Chapter 8: The Queen's Last Secret

"She needs to be taken to her private chambers immediately!""

Prince Adrian carried Queen Eleanor toward the royal staircase.

Two physicians hurried beside him while guards cleared the crowded ballroom.

Elia followed, but a palace officer blocked her path.

"You must remain here.""

"She's the queen!""

"And you are under investigation.""

Adrian stopped.

"Move.""

The officer hesitated.

"Your Highness, the council—"

"I don't care what the council says. That's my mother.""

The guard stepped aside.

Elia followed them upstairs.

Thomas remained behind, staring at the medical file.

He looked toward Mr. Whitmore.

"That signature. Is it genuine?""

Whitmore examined the page carefully.

"No.""

"How can you be sure?""

"I watched the queen sign official documents for thirty years.""

Thomas lifted the report.

"Then whose signature is it?""

Whitmore looked toward the ballroom doors.

"Margaret's handwriting was always remarkably similar to Eleanor's.""

Inside the queen's private chambers, the physicians placed Eleanor on a velvet sofa.

Adrian stood beside her, refusing to let anyone move him.

Elia waited near the window.

The room was filled with silver ornaments, old portraits, and fresh white flowers.

On a small table beside the sofa stood a framed photograph of the king and queen on their wedding day.

Eleanor opened her eyes.

"Adrian?""

"I'm here, Mother.""

"Where is Elia?""

Elia approached.

"I'm here, Your Majesty.""

The queen reached for her hand.

"Don't leave.""

Elia sat beside her.

The physician checked Eleanor's pulse.

"Her Majesty experienced a severe emotional shock. She needs rest.""

Adrian nodded.

"Thank you, Doctor.""

When the physician left, Eleanor looked toward the door.

"Close it.""

Adrian obeyed.

Then he returned to the sofa.

"Mother, what did Margaret mean when she said you remembered everything?""

Eleanor stared at the portrait of her husband.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she spoke.

"Twenty-two years ago, I discovered that your father was in love with Evelyn Brooks.""

Elia's breath caught.

"Your Majesty...""

"Please let me finish.""

Eleanor squeezed her hand.

"I was devastated. I had already given your father eight years of my life. We had you together. I believed our marriage was strong.""

She looked down.

"But when I learned he had fathered a child with another woman, I felt as though the entire palace was laughing at me.""

Adrian sat down.

"Did you know Evelyn was pregnant?""

"I did.""

"Then why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Because Margaret promised she would handle everything.""

Elia's stomach tightened.

"What did she do?""

Eleanor looked toward the window.

"She arranged for Evelyn to leave the palace. She told me the child would be raised quietly, far from the court. She said it was the only way to prevent a public scandal.""

Elia looked away.

"She separated us.""

"Yes.""

The queen's voice broke.

"I was angry. I was jealous. I wanted the woman who had hurt me to disappear from our lives.""

Adrian stared at her.

"Did you know Margaret planned to take the children?""

Eleanor shook her head.

"Not at first.""

"Then what happened?""

"Your father discovered that Evelyn had given birth to twins. He wanted both children acknowledged. He intended to give them royal protection and arrange for them to live on a private estate.""

Elia listened silently.

"Margaret refused. She said the council would consider them threats to the succession. Your father argued with her. The argument lasted for hours.""

Eleanor began crying.

"Then, one night, he came to me.""

"What did he say?"" Adrian asked.

"He told me that the children had disappeared. He said Margaret had taken them. He begged me to help him find them.""

Elia leaned forward.

"Did you?""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"No.""

The word was barely audible.

"I was furious. I told him that if he wanted to protect another woman's children, he could leave the palace and join them.""

Adrian stared at his mother.

"Mother...""

"I was cruel.""

Eleanor's tears ran freely.

"I thought I was defending my marriage. I didn't understand what Margaret had planned.""

Elia remained silent.

Then Eleanor reached toward the portrait.

"Your father came to me again on the night he died.""

Adrian's face tightened.

"What happened?""

"He had discovered the poison.""

The prince stood.

"What?""

"He showed me the medical reports. He said someone had been giving him medication that was slowly destroying his heart.""

"Did he name the person?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Margaret.""

Adrian closed his eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because he made me promise to protect you.""

"Protect me from what?""

"From learning that your grandmother had arranged your father's death.""

Adrian turned away.

For the first time, he looked less like a prince and more like a son who had just lost his childhood.

Elia gently touched the queen's hand.

"Why did the letter carry your signature?""

Eleanor looked at her.

"Because Margaret once stole my personal seal. She used it to authorize several medical treatments without my knowledge.""

"But you knew?""

"Only after the king died. I confronted her. She told me that if I ever revealed the truth, she would destroy Adrian's position and expose every secret in the family.""

Adrian turned.

"So you stayed silent for twenty-two years?""

Eleanor nodded.

"I thought I had no choice.""

A long silence followed.

Then Elia asked a question that had been troubling her.

"Did you ever see my mother again?""

Eleanor shook her head.

"Never.""

"Did you want to?""

The queen looked at the young woman.

"I wanted to hate her. But I never stopped wondering whether she had held you close before they took you away.""

Elia's eyes filled.

"She did.""

Eleanor began to cry harder.

"How do you know?""

"Mrs. Brooks kept a photograph.""

Elia reached into her pocket and removed the picture of Evelyn holding the newborn baby.

The queen took it.

She stared at the woman's face.

