered carrying a royal map.

"I know where she has taken it.""

He placed the map on the table.

The ancient throne chamber was marked in red.

"The original foundation beneath the palace has a lower level. The first monarch built it as a sanctuary for the Bloodstone.""

Adrian nodded.

"The chamber of the first crown.""

Thomas looked surprised.

"You know about it?""

"Your mother showed me the entrance years ago.""

Sophie looked between them.

"Then why didn't anyone tell me?""

Adrian touched her shoulder.

"Because we hoped you would never need to go there.""

They returned to the palace through the eastern passage.

The streets were filled with soldiers.

Royal flags had been replaced by white banners bearing Amelia's silver crescent.

People watched from their windows.

Some bowed.

Others whispered.

A few shouted Sophie's name.

The kingdom had heard about the crystal's awakening.

But the new queen's proclamation had confused everyone.

Two women claimed the royal bloodline.

Two women claimed the throne.

And neither side was willing to surrender.

Inside the palace, Amelia had transformed the throne chamber.

The original royal banners were gone.

A new throne stood beneath the ancient ceiling.

The stolen Bloodstone rested on a golden pedestal before it.

Amelia wore a magnificent emerald gown.

Alexander stood beside her.

His shoulder was bandaged.

His face was pale.

Sebastian Harrington stood behind the throne, holding the leather case containing the original succession records.

When Sophie entered, Amelia smiled.

"How lovely. The family is finally complete.""

Sophie ignored her.

"Where is King William?""

"Resting.""

"Where?""

Amelia's smile faded.

"That is none of your concern.""

Elizabeth stepped forward.

"Where is my husband?""

Sebastian answered.

"His Majesty is receiving medical attention.""

"From whom?""

"Physicians loyal to the crown.""

Elizabeth laughed bitterly.

"You mean physicians loyal to you.""

Amelia lifted one hand.

"Enough. We are not here to discuss old grievances.""

She looked directly at Sophie.

"We are here to settle the succession.""

Sophie approached the Bloodstone.

"Give it back.""

Amelia laughed.

"Why? It belongs to the crown.""

"It doesn't belong to you.""

"Then let it decide.""

She gestured toward the pedestal.

Sophie felt the fragment inside her pendant grow warm.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Amelia, don't.""

The young woman looked at him.

"Father.""

Adrian's face tightened.

"Don't call me that.""

For the first time, Amelia's smile disappeared.

"You were supposed to raise me.""

"I didn't know who you were.""

"You knew my mother.""

"Yes.""

"You promised her I would have a future.""

Adrian looked toward Sebastian.

"Your father promised her power. I promised her safety.""

Amelia's eyes filled with anger.

"And you gave her neither.""

Sebastian placed the leather case on the throne.

"Enough. Let us finish this.""

He opened the case.

Inside were the original succession records.

The ancient parchment bore the seal of the first monarch.

Sebastian held it up.

"According to the royal law, the rightful ruler must be recognized by the Bloodstone and confirmed by the original succession record.""

Elizabeth shook her head.

"That is not the complete law.""

Sebastian smiled.

"Isn't it?""

Adrian stepped forward.

"The final paragraph was removed.""

Sebastian's smile faltered.

Sophie looked at her father.

"What final paragraph?""

Adrian removed a folded piece of parchment from his coat.

"Your mother gave this to me before she died.""

He unfolded it.

"The first queen added a final condition. The throne cannot be inherited by blood alone. The rightful ruler must willingly surrender the crown if the kingdom's survival requires it.""

Amelia laughed.

"That is nonsense.""

"It's written in the original language.""

"Then prove it.""

Adrian looked at Sophie.

"Use the fragment.""

Sophie touched her pendant.

The tiny green stone seemed to pulse beneath her fingers.

She approached the Bloodstone.

Amelia stepped forward.

"Don't touch it.""

Sophie continued walking.

"You're afraid of what it will show.""

Amelia raised her hand.

