Chapter 1: The Girl in the Red Dress

“STOP THIS WEDDING!””

The little girl’s voice exploded through the luxurious ballroom.

Three hundred guests turned simultaneously.

At the front of the room, beneath a ceiling covered in crystal chandeliers, eight-year-old Lily Carter stood beside an older woman dressed in navy blue. Her bright-red party dress looked almost painfully out of place among the champagne-colored gowns, tailored tuxedos, and extravagant floral arrangements.

In the older woman's right hand was a small black USB drive.

The bride's smile disappeared.

The groom stopped breathing.

And somewhere near the back of the ballroom, a champagne glass slipped from someone's fingers and shattered against the marble floor.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Lily tightened her grip on the older woman's hand and stepped toward the microphone.

“You need to see the truth!””

Her voice trembled slightly, but she didn't back away.

The bride, Victoria Harrington, stood beneath an enormous arch of white roses. Her custom designer gown glittered under the chandeliers. A diamond necklace rested against her collarbone, and a veil embroidered with delicate pearls fell down her back.

Until thirty seconds ago, she had looked like the happiest woman in the world.

Now she looked terrified.

“Who let that child in here?”” Victoria demanded.

Her voice carried across the ballroom.

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

The groom, Daniel Whitmore, turned toward the disturbance. He was thirty-five, handsome, and the heir to a successful hotel development company. His black tuxedo was perfectly fitted, and his expression had been relaxed moments earlier.

Now his eyes were fixed on the little girl.

“Lily?””

The child nodded.

Daniel stepped away from the altar.

“Sweetheart, what are you doing here?””

The older woman in navy moved slightly in front of Lily.

“Let her speak, Daniel.””

He recognized the voice.

His face changed.

“Margaret?””

Margaret Ellis had worked as his family's housekeeper for nearly twenty years. She had helped raise him after his mother died, attended his college graduation, and sat beside him during his father's funeral.

But she had disappeared from the Whitmore estate seven months earlier.

Daniel had been told she retired and moved away.

“What happened?”” he asked.

Margaret's eyes were wet.

“I wish I could tell you this was a mistake.””

Victoria took a step forward.

“Daniel, darling, please don't entertain this nonsense. This is a private wedding.””

Margaret looked directly at her.

“That's exactly the problem, Victoria. You've spent months making sure nobody knows what happens in private.””

A murmur traveled through the ballroom.

Victoria's mother, Eleanor Harrington, immediately stood from the front row.

“Security!””

Two men in black suits began moving toward the stage.

Daniel raised his hand.

“Wait.””

The guards stopped.

He looked at Lily.

“What's on that USB?””

Lily lifted the little black drive.

“Something you need to see.””

Daniel crouched until they were eye level.

“Does it have something to do with me?””

Lily nodded.

“It's about your wedding.””

He glanced toward Victoria.

His bride was no longer smiling.

Instead, she was staring at the USB as if it were a loaded weapon.

“Lily,” Daniel said gently, “where did you get this?””

Margaret answered.

“From someone who wanted the truth to come out before you signed your marriage certificate.””

Daniel stood slowly.

“Who?””

Margaret looked at Victoria.

“Someone who isn't alive to tell you herself.””

The ballroom fell silent.

Victoria's face turned pale.

“That's enough,” she snapped.

“Margaret, whatever money you're demanding, this is not the place.””

Margaret didn't blink.

“I don't want your money.””

“Then what do you want?””

“To give Daniel something you stole from him.””

Victoria laughed nervously.

“Stole? This is ridiculous.””

She turned toward the guests, trying to recover her composure.

“I'm so sorry, everyone. Margaret was dismissed from our household months ago. Clearly, she's having difficulty accepting that things have changed.””

Margaret's jaw tightened.

“Dismissed?””

She glanced at Daniel.

“You never told him why you fired me, did you?””

Daniel frowned.

“Victoria, what is she talking about?””

