Chapter 6: The Truth Behind My Disappearance
The darkness swallowed the house.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then we heard footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Coming closer.
Richard.
My mother pulled me behind her.
Even after twenty years, she still protected me the same way.
Like I was seven years old.
Like I was still the little girl hiding behind her dress.
“Mom,” I whispered.
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
“Why?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because I should have found a way to tell you the truth.””
The footsteps stopped outside the bedroom.
Mr. Bennett stepped forward.
“Richard.””
A low laugh came from the hallway.
“Still protecting people who don’t need saving, David?””
The door opened.
Richard Cole stood there.
Older than the man in the photograph.
But the same cold expression.
The same calm smile.
“I knew this day would come.””
Mr. Bennett’s voice was filled with anger.
“You destroyed my family.””
Richard shrugged.
“No. You did that yourself.””
My fists clenched.
“You lied to me.””
Richard looked at me.
“Did I?””
“You knew my mother was alive.””
“Yes.””
The answer was so casual that it shocked me.
“You knew?””
Richard smiled.
“And I knew you would eventually find the letters.””
My mother stepped forward.
“You don’t get to talk to her.””
Richard looked at her.
“Elena. Still pretending you’re the victim.””
My mother’s face hardened.
“You tried to destroy David’s company.””
Richard laughed.
“No. I tried to take what I deserved.””
Mr. Bennett stared at him.
“You stole from the foundation.””
Richard walked into the room.
“You built an empire because I helped you. I was there before everyone knew your name.””
“You were my friend.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“Exactly.””
The word felt poisonous.
“Friends don’t get half of what they build. They get forgotten.””
My mother looked at me.
“He found out I discovered the accounts.””
Richard looked annoyed.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
“You threatened me.””
“I warned you.””
“You followed us.””
“I protected my investment.””
My stomach turned.
“Investment?””
Richard looked at me.
“You really don’t know anything, do you?””
Mr. Bennett stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
But Richard continued.
“Your mother wasn’t running from your father.””
He looked directly at me.
“She was running from me.””
The room became silent.
My mother started crying.
“I tried to expose him,” she whispered.
“I gathered proof.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked at me.
“Because he threatened you.””
My chest tightened.
“He said he would hurt you if I went to the police.””
Richard rolled his eyes.
“A little dramatic, don’t you think?””
I stared at him.
“You took my childhood away.””
He looked almost bored.
“You had a childhood.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I had a mother who was afraid every day.””
Richard’s expression finally changed.
Anger.
“You have no idea what your father did.””
Mr. Bennett frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard smiled.
“Ask Elena.””
Everyone looked at my mother.
She went pale.
“David…”
“What?””
She looked down.
“There is something I never told you.””
My father froze.
“What?””
My mother wiped her tears.
“When Richard threatened us, I searched for a way to stop him.””
She took a shaky breath.
“I found evidence.””
“Of what?””
She looked at him.
“Of what happened before Amara was born.””
The silence was unbearable.
My father stepped back.
“What are you saying?””
My mother looked at me.
“I wasn’t running because Richard stole money.””
She paused.
“I was running because I discovered your father had another secret.””
My heart stopped.
Mr. Bennett looked devastated.
“What secret?””
My mother whispered:
“The company you built…”
May you like
She looked at him.
“Wasn’t built the way you think.””
