Chapter 6: The Child My Father Left Behind
I spent the next hour staring at that hospital record.
I checked it again and again.
The same name.
The same hospital.
The same impossible date.
My entire life had been built around facts.
My birthday.
My childhood.
My father's death.
My mother's sacrifices.
And now one piece of paper was making me question everything.
"Marcus.""
My mother reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
Not because I hated her.
Because I didn't know what I felt.
"Was I adopted?""
Her face broke.
"No.""
"Then what is this?""
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie to me.""
She looked down.
"I never lied about loving you.""
The words hurt because they were true.
My mother loved me.
I knew that.
But love didn't mean there weren't secrets.
"Tell me everything.""
She sat down.
"I met your father when I was twenty-eight.""
I listened.
"We had trouble having children.""
My throat tightened.
"You told me you couldn't have kids.""
She nodded.
"That's what the doctors told us.""
"Then?""
She looked at the old box.
"Then one day, your father came home with a baby.""
I froze.
"What?""
"He was holding you.""
My heart pounded.
"He told me you were a miracle.""
My mother wiped her tears.
"He said he found out about you through someone connected to him.""
"Who?""
She looked at me.
"Richard Hale.""
The room went silent.
"So Richard is my biological father?""
She shook her head quickly.
"No.""
"Then whose son am I?""
My mother looked away.
"Your father never told me everything.""
I stood.
"Mom.""
She cried.
"I swear, Marcus. I loved you from the first moment I held you.""
"But you didn't know who I was?""
"I knew you were my son.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She had no answer.
And somehow, that was the answer.
I left the room.
Downstairs, Nia was waiting.
She looked at my face.
"What happened?""
I couldn't even explain it.
"My entire life is a lie.""
She stepped closer.
"Marcus.""
"My father wasn't my father.""
Her eyes widened.
"What?""
I handed her the hospital record.
She read it.
Then looked at me.
"This can't be real.""
"That's what everyone keeps saying.""
She touched my arm.
"I know what it feels like.""
I looked at her.
She looked surprised.
Then she whispered:
"To discover the people you trust kept things from you.""
The irony almost made me laugh.
"My wife is giving me advice about secrets.""
She looked down.
"I deserve that.""
For once, she didn't fight.
And that made me feel even worse.
Because anger was easier.
Forgiveness was harder.
My phone rang.
Richard again.
I answered.
"What do you want?""
His voice was calm.
"To tell you the truth.""
"You've done nothing but lie.""
"No, Marcus. Your mother lied.""
I looked toward the stairs.
"Why should I believe you?""
"Because I have proof.""
"What proof?""
A pause.
"Your father left something with me.""
"What?""
"Something that explains why he brought you into his life.""
My grip tightened.
"Where are you?""
"I think it's time we met.""
"No.""
"Then your mother will continue hiding the truth.""
I looked at Nia.
She shook her head.
"Don't go alone.""
Richard continued:
"Bring your wife if you want.""
I froze.
"How do you know about Nia?""
A quiet laugh.
"Because I know everything.""
The call ended.
I stood there.
A man I had never met knew my family better than I did.
My wife had secrets.
My mother had secrets.
My father had secrets.
And now a stranger was offering me answers.
I looked at Nia.
"You're coming with me.""
She nodded.
"Okay.""
Before we left, I went upstairs one more time.
My mother was still sitting there.
She looked at me.
"You're meeting him.""
It wasn't a question.
"Yes.""
She closed her eyes.
"Marcus, please.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard doesn't want to help you.""
"Then what does he want?""
She looked at me.
And the fear returned.
"The same thing he wanted thirty years ago.""
I waited.
She whispered:
"To take everything your father left behind.""
I frowned.
"My father left behind nothing.""
My mother looked at the wooden box.
Then at me.
"That's where you're wrong.""
She reached inside and pulled out the silver key.
The key she had hidden for thirty years.
"This opens a place your father never wanted anyone to find.""
I took it.
"What place?""
My mother looked toward the window.
And when she answered, her voice barely came out.
"The place where your father hid the proof that Richard Hale destroyed our family.""
I looked down at the key.
Then at the front door.
Because for the first time, I wasn't just searching for the truth about my past.
May you like
I was walking toward the reason my father died.
And somewhere in the city, Richard Hale was waiting for me to arrive.