Victoria reached for his arm.

“Daniel, please. We can discuss this after the ceremony.””

He gently pulled away.

“No. I want to know now.””

Margaret placed a hand on Lily's shoulder.

“Show him.””

Lily looked at the USB again.

Then she walked toward the DJ booth.

The little girl's shoes clicked against the polished marble.

The DJ, a young man named Jason, looked at her uncertainly.

“Um, miss? Are you supposed to be here?””

Margaret approached behind her.

“Please. Just connect it.””

Jason glanced at the older woman, then at Daniel.

Daniel nodded.

“Do what she says.””

Jason moved aside.

Lily climbed onto a small platform beside the DJ equipment. She was barely tall enough to reach the laptop comfortably.

Her fingers shook as she held the USB drive.

“It's okay,” Margaret whispered.

“You're doing the right thing.””

Lily inserted it.

A small notification appeared on the laptop screen.

Jason clicked the drive.

Several folders appeared.

One was labeled:

*FOR DANIEL — BEFORE THE WEDDING.*

Another contained a single video file.

The file name was:

*CAMERA_04_FINAL.mp4*

Victoria suddenly rushed toward the DJ booth.

“Turn that off!””

Daniel caught her arm.

“Victoria!””

She jerked around.

“Let go of me!””

“Why are you afraid of a video?””

“Because this woman is trying to humiliate us!””

Margaret raised her voice.

“Let everyone see what happened!””

Jason clicked the video.

The massive projection screen above the ballroom stage flickered.

For two seconds, it showed a dark, grainy image.

Then a timestamp appeared.

*OCTOBER 14 — 11:43 P.M.*

A security camera view of a hospital corridor filled the screen.

A woman in a white coat walked past a nurses' station.

A second figure appeared behind her.

The camera quality was poor, but the woman's face was recognizable.

Victoria.

Gasps spread through the audience.

Victoria froze.

Daniel's grip tightened around her arm.

“What is this?””

Victoria stared at the screen.

“Turn it off!””

The video continued.

Victoria looked over her shoulder, entered a hospital room, and closed the door.

A few seconds later, the screen went black.

The room erupted in whispers.

Daniel stared at the projection.

“That's St. Mary's Hospital.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why was Victoria there at eleven forty-three at night?””

Victoria pulled her arm free.

“I was visiting someone.””

“Who?””

She didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Victoria, who were you visiting?””

Her eyes darted toward her mother.

Eleanor Harrington stood motionless beside the first row of chairs.

Margaret noticed.

“So she hasn't told you either.””

Daniel turned.

“Told me what?””

Margaret took a slow breath.

“Your mother didn't die the way you were told she did.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

Daniel stared at her.

“Don't.””

“Daniel—”

“Don't you dare bring my mother into this.””

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“I held her hand when she died. I was there when she asked me to protect you.””

Victoria shook her head.

“This is insane. She's manipulating you.””

Margaret turned toward her.

“You should know, Victoria. I kept the original recording.””

Victoria's lips parted.

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.

Daniel looked between them.

“My mother died three years ago. The doctors said it was a heart condition.””

Margaret nodded.

“That is what the death certificate says.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Before Margaret could answer, Eleanor stepped forward.

“Security, remove them immediately.””

But Lily moved in front of the laptop.

“No!””

Her small voice cut through the commotion.

“Please don't let them take it!””

Daniel looked at her.

“Lily, why does this matter so much to you?””

The little girl swallowed.

“Because my mommy said your mommy tried to tell the truth.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

Daniel's face changed.

“Your mommy?””

Lily nodded.

“She knew your mother.””

Victoria looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.

Daniel crouched again.

“What is your mother's name?””

Lily whispered something.

And when Daniel heard it, his expression collapsed.

“That's impossible.””

May you like

Because Lily's mother was the one person he had spent the last three years believing had abandoned him.

*And she was supposed to be dead.*
