Chapter 9: The Woman Before All of Us
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The coffee shop continued around us.
People laughed at nearby tables.
A barista called out someone’s order.
A spoon clinked against a ceramic cup.
But at our table, everything felt frozen.
I looked at Natalie.
Then at my phone.
Then back at Natalie.
“You’re telling me Derek was married before you?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“But you said you were his first wife.””
“I thought I was.””
The way she said it scared me.
Not because she sounded confused.
Because she sounded like someone who had just discovered another layer of a nightmare she thought was over.
“How could you not know?””
Natalie looked down.
“Because Derek erased her.””
The word sat between us.
Erased.
Not divorced.
Not separated.
Erased.
“What does that mean?””
Natalie opened the folder she had brought.
She pulled out a photograph.
A woman stood beside Derek.
He looked younger.
The smile was the same.
The confident expression.
The arm around her shoulder.
The same charm.
The same performance.
The woman beside him was pregnant.
My stomach tightened.
“Who is she?””
Natalie swallowed.
“Her name is Vanessa.””
“Where is she now?””
“That’s what nobody knows.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What do you mean?””
Natalie looked at the photo.
“After Derek and I got together, he told me Vanessa was unstable. He said she had problems and disappeared.””
I stared at the picture.
“Did you believe him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he made me believe I was lucky.””
That sentence hit harder than I expected.
Because I knew exactly what she meant.
Derek had a way of making love feel like something you had to earn.
Like being chosen by him was a privilege.
Natalie continued.
“After I left Derek, I started searching.””
“For Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because something bothered me.””
“What?””
She looked directly at me.
“The timeline.””
I waited.
“Derek told me he had never been married before me.””
My throat tightened.
“But he had.””
“Yes.””
“And then he told me you didn’t exist.””
I looked down.
“He told me the same thing.””
Natalie nodded.
“That’s how he works.””
The pieces started connecting.
Every lie.
Every missing detail.
Every time Derek changed the subject.
He didn’t just hide things.
He created different versions of himself for different people.
A husband.
A victim.
A provider.
A wounded man who needed saving.
But underneath all of it was someone calculating.
Someone who always had an exit plan.
My phone buzzed again.
Jonathan.
This time, I answered immediately.
“Tell me what’s happening.””
His voice was serious.
“Claire, we need to meet.””
“What did you find?””
“I found Vanessa.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Natalie.
She immediately understood.
“Where?””
Jonathan hesitated.
“She’s in Ohio.””
The room felt smaller.
“Is she okay?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she contact me?””
“She tried.””
I closed my eyes.
Another attempt.
Another person Derek blocked from reaching me.
“Why now?””
Jonathan was quiet for a moment.
“Because she saw your case in the news.””
My stomach dropped.
“What did she say?””
“She said Derek has done this before.””
I gripped the phone.
“Before what?””
“Before creating a life with someone, controlling them, and then preparing to destroy them if they leave.””
Natalie closed her eyes.
Like she had heard the words before.
“Can I talk to her?””
Jonathan paused.
“Yes.””
“Now.””
The next morning, we met Vanessa.
She was nothing like I expected.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t dramatic.
She looked tired.
Like someone who had spent years carrying a truth nobody wanted to hear.
When she saw me, she stopped.
“You’re Claire.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked at Natalie.
Then back at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone kept apologizing to me.
For things they couldn’t undo.
“Why are you sorry?””
“Because I should have found you sooner.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What happened?””
Vanessa sat down.
“Derek found me when I was twenty-six.””
I listened.
“He was charming. He remembered everything I said. He made me feel like I was the only person in the world.””
I looked away.
The same story.
Different woman.
“He proposed quickly.””
“How quickly?””
“Four months.””
My stomach turned.
Derek and I got engaged after five.
Vanessa continued.
“After we married, things changed.””
“Money?””
She nodded.
“Control.””
My hands tightened.
“What happened to your child?””
Her face changed.
Pain crossed it.
“I lost the baby.””
The words were barely audible.
I froze.
“I’m sorry.””
She nodded.
“After that, Derek changed completely.””
“How?””
“He said I was broken.””
I felt sick.
“He blamed you?””
“Yes.””
Of course he did.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Then he started collecting things.””
“Things?””
“Messages. Arguments. Anything he could use against me.””
I thought of Derek’s file.
Claire’s Expenses.
Potential custody concerns.
“He was building a case.””
“Yes.””
The room went quiet.
Then Vanessa reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day it would matter.””
“What is it?””
She pushed it toward me.
“A letter Derek wrote.””
My fingers shook as I opened it.
The handwriting was his.
The words were worse.
*People are easier to control when they believe they need you.*
I stopped breathing.
The rest of the letter was worse.
He wrote about marriage like a strategy.
Like women were investments.
Like love was a transaction.
At the bottom, one sentence stood out.
*The mistake was letting Claire’s family become involved.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Your father.””
I stared.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“Your father was the first person who challenged him.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“He knew.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Maybe he tried.””
And suddenly, I remembered.
The warnings.
The questions.
The fear in his eyes.
My father wasn’t trying to ruin my marriage.
He was trying to save me.
That afternoon, Jonathan called.
His voice sounded relieved.
“We have enough.””
I looked at Emily sleeping beside me.
“Enough for what?””
“To prove Derek’s pattern.””
I closed my eyes.
“Will it end?””
Jonathan didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“It should.””
But I knew Derek.
Nothing ended when he wanted something.
That night, I received a message.
No number.
No name.
Just three words.
*Check your email.*
I opened my laptop.
There was one new message.
From Derek.
May you like
The subject line made my heart stop.
*The child you never knew about.*
