Chapter 6: The Woman Who Chose Which Daughter Stayed

By noon, Adrian had not slept.

He sat in a private consultation room at the hospital while Margaret Ellis reviewed the documents spread across the table. Claire stood by the window, staring at the rain-soaked parking lot.

On the other side of the building, Lily was waiting with a child-protection specialist. Emma was resting after her medical assessment.

For the first time in eight years, Adrian knew the names of both his daughters.

But he still didn't know why one had been raised in a mansion while the other had spent seven nights locked in a basement.

Margaret placed the transfer authorization beside the birth report.

“The signature appears consistent with Vanessa's known signature,” she said.

“That doesn't prove she committed a crime, but it gives investigators a concrete lead.””

“Why would a hospital allow a temporary administrative employee to become a guardian?””

“It wouldn't ordinarily happen that way. We need the complete record, including any court orders or emergency custody documents.””

Adrian rubbed his face.

“Could she have taken Emma without permission?””

“Possibly. Or someone may have arranged a transfer that was later misrepresented. We cannot conclude which without further evidence.””

He stared at the name on the form.

Vanessa Reed.

He had married a woman who had spent years telling him that she wanted to build a family with him.

Now he was learning that she might have been involved in separating his newborn daughters before he even knew there were two.

“Why me?”” he asked quietly.

Margaret looked up.

“What do you mean?””

“Why did she marry me? Was it because of money? Because of Eleanor? Because she wanted access to Lily?””

“We'll need to examine the timeline.””

Adrian opened his laptop and brought up his financial records.

“There were two payments. One to the hospital foundation and one to a company connected to Vanessa. I want to know whether anyone used my company or family trust to fund this.””

Margaret nodded.

“Send me everything. I'll coordinate with the forensic accountant.””

He forwarded the records.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

*You need to stop. You have no idea what Eleanor was capable of.*

A second message arrived before he could respond.

*If you love your daughters, don't let Claire tell you the whole story.*

Adrian stared at the screen.

He didn't answer.

Instead, he saved the messages and passed the phone to Margaret.

“Add those to the evidence.””

“Good.””

A knock interrupted them.

Officer Daniels entered carrying a folder.

“We've obtained preliminary information from the hospital,” he said.

“The transfer authorization was entered into the system at 11:18 p.m. on the night the twins were born. At 11:42 p.m., a correction was submitted. At 12:06 a.m., the second infant was transferred to a different ward.””

“Who authorized the transfer?”” Adrian asked.

“The record names Vanessa Reed as the person who submitted the request. But the approval was signed by a physician.””

“Whitmore?””

“Yes.””

Claire turned from the window.

“Then Vanessa couldn't have done it alone.””

“That's one possibility,” Daniels replied.

“We are still gathering evidence.””

Adrian leaned forward.

“Where did Emma go after the transfer?””

“We're tracing that now. The hospital has an address attached to the discharge record, but it appears to have been changed more than once.””

Margaret studied the paperwork.

“Was the second infant legally adopted?””

“We haven't found a valid adoption order yet.””

The words settled heavily in the room.

If no valid adoption had occurred, Emma might have been raised under an identity that was never legally hers.

Adrian looked at the officer.

“Who raised her?””

Daniels opened the folder.

“The earliest address belongs to a woman named Patricia Reed. She was Vanessa's mother.””

Claire gasped.

Adrian felt a sharp chill.

“Vanessa's mother?””

“Yes. Patricia Reed died six years ago. We're trying to locate other relatives and determine who had custody of Emma after that.””

Adrian stared at the photograph of the two newborns.

Vanessa had not simply hidden a child in a basement.

The records suggested a chain of decisions extending across years, involving people who might have known exactly what had happened.

“Why would Vanessa bring Emma into this house now?”” he asked.

Officer Daniels didn't pretend to know.

“We're looking into that.””

After the officer left, Adrian went to find Lily.

She sat in a quiet playroom, coloring a picture of a house with three people standing in front of it.

She had drawn herself in yellow, Adrian in blue, and a smaller figure in pink.

“Is that Emma?”” he asked.

Lily nodded.

“She's my sister, right?””

“We believe she is.””

Lily colored the little figure's shoes carefully.

“Does that mean she's going to live with us?””

“If it's safe and the arrangements can be made properly.””

“Will she get my bedroom?””

Adrian crouched beside her.

“No. Your bedroom is yours. We'll make sure Emma has her own space too.””

Lily seemed relieved.

Then her expression grew serious.

“Daddy, I think I remember something.””

Adrian set the crayons aside.

“What is it?””

“When I was little, Vanessa used to make me stand in front of a mirror.””

“Why?””

“She said I had to practice smiling like a good girl.””

Adrian's stomach tightened.

“What else did she say?””

Lily looked at the drawing.

“She told me that if I ever met a little girl who looked like me, I had to pretend I didn't know her.””

Adrian felt his blood turn cold.

“Did she say why?””

Lily shook her head.

“She said it was a game. But she made me promise.””

He reached for her hand.

“You don't have to keep that promise anymore.””

Lily looked up.

“Really?””

“Really.””

She leaned into him.

“I'm glad you came home early.””

Adrian held her close.

“So am I, sweetheart.””

When he returned to the consultation room, Margaret was speaking on the phone with the hospital's legal department. She ended the call and looked at him.

“They've located an additional document.””

“What is it?””

“A handwritten statement from Eleanor, dated two days before her death. It was stored in a restricted file that was never scanned into the electronic record.””

Adrian's chest tightened.

“Can I see it?””

Margaret passed him a digital copy.