The guards lifted their weapons.

But Alexander suddenly stepped between them.

"Nobody moves.""

Sebastian turned.

"Alexander, get out of the way.""

"No.""

Amelia stared.

"Don't be foolish.""

Alexander looked at Sophie.

"There's something you need to know.""

Sophie stopped.

"What?""

He took a deep breath.

"The night of the ball, I didn't grab your wrist because I wanted to humiliate you.""

Sophie stared at him.

"Then why?""

Alexander lowered his voice.

"Because Amelia had told me that if the Bloodstone recognized your blood, it would reveal the location of the original succession record.""

Adrian's expression changed.

"How did she know that?""

Alexander looked at Amelia.

"Because she had already been inside the chamber.""

Amelia's face hardened.

Alexander continued.

"She wanted me to force you to touch the crystal. I thought I could use the information to prove that I was the rightful heir.""

Sophie shook her head.

"You used me.""

"Yes.""

"And now you want forgiveness?""

"No.""

Alexander looked toward Charlotte.

"I want you to know why I did it.""

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Then tell them everything.""

Alexander swallowed.

"Amelia never intended to marry into the royal family. She intended to use the Bloodstone to awaken an older memory.""

Sebastian reached for his weapon.

"That's enough!""

Alexander ignored him.

"The Bloodstone contains the memories of every ruler who ever touched it. But there is one memory it was designed to hide.""

Adrian nodded slowly.

"The first betrayal.""

Sophie looked at the crystal.

"What betrayal?""

Elizabeth answered.

"The truth about the first queen.""

She approached the pedestal.

"She was not the first woman chosen by the Bloodstone. She was the daughter of a queen who had been murdered by her own brother.""

The chamber fell silent.

Elizabeth continued.

"Her brother took the throne and rewrote the royal records. The first queen exposed him, but she refused to kill him. Instead, she created the Bloodstone so that the truth could never be erased again.""

Sophie looked at Amelia.

"That's what you wanted?""

Amelia's expression became cold.

"I wanted what should have belonged to me.""

Sebastian stepped toward the pedestal.

"Then let us stop talking.""

He grabbed the Bloodstone and forced his hand against its surface.

A flash of emerald light exploded.

But instead of illuminating him, the crystal turned black.

Sebastian screamed.

The symbols across the pedestal began to glow.

One after another, they formed a circle around the chamber.

Then a voice emerged.

An ancient female voice.

"Blood remembers what men erase.""

The entire room trembled.

Images appeared above the crystal.

A young woman wearing a royal crown.

A man standing behind her.

A dagger.

A palace corridor.

Then a second image appeared.

The same man, older now, standing beside a young princess.

Sophie recognized the face.

Her grandfather.

The first betrayal had been repeated.

Generation after generation.

The crystal revealed the truth of the royal family.

Sebastian Harrington had not been the mastermind.

He had been following orders from the previous generation.

And the same secret had continued into the present.

The image changed.

A young Elizabeth stood in a corridor, holding a bloodstained dagger.

Eleanor stood before her.

But instead of attacking her sister, Elizabeth was trying to protect her.

Then another figure appeared.

A young Prince Alexander.

He was holding the door open for Sebastian's soldiers.

The room fell silent.

Sophie turned toward Alexander.

He lowered his head.

"I didn't know they would hurt her.""

The image continued.

Sebastian's father entered the corridor.

He held a second dagger.

He struck Eleanor.

Then he disappeared into the shadows.

Elizabeth had not killed Sophie's mother.

Alexander had not ordered the attack.

The real murderer was the man standing beside the throne.

Sebastian Harrington.

The chancellor staggered backward.

"Destroy the crystal!""

But nobody moved.

The Bloodstone flashed again.

A final image appeared.

Eleanor, holding a newborn Sophie.

She was speaking directly into the crystal.

"My daughter must never inherit a throne built upon lies.""

The voice faded.

Then the crystal turned toward Sophie.

A golden crown appeared above it.

