Chapter 9: The Woman Who Never Died

Nobody spoke.

Even the rescue workers had stopped moving.

Marcus looked at Lena.

“Explain what you just said.””

Lena held his hand tightly.

“Sarah is alive.””

Whitmore laughed.

“That's absurd.””

Lena turned toward him.

“You know it's true.””

Whitmore's smile faded.

Marcus felt his heart pounding.

“Where is she?””

Lena glanced toward the front gate.

“Not here.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere your father arranged for her to hide.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Sarah was declared dead. There was a funeral.””

“Yes.””

“Lily was told her mother died.””

Lena looked at the little girl.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””

Lily began crying.

“Is my mommy alive?””

Lena knelt.

“Yes.””

The little girl dropped her blue blanket and ran into her arms.

Marcus looked at Whitmore.

“How did you fake a death?””

Whitmore straightened his jacket.

“I have no idea what you're talking about.””

Lena reached into her pocket.

This time, she produced a small photograph.

It showed Sarah standing beside a hospital bed.

A newborn baby rested in her arms.

On the back was a date.

Six months after the accident that supposedly killed her.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“Where was this taken?””

“Private clinic outside Boston,” Lena replied.

“Why was she there?””

“She was recovering from surgery. Your father had arranged a new identity for her.””

Marcus looked at Whitmore.

“You helped him.””

Whitmore remained silent.

Lena continued.

“Sarah discovered the hospital switch. She knew Lily wasn't the child she had been told to raise. But when she tried to expose the truth, your father threatened her.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then why fake her death?””

“Because Richard needed her out of the picture. But he couldn't risk killing her. She was the only person who could prove what happened at St. Mary's.””

Whitmore interrupted.

“That's enough.””

Lena ignored him.

“Your father promised Sarah that Lily would inherit part of the family estate. He created a second will.””

Marcus looked at the lawyer.

“And you hid it.””

Whitmore's jaw tightened.

“Your father was not of sound mind when he signed it.””

“Convenient.””

“He was being manipulated.””

“By whom?””

Whitmore didn't answer.

Lena pointed toward Vanessa.

“By her.””

Marcus turned.

Vanessa looked devastated.

“Me?””

Lena nodded.

“You and Whitmore were working together.””

Marcus stared at his wife.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not the way she's saying.””

“Then what way?””

Vanessa looked toward the children.

“Richard was going to give everything to Lily. He wanted to erase Marcus from the business and make the child his sole heir.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he believed you were weak.””

The words hit him hard.

Vanessa continued.

“He thought you would never protect the family name. He wanted someone he could control.””

“And you agreed to help him?””

“At first.””

“What changed?””

Vanessa looked toward Ava.

“I fell in love with her.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Then why keep lying?””

“Because the moment I tried to leave, Whitmore threatened to take her away.””

Lena shook her head.

“You could have gone to the police.””

“I tried!””

Vanessa turned toward Marcus.

“Three months before your father died, I went to his office. I told him I wanted to end the arrangement. He showed me photographs of you and Ava. He told me that if I spoke, he would make sure you both disappeared.””

Marcus stared.

“And you never told me?””

“I was afraid.””

“Were you afraid when you locked Elizabeth beneath our pool?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't put her there.””

Lena looked at her.

“You signed the order.””

“I signed it because Whitmore told me Elizabeth was dangerous!””

“You knew she wasn't.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

The detective stepped forward.

“Mrs. Reed, I need you to come with me.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Please.””

He said nothing.

She turned toward Ava.

“Sweetheart?””

Ava stepped behind Marcus.

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“Don't you want to come with Mommy?””

Ava shook her head.

“Not until you tell the truth.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Then she finally nodded.

“Okay.””

The detective escorted her toward the front entrance.

Whitmore remained beside the table.

Harris approached him.

“Mr. Whitmore, I have several questions about the alleged second will, the hospital records, and the attempted removal of evidence.””

Whitmore looked at his watch.

“My attorney will contact you.””

“You're not leaving.””

He was handcuffed.

For the first time, his polished appearance began to crumble.

As the officers led him away, he looked back at Marcus.

“You think you've won?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Whitmore smiled.

“Your father knew this would happen.””

Then he leaned closer.

“Ask your daughter what she remembers about the night she was born.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Whitmore was taken outside.

The door closed.

The house became quiet.

Lena sat on the sofa beside Elizabeth.

The three girls gathered around them.

Marcus approached.

“What did he mean?””

Lena looked at Ava.

“She's been having memories?””

Marcus nodded.

“She remembers hearing knocking.””

“That's not all.””

Elizabeth reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small cassette tape.

“Your father recorded something before he died.””