Eleanor's handwriting was faint, but the words were clear.

I know both girls survived.

Vanessa told me she could help me correct the records. She promised me that if I signed the guardianship papers, both children would remain safe until Adrian was ready to care for them.

I signed because I was dying, and I believed her.

Adrian stopped reading.

He felt as though someone had reached inside his chest and squeezed his heart.

Eleanor had known.

She had known that both girls were alive.

She had believed Vanessa would protect them.

The statement continued.

I have since discovered that the documents do not say what Vanessa promised. One child is recorded as ours. The other is recorded as the child of Patricia Reed.

I am too weak to fight this alone.

If Adrian ever reads this, tell him I did not abandon either of my daughters.

Adrian pressed a hand over his mouth.

Claire began to cry quietly.

“Eleanor tried to fix it,” she whispered.

He nodded, unable to speak.

The last paragraph contained a date and a reference number for a sealed attachment.

Margaret enlarged the image.

“There's a note here,” she said.

“It says the attachment was removed from the file by an authorized representative.””

“Who?””

Margaret read the name.

“Vanessa Reed.””

Adrian stood abruptly.

“Where is she now?””

“Adrian,” Margaret cautioned, “you cannot confront her alone. The officers need to handle this properly.””

“I'm not going to hurt her. I want answers.””

“I understand. But if she's involved in a criminal investigation, any contact needs to be handled carefully.””

Adrian paced the room.

He wanted to know why Eleanor had trusted Vanessa. Why she had signed documents while dying. Why Vanessa had kept Emma hidden for years, only to bring her into the mansion when Adrian was away.

Most of all, he wanted to know whether the cruelty Lily had suffered was part of something larger.

Officer Daniels returned an hour later with an update.

Vanessa had agreed to a formal interview with investigators, accompanied by her attorney.

She had also provided a written statement claiming that Emma was the child of a deceased relative and that she had brought her to the mansion only because the girl had nowhere else to go.

But the statement contained a major contradiction.

Vanessa claimed Emma had arrived at the mansion three days earlier.

The security footage showed her entering the basement seven days earlier.

The hospital records suggested she had been connected to Emma since birth.

And the note found in the locked file box indicated that Vanessa had been determined to keep Adrian from discovering the second child.

Margaret reviewed the statement.

“She's building a defense around the idea that she was helping a vulnerable child,” she said.

“The evidence will need to establish whether that explanation is credible.””

Adrian looked at the officer.

“Can she come back to the house?””

“Not while we're establishing the children's safety arrangements. We'll discuss appropriate restrictions with the relevant authorities.””

“Good.””

Adrian had no intention of letting Vanessa near either girl until the situation was properly assessed.

That evening, he returned to the mansion with Lily, accompanied by Claire and a child-protection specialist.

Emma remained at the hospital pending further arrangements.

The dining room had been cleaned, but Adrian could still picture the spilled food on the marble floor.

He had the staff bring a small table into the sunroom, where Lily could eat in peace.

She chose a white plate with blue flowers.

Adrian served her chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans.

Lily stared at the plate for several seconds.

“Can I eat all of this?””

“Of course.””

“What if I don't finish?””

“Then you can stop when you're full.””

She picked up her fork.

A moment later, she began to cry.

Adrian moved beside her.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

“I don't know how to eat without being scared.””

He pulled up a chair and sat beside her.

“Then we can learn together.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Will you sit with me?””

“Every time you want me to.””

Lily took a small bite.

Then another.

Gradually, her shoulders relaxed.

Adrian remained beside her until she finished, and when she asked for dessert, he brought her a bowl of strawberries and vanilla ice cream.

For the first time in days, she laughed.

It was a tiny sound, but Adrian felt grateful for it.

Later, after Lily had gone upstairs with Claire, he returned to his study to review the remaining documents.

A new email waited in his inbox.

It came from an address he didn't recognize.

The subject line read:

*You deserve to know what Vanessa did to Eleanor.*

Adrian opened it.

There was no greeting, only a scanned document attached to the message.

The document was a signed confession, dated six years earlier.

It bore Vanessa's name.

At the top, a typed statement read:

I acknowledge that I knowingly withheld information concerning the identity and whereabouts of Emma Cole from Adrian Cole.

Below it was another sentence.

I acted at the request of Patricia Reed and Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

Adrian's hands began to shake.

He scrolled down.

The final paragraph was short.

I did not intend to harm either child. I believed that keeping Emma away from Adrian would preserve the arrangement that had been made before Eleanor's death.

Then came a handwritten addition in the margin.

*But I was not the person who decided which baby would go home with Eleanor.*

Adrian stared at the sentence.

If Vanessa hadn't made that decision, who had?

He enlarged the bottom of the page.

A second signature appeared beneath the first.

It belonged to Patricia Reed.

And beside it was a date.

The date was six months before Adrian had ever met Vanessa.

He sat motionless in the study, listening to the house settle around him.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID showed a private number.

Adrian answered.

A man's voice spoke quietly.

“Mr. Cole, my name is Samuel Whitmore. I've been waiting eight years to speak to you.””

Adrian gripped the phone.

“Why?””

“Because the truth about your daughters is worse than you think.””

“Then tell me.””

There was a long pause.

Finally, the doctor whispered, “The hospital didn't switch your babies by accident.””

Adrian's blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?””

Whitmore exhaled shakily.

“Someone paid us to make sure the wrong child went home with Eleanor.””

Adrian stood so abruptly that his chair crashed backward.

“Who?””

The doctor hesitated.

May you like

Then he said a name that Adrian had never expected to hear.

“Your first wife's father.””
