Chapter 6: The Man I Called Family
There are moments when your entire life splits into two parts.
Before.
And after.
Before that message, Antonio Romano was my family.
After it, I wasn't sure if the word family meant anything anymore.
I ran upstairs.
Not because I was angry.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because my daughters were there.
And for the first time in my life, I understood something Isabelle had always known.
Power meant nothing if you couldn't protect the people who mattered.
“Dominic!””
Marcus followed.
I turned.
“No.””
“You can't go alone.””
“I have to.””
“He wants you alone.””
“Exactly.””
Marcus grabbed my shoulder.
“That is a trap.””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Because my daughters were upstairs.
Because Olivia had finally called me Daddy.
Because Nora had finally trusted me enough not to hide.
Because Sophie had been carrying a secret inside a five-year-old heart for over a year.
I removed Marcus's hand.
“Because I'm their father.””
The hallway was dark.
The security lights flickered.
I reached the top of the stairs.
“Antonio.””
No answer.
I walked forward.
The old office door was open.
Inside, the lights were off.
Then I heard a voice.
“You came.””
I stopped.
Antonio stepped out from behind the desk.
Older than I remembered.
Tired.
Not afraid.
That was the worst part.
“You used my daughters.””
His face changed slightly.
“Careful.””
“Careful?””
My voice echoed.
“You put your hands on my children.””
“I never hurt them.””
“You don't get to decide what hurts them.””
For a moment, Antonio looked almost sad.
Then he smiled.
“That is exactly what Isabelle said.””
My fists tightened.
“You murdered her.””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
“I didn't.””
“Then tell me who did.””
Antonio looked toward the window.
“You still don't understand.””
“Explain.””
“You think this is about Isabelle.””
“Isn't it?””
“No.””
He turned back.
“This is about you.””
I stared at him.
“Everything is always about me.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“This time, it's about what you built.””
I stepped closer.
“My organization?””
“Yes.””
“You betrayed me for money?””
Antonio laughed softly.
“Money?””
He shook his head.
“You really think I wanted money?””
“Then what?””
He looked at me.
“I wanted to stop you.””
The words were quiet.
But they carried weight.
“Stop me from what?””
“Becoming your father.””
The room froze.
I hated that sentence.
Because it touched something buried.
Something I never discussed.
My father had been many things.
A powerful man.
A feared man.
A man who taught me that love was weakness.
I had spent my entire life trying not to become him.
And maybe I had failed.
“You think you're different from him?””
Antonio continued.
“You tell yourself you're protecting your family.””
He stepped closer.
“But every person around you lives afraid.””
I looked toward the hallway.
At the place my daughters were hiding.
Antonio noticed.
“That look.””
“What?””
“That is the first time I've ever seen you realize fear doesn't belong to everyone else.””
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to destroy him.
But then I heard something.
A small sound.
A whisper.
“Daddy.””
I turned.
Olivia stood at the doorway.
Behind her were Sophie and Nora.
My heart dropped.
“Why are you here?””
Olivia looked at Antonio.
Then at me.
“Because Mommy said you would need to hear it.””
I froze.
“What?””
Olivia walked closer.
She held something in her hand.
A small recording device.
Old.
Scratched.
Used.
“I found it in Mommy's room.””
Antonio's expression changed.
For the first time.
Real fear.
“Give that to me.””
Olivia stepped back.
“No.””
His face hardened.
“Olivia.””
I moved between them.
“Don't say her name.””
Antonio stopped.
The little girl pressed the button.
A voice filled the room.
Isabelle.
My wife.
My dead wife.
“Dominic, if you are hearing this, then I failed to tell you the truth myself.””
My knees almost gave out.
The recording continued.
“I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
Then:
“The person who betrayed us is not the person you think.””
I looked at Antonio.
He looked away.
Isabelle's voice continued.
“The man who killed me…”
The room became silent.
Everyone listened.
“…was trying to protect you.””
I stopped breathing.
Then her final words played.
And they changed everything.
“Because Dominic, the person who ordered my death…”
A crackle.
A breath.
May you like
Then:
“was you.””
