Chapter 4: The Man Who Never Left
The entire house changed the second Leon Mercer entered.
People who worked for Victor Romano didn’t panic.
They prepared.
Guards moved into position.
Doors locked.
Phones disappeared into hands.
Everyone knew one thing:
A man like Leon did not return unless he believed he had already won.
I stood beside Victor in the main hallway.
He looked calm.
But I saw his hand tighten.
Only slightly.
Enough to know he was angry.
The front doors opened.
Leon walked inside.
No weapon.
No fear.
Just a perfectly tailored suit and the same confident smile he had worn at the ballroom.
“Victor.””
Nobody answered.
Leon looked around.
“Is this how you welcome an old friend?””
Victor stepped forward.
“You tried to kill me.””
Leon sighed.
“Is that what she told you?””
His eyes moved to me.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
“You really are Daniel’s daughter.””
I felt cold.
“You remember me.””
“I remember everything.””
Victor’s voice lowered.
“What do you want?””
Leon smiled.
“The truth.””
Dmitri, still pale from his injury, stepped forward.
“You don’t get to ask for anything.””
Leon looked at him.
“You were always loyal.””
Then he looked at Victor.
“Too loyal.””
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain the champagne.””
Leon laughed softly.
“You think I poisoned it?””
“You were the last person holding the glass.””
“Yes.””
“Then why shouldn’t I believe it?””
“Because if I wanted you dead, Victor, you would be dead.””
The confidence in his voice was terrifying.
I watched Victor carefully.
Because part of him believed Leon.
That was the dangerous part.
“You’re saying someone framed you,” Victor said.
“I’m saying someone wanted us fighting each other.””
Leon looked at me.
“And she walked right into it.””
My anger rose.
“You sent that message.””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Leon didn’t answer.
That scared me more than a lie.
Victor stepped closer.
“Where have you been?””
Leon’s smile disappeared.
“Finding out who betrayed us.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
A pause.
“But I expect you to believe this.””
He reached into his jacket.
Every guard raised weapons.
Victor lifted a hand.
Leon slowly removed a folder.
He threw it onto the table.
“Open it.””
Victor didn’t move.
“Why?””
“Because inside that folder is the reason Daniel Hart disappeared.””
I stepped forward.
Victor looked at me.
Then opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Bank transfers.
Names.
My father’s name appeared repeatedly.
But not as a criminal.
As a witness.
As someone investigating corruption.
Someone who was close to exposing the truth.
Victor turned another page.
Then another.
His expression changed.
“What is this?””
Leon looked at him.
“The reason your father died.””
The room became silent.
“My father?””
Leon nodded.
“Your father wasn’t killed because of Daniel Hart.””
Victor’s face darkened.
“Then who killed him?””
Leon looked toward the staircase.
Toward the upper floors.
Toward the people inside Victor’s own home.
Then he said:
“The person who has been controlling this family from the beginning.””
I looked at Victor.
“Who?””
Leon opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, a gunshot exploded from above.
The bullet struck the folder.
Papers flew through the air.
Everyone reached for weapons.
Victor pulled me behind him.
The second shot came.
Closer.
Then silence.
A guard ran upstairs.
A few moments later, he returned.
His face was pale.
“Boss…”
Victor looked at him.
“What?””
The guard swallowed.
“We found the shooter.””
“Who?””
The guard looked at me.
May you like
And then said:
“It was Clara Whitmore.””