Then she traced the baby's blanket with her finger.

"She looks so peaceful.""

"That's what Mrs. Brooks said.""

The queen pressed the photograph against her chest.

"I am sorry.""

Elia looked at her.

"For what?""

"For allowing someone else to decide what happened to you.""

Meanwhile, downstairs, Thomas stood in the old royal nursery.

The room had been closed for years.

Dust covered the wooden crib. The golden curtains were faded, and several paintings had been removed from the walls.

Mr. Whitmore stood beside him.

"Your father spent his final evening here," the old official said.

Thomas looked around.

"Why?""

"He believed the truth about the twins was hidden somewhere in this room.""

Thomas approached the crib.

A small silver star had been carved into the wood.

He ran his fingers over it.

"Is this where I was born?""

"No. This is where your father used to visit you.""

Thomas looked at him.

"You knew him?""

"I served him for thirty-two years.""

"Was he a good man?""

Whitmore considered the question.

"He made mistakes. Terrible ones. But he loved his children.""

Thomas turned toward the windows.

"Then why didn't he take us away?""

"Because he was already being watched.""

Whitmore opened a small wooden cabinet.

Inside lay several old nursery toys.

He removed a carved wooden horse.

"Your father gave you this.""

Thomas examined it.

There was a tiny metal compartment beneath the saddle.

He pressed it.

The compartment opened.

A small key fell into his palm.

Whitmore frowned.

"I have never seen that before.""

Thomas looked at him.

"Where would it fit?""

The old official slowly turned toward the wall.

There was a narrow silver lock beneath the royal family portrait.

Thomas inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small audio recorder and a sealed document.

Whitmore picked up the paper.

His expression changed.

"It's a statement from the royal physician.""

Thomas opened the recorder.

The king's voice emerged.

"Edward to the royal council. If anything happens to me, I want the following facts made public.""

The recording crackled.

"Evelyn Brooks gave birth to three children. Serena was born first. My son Nathaniel and daughter Elia followed years later.""

Thomas stared.

The recording continued.

"Queen Eleanor knew that I had fathered children outside our marriage. But she did not know that my mother had arranged to separate them permanently.""

Whitmore looked toward the door.

"Listen.""

The king's voice became quieter.

"Margaret did not act alone. Lord Malvern helped her. But there was a third person. Someone who entered my private chambers with a key only my family possessed.""

Thomas leaned closer.

"Who?""

The recorder clicked.

A second voice answered.

"Your Majesty, the medication is ready.""

Thomas froze.

He recognized that voice.

He had heard it in the palace every day.

It belonged to Lord Pembroke.

The elderly councilman who had publicly questioned Margaret's authority.

Thomas replayed the recording.

Then he looked at Whitmore.

"Why would Lord Pembroke help kill the king?""

Whitmore took the document.

A name appeared at the bottom.

*DR. HENRY PEMBROKE — ROYAL PHYSICIAN.*

Thomas stared.

"That's not Lord Pembroke.""

Whitmore nodded slowly.

"His father.""

"Where is he now?""

"Dead.""

Thomas opened the sealed physician's statement.

Inside was a second page.

It contained the name of the person who had received the poison before it reached the king.

A woman.

Not Margaret.

Not Victoria.

Thomas looked up in disbelief.

"Mr. Whitmore...""

The old official took the page.

His hands began shaking.

The recipient's name was:

*QUEEN ELEANOR.*

Back in the queen's chambers, the door burst open.

Adrian drew himself upright.

"What happened?""

Thomas entered with the document.

"Your Highness, we found another recording.""

Eleanor looked toward him.

"What recording?""

Thomas placed the paper on the table.

"It concerns the king's medication.""

The queen examined it.

Her face went white.

"No.""

Adrian looked at the signature.

"Mother?""

Eleanor shook her head.

"I never received any medication.""

Thomas spoke carefully.

"According to the physician's statement, the poison was first delivered to your chambers.""

The queen stood.

"This is impossible.""

Elia looked toward her.

"Your Majesty, did anyone bring medicine to you that night?""

Eleanor slowly remembered.

A silver tray.

A small glass bottle.

A servant who had approached her while she was changing for dinner.

The queen covered her mouth.

"Someone gave me a glass of water.""

Adrian stepped closer.

"Who?""

Eleanor looked at him.

"Victoria.""

Adrian's expression changed.

"Victoria brought you something?""

"She said it was a calming tonic. She told me your father had requested it.""

Thomas looked at the paper again.

"Then she may have delivered the poison.""

Elia stood.

"Where is she?""

Adrian looked toward the guards.

"Find Lady Victoria.""

A moment later, a palace officer entered.

"Your Highness, Lady Victoria is missing.""

"Since when?""

"She left the royal guest chambers approximately twenty minutes ago.""

Adrian grabbed his sword.

"Search the palace.""

The officer hesitated.

"There is one more thing.""

"What?""

"We found a message in her room.""

He handed over a small envelope.

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Queen Eleanor, taken that very morning.

Beneath it were six words.

*THE QUEEN KNOWS WHAT SHE DID.*

Elia stared.

Then the officer added:

"Lady Victoria also took the original succession document.""

Adrian turned toward the window.

Outside, a black car was speeding through the palace gates.

And seated in the back was Lady Victoria.

Holding a small velvet case.

May you like

Inside the case was the second royal bracelet.

The one Margaret had spent twenty-two years hiding.