The entire chamber fell to its knees.

Amelia stared in disbelief.

"No.""

Sophie stepped forward.

The emerald light surrounded her.

The symbols began to move.

Then the Bloodstone spoke once more.

"Only the one who refuses the crown may carry its truth.""

Sophie understood.

Her mother had never wanted her to become queen.

She had wanted her to have the freedom to choose.

Sophie looked toward the throne.

Then she turned away.

"I don't want it.""

The emerald light intensified.

She continued.

"I don't want a crown that was stolen. I don't want a kingdom ruled by fear. And I will not become the kind of person who destroys others just to sit on a throne.""

The crystal shattered.

Not violently.

Its surface broke into thousands of tiny emerald fragments that floated in the air like stars.

Then the pieces settled gently into Sophie's hands.

A deep silence followed.

Sebastian dropped to his knees.

His guards lowered their weapons.

Amelia stared at the fragments.

"How could you destroy it?""

Sophie looked at her.

"I didn't destroy it.""

She opened her hands.

The fragments had formed a small silver crown.

"The crystal made its choice.""

The truth spread through Eldoria within hours.

Sebastian Harrington was arrested.

The original succession records were restored.

King William, whose memory had been deliberately poisoned for years, was brought before the royal physicians and eventually recovered enough to confess his role in allowing Harrington to control the court.

Amelia was imprisoned for treason, although Sophie refused to have her executed.

Alexander surrendered his claim to the throne.

He also publicly admitted his involvement in the conspiracy and asked the kingdom to judge him by his actions rather than his birth.

Charlotte became the most outspoken voice in the new council.

And Elizabeth finally stood before the people to tell them what had happened to Eleanor.

But Sophie made one decision that surprised everyone.

She refused the throne.

Instead, she demanded that the kingdom establish a council elected by its people, with the royal family serving as guardians of the constitution rather than unquestioned rulers.

It took months of arguments.

Several nobles resigned.

Some threatened rebellion.

But the people supported her.

For the first time in Eldoria's history, the throne no longer belonged to one bloodline.

Six months later, Sophie returned to Westmere.

The little cottage where she had grown up still stood beside the lavender fields.

Her father's health had improved.

He was sitting outside when she arrived, repairing an old wooden chair.

"You're late," Adrian said.

Sophie smiled.

"Some things never change.""

He stood and embraced her.

Inside, the kitchen smelled of fresh bread and lavender.

A small photograph rested on the mantelpiece.

Eleanor.

Smiling.

Beside it was the silver pendant.

Sophie had placed it there the day she returned.

She sat beside her father.

"Do you think Mother would have been happy?""

Adrian looked at the photograph.

"She would have been proud.""

Sophie smiled.

"Even though I refused the crown?""

He laughed softly.

"Especially because you refused it.""

Outside, the evening wind moved through the lavender.

For a moment, Sophie could almost hear her mother's voice.

The old lullaby.

The one she had never forgotten.

She closed her eyes.

Then a knock sounded at the door.

Adrian rose.

"Are you expecting someone?""

Sophie shook her head.

He opened it.

A royal messenger stood outside, holding a small velvet box.

"Princess Sophie, a final message has arrived from the capital.""

Sophie frowned.

"I am not a princess anymore.""

The messenger smiled.

"Perhaps not, Your Grace. But the kingdom still remembers what you did.""

He handed her the box.

Inside lay a small piece of emerald crystal.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

My dearest Sophie,

If the Bloodstone ever breaks, remember that its purpose was never to choose a ruler.

It was to remind people that no crown is greater than the truth.

You were never born to inherit a kingdom.

You were born to give it back to its people.

With all my love,

Mother.

Sophie pressed the note against her heart.

For the first time since the night of the royal ball, she cried without fear.

And somewhere beneath the ancient palace, the broken Bloodstone began to glow again.

Not emerald.

Not blue.

May you like

But a warm, golden light.

The light of a kingdom finally free.