Marcus looked at it.

“What is it?””

“His final confession.””

Lena nodded.

“He wanted me to keep it safe.””

“Why didn't you give it to the police?””

“Because I didn't know whom I could trust.””

Marcus took the tape.

“Where can we play it?””

Lena pointed toward the study.

“Your father's old tape recorder should still be there.””

Marcus walked into the room.

Dust covered the bookshelves.

The mahogany desk remained exactly where he remembered it from childhood.

He found the recorder inside a cabinet.

He inserted the cassette.

Pressed play.

A click.

Then static.

His father's voice emerged.

“If this recording has been found, I assume Richard Whitmore has failed to keep his promise.””

Marcus gripped the edge of the desk.

His father continued.

“I made mistakes. Terrible mistakes. But there is one thing I never told my son.””

A pause.

“I did not arrange the hospital switch to steal a child.””

Marcus frowned.

His father's voice grew weaker.

“I arranged it because one of the babies was already marked for death.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“The child I wanted protected was not Lily. It was Ava.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

His father's voice trembled.

“Sarah's daughter was born with a rare condition. The hospital records were altered because someone had paid the staff to make sure she never left the building alive.””

Marcus stared at the recorder.

His father continued.

“I discovered the plan too late. I switched the bracelets because I believed I could save the child by hiding her identity.””

A long silence followed.

Then another voice entered the recording.

Whitmore's voice.

“You should have left things alone, Richard.””

Marcus froze.

His father answered.

“You killed Sarah.””

Whitmore laughed.

“She was a problem.””

“And you will answer for it.””

There was a loud thud.

The recording crackled.

Then Marcus heard his father struggling to breathe.

“Marcus,” his father whispered.

“If you're hearing this, protect Ava. The person who ordered the hospital switch is not Vanessa.””

Marcus leaned closer.

His father's final words were barely audible.

“It's the man who delivered her.””

The tape ended.

Marcus stared at the recorder.

Dr. Whitmore.

The doctor who had signed Ava's birth certificate.

The man his father had trusted.

The man who had supposedly retired years earlier.

Marcus rushed back into the living room.

“Lena, do you know Dr. Richard Whitmore?””

She nodded.

“He was the obstetrician.””

“Where is he now?””

Elizabeth looked toward the window.

“I heard he moved to London.””

Marcus pulled out his phone.

He searched for the hospital records.

Then he stopped.

A notification had appeared on the screen.

An unknown number had sent a photograph.

It showed a man standing outside the mansion.

He was holding a newspaper.

The headline read:

*LOCAL DOCTOR FOUND DEAD IN PRIVATE CLINIC.*

Below it was a photograph of Dr. Richard Whitmore.

Marcus looked toward the door.

Another message appeared.

You should have stopped digging.

Then a second message.

The doctor wasn't the one who switched the babies.

Marcus stared at the screen.

A third message arrived.

Look at the birth certificate again.

He opened the hospital document.

At the bottom, beneath the doctor's signature, was a second authorization.

A witness signature.

He enlarged it.

His blood turned cold.

The name was unmistakable.

*Vanessa Reed.*

But the date was wrong.

The document had been signed six months before Vanessa and Marcus had even met.

He looked at Elizabeth.

“Did Vanessa know my father before I met her?””

Elizabeth's face changed.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She worked for his private medical foundation.””

Marcus felt the room tilt.

His wife hadn't met him by accident.

His father hadn't introduced them by coincidence.

Their marriage had been arranged long before he ever fell in love.

Then Lena suddenly stood.

“Marcus.””

He turned.

She was staring at the window.

Outside, a woman had stepped through the front gate.

She wore a beige coat and carried a small black handbag.

Her hair was short.

Her face was older.

But Marcus recognized her from the photograph.

Sarah Collins.

The woman everyone believed was dead.

Lily screamed.

“Mommy!””

Sarah opened the glass doors.

She looked directly at Marcus.

Then at the three children.

And finally, at the photograph in his hand.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

Marcus approached her.

“Who arranged my marriage to Vanessa?””

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

She looked toward the empty chair where Whitmore had been sitting.

Then she answered.

“Your father didn't arrange it.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then who did?””

Sarah placed her handbag on the table.

She removed a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Vanessa standing beside a young man.

Marcus recognized the man immediately.

It was himself.

The photograph had been taken before he and Vanessa had supposedly met.

Sarah looked at him.

“Vanessa was already married when she came into your life.””

Marcus stared.

“To whom?””

Sarah turned the photograph over.

A handwritten name appeared on the back.

*Richard Reed.*

Marcus's father.

May you like

And beneath it, a date.

The date of their wedding.
