Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Elena’s Secret

I spent the next morning trying to convince myself that Tasha had been lying.

It would have been easier.

Anger is simple.

Betrayal is simple.

But confusion is exhausting.

Because confusion forces you to question everything.

Malcolm barely slept.

He sat at my kitchen table all night surrounded by papers, old photographs, and documents that seemed to create more questions than answers.

At sunrise, he finally looked up.

“I need to find Elena’s family.””

I poured coffee into a mug and sat across from him.

“Tasha said Elena had a sister.””

“She did?””

“You didn’t know?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I studied his face.

The sadness there was different now.

Before, he was hurt because he thought he had failed Isaiah.

Now he was hurt because he realized there were parts of his own marriage he never knew.

“How could you not know?”” I asked softly.

He looked down.

“Because Elena didn’t talk about her past much.””

“Why?””

“She said she wanted to leave it behind.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Leave it behind.

People don’t usually hide ordinary things.

They hide painful things.

Malcolm searched through old records until he found a name.

A woman named Claire.

Elena’s older sister.

He found an old phone number attached to a medical record.

We called.

The phone rang four times.

Then a woman answered.

“Hello?””

Malcolm froze.

He looked at me.

Then whispered:

“Claire?””

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

“Who is this?””

“My name is Malcolm Reed.””

The woman stopped breathing.

“I’m Elena’s husband.””

Another silence.

Then her voice changed.

“You shouldn’t have called me.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

She sounded afraid.

“Because if you’re calling now, something happened.””

Malcolm looked at the documents.

“Isaiah’s money is missing.””

The line went completely quiet.

Then Claire whispered:

“I knew this would happen.””

I leaned closer.

“What would happen?””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“Where are you?””

“Can you meet us?””

She hesitated.

Then gave us an address.

A small coffee shop on the other side of town.

When we arrived, I immediately understood why Elena never talked about her.

Claire looked almost exactly like her.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same sadness.

For a second, I felt like I was seeing a ghost.

Claire stood when Malcolm approached.

She looked at him.

Then at Isaiah’s photograph in his hand.

“He looks like her.””

Malcolm swallowed.

“He misses her.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“You knew about him?””

“I knew everything.””

Malcolm looked shocked.

“Then why didn’t you contact me?””

Claire looked down.

“Because Elena asked me not to.””

“Why?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Because she was afraid.””

The word sat between us.

Afraid.

“Afraid of what?”” Malcolm asked.

Claire looked around before speaking.

“Before Elena died, she found out someone was accessing money that belonged to Isaiah.””

My hands went cold.

“Did she know it was Tasha?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“She suspected.””

Malcolm looked devastated.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she thought you would confront Tasha.””

“And?””

“And she was afraid Tasha would make sure Isaiah was taken away from everyone who loved him.””

I felt anger rise.

“She threatened her?””

Claire looked down.

“Not directly.””

“Then how?””

“She told Elena she had no idea how to raise a child alone. She said she had already done enough. She told Elena that if she caused problems, she would make sure everyone saw her as unstable.””

Malcolm clenched his jaw.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked at him.

“You loved Elena.””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t know everything she was carrying.””

That hurt him.

Because it was true.

Claire reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small notebook.

“I kept this because I promised Elena.””

Malcolm took it.

“What is it?””

“Her journal.””

My heart stopped.

“Why give it to us now?””

Claire looked toward the window.

“Because Isaiah deserves the truth.””

Malcolm opened the journal.

The first few pages were ordinary.

Memories.

Thoughts.

Motherhood.

Then the entries changed.

The final months before Elena’s death.

One entry was underlined.

“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””

Malcolm read silently.

Then another.

“I need to protect Isaiah’s future, even if everyone hates me for it.””

He turned the page.

His hands started shaking.

“What?””

He didn’t speak.

I took the journal.

The entry was only a few lines.

But those lines changed everything.

“Elena wrote:

‘I found proof that Isaiah’s account was changed without my permission. But the worst part isn’t the money. It’s what Tasha told me afterward. She said Isaiah will never know the difference because he is just a child.’”

I looked up.

Malcolm’s face had gone pale.

Claire whispered:

“There’s more.””

“What?””

“Elena made a copy of everything.””

“Where?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she said:

“She told me she hid it somewhere only Isaiah would find.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

Claire looked at Malcolm.

“She said the answer was in the one thing she knew Tasha would never throw away.””

We all sat there trying to understand.

Then Malcolm suddenly stood.

“The house.””

“What?””

“The old house.””

He looked at me.

“Elena’s old house.””

But before we could leave, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Tasha.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

May you like

My blood ran cold.

“Stop looking for answers you won’t survive knowing.””
