Chapter 1: The Woman Everyone Blamed

“DADDY! HELP ME!””

The scream tore through the wedding music.

On the rooftop terrace of the luxurious Sterling Hotel, dozens of guests turned toward the low stone parapet overlooking the city.

A little girl was hanging over the edge.

Her tiny fingers clung desperately to the decorative ledge. Her white flower-girl dress fluttered in the wind, and one of her pink shoes had already disappeared into the darkness below.

Standing just a few feet away was Victoria Sterling.

The bride.

Her diamond earrings glittered beneath the chandeliers as she looked down at the terrified child.

Then she took one step backward.

And smiled.

Nobody saw it.

Nobody except Jada.

“Lily!””

Jada dropped the silver serving tray in her hands.

Champagne glasses shattered across the marble floor.

She ran.

Her black server's uniform caught against a chair as she pushed past a group of guests. Someone shouted for her to stop. Someone else screamed.

But Jada heard only the little girl's desperate cries.

“PLEASE! SOMEBODY!””

Jada reached the parapet just as Lily's right hand slipped.

She threw herself onto her stomach and grabbed the child's wrist.

“Hold on, sweetheart! Don't let go!””

Lily sobbed uncontrollably.

“I CAN'T!””

“Yes, you can! Look at me! Look at my face!””

Jada tightened her grip.

The stone edge cut into her forearm. Her shoes slid against the polished floor. For one horrifying second, she felt Lily's weight pulling her forward.

Then she hooked her other arm around the girl's waist.

“HELP ME!”” Jada screamed.

A few guests finally rushed toward them.

But before anyone could reach her, Jada summoned every ounce of strength she had and pulled.

Lily came over the parapet.

Both of them crashed onto the terrace.

Jada landed hard on her shoulder, while Lily fell against her chest.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Lily began to cry.

Jada wrapped both arms around her.

“It's okay. It's okay, baby. You're safe.””

The little girl buried her face in Jada's uniform.

“I was scared.””

“I know.””

“I'm sorry.””

Jada pulled back, confused.

“Why are you apologizing? You didn't do anything wrong.””

Lily opened her mouth, but a furious voice cut through the gathering crowd.

“WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?””

A tall man in a black tuxedo came running toward them.

Nathan Sterling.

The groom.

He was handsome in the polished, expensive way of men whose lives had always been arranged for them. His dark hair was perfectly styled, his bow tie slightly loosened, and his wedding band had not yet been placed on his finger.

He was supposed to be celebrating the happiest day of his life.

Instead, he saw his little girl crying in the arms of a stranger.

“Lily!””

He dropped to his knees.

“Sweetheart! What happened?””

Lily clutched Jada's sleeve.

Nathan tried to lift her, but she screamed when he touched her arm.

“Don't! Don't!””

Nathan froze.

“Baby, it's Daddy. I'm here.””

He looked at Jada.

His expression changed.

“What did you do to her?””

Jada stared at him.

“What?””

“I asked you what you did to my daughter!””

“Nothing! She was hanging over the edge. I pulled her back!””

Nathan glanced at the broken champagne glasses, the scattered chairs, and the guests crowding around them.

He saw Jada's torn sleeve and blood running down her forearm.

But he didn't see the truth.

He saw a frightened child in a stranger's arms.

And he saw a stranger trying to explain herself.

“Get away from her,” he ordered.

Jada carefully released Lily.

“Please, sir. She's hurt. You need to have someone check her wrist.””

Nathan pulled Lily against his chest.

“Don't tell me what my daughter needs.””

“I'm trying to help!””

“Security!””

Two hotel security guards hurried toward them.

But before either could speak, Victoria appeared.

She moved through the crowd with one hand pressed dramatically against her chest. Her wedding gown shimmered beneath the rooftop lights, and her veil trailed behind her.

“Oh, Nathan!””

She rushed to his side.

“Thank God you're here!””

Nathan looked up.

“Victoria, what happened?””

Victoria pointed at Jada.

“THAT WOMAN!””

Her voice cracked as she pretended to struggle for breath.

“SHE PUSHED LILY! I SAW EVERYTHING!””

The terrace went silent.

Jada felt as though someone had poured ice water down her back.

“What?””

Victoria stepped closer, tears gathering in her eyes.

“She was standing right behind Lily. I saw her shove her toward the edge!””

“That is a lie!”” Jada shouted.

Victoria shook her head, playing the part of a horrified bride.

“I tried to stop her, Nathan. I swear I did. But she pushed Lily before I could reach them!””

Jada looked around.

Nobody spoke.

Some guests lowered their eyes. Others whispered behind their hands.

A woman near the bar murmured, “How could anyone do that to a child?””

Jada stepped forward.

“Listen to me. I was carrying drinks when I saw Victoria standing behind the little girl. Lily was already going over the edge when I reached them!””

Victoria let out a wounded gasp.

“How dare you accuse me?””

“You were standing right there!””

“I was trying to protect her!””

“No, you weren't!””

Nathan slowly stood.

His face was turning red.

“Enough.””

Jada looked directly at him.

“Sir, please. Your daughter can tell you what happened.””

Nathan glanced down at Lily.

The child was trembling against his chest.

“Sweetheart, did this woman hurt you?””

Lily's little fingers tightened around his lapel.

Jada held her breath.

For one second, she thought the girl would tell the truth.

Instead, Victoria leaned toward Lily and whispered something Jada couldn't hear.

The little girl flinched.

Nathan noticed.

“What did you say to her?”” he demanded.

Victoria blinked.

“Nothing. I'm just trying to comfort her.””

Jada stepped forward.

“Don't let her put words in that child's mouth!””

Nathan's eyes flashed.

“Watch your mouth.””

“I'm telling you the truth!””

“You expect me to believe that you just happened to be there?””

“Yes!””

“And you expect me to believe my fiancée pushed my daughter?””

Jada stared at him.

“Your fiancée is lying.””

The next moment happened so quickly that Jada barely saw it coming.

Nathan raised his hand.

The slap cracked across the terrace.

Jada's head snapped sideways.

Her cheek burned instantly.

A collective gasp rose from the guests.

Her hand slowly moved to her face.

For a few seconds, she couldn't hear anything except the ringing in her ears.

Nathan stood over her, breathing heavily.

“Don't you ever accuse Victoria again.””

Jada looked at him.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she couldn't believe a man could watch someone save his child and still strike her without asking a single question.

Victoria lowered her face.

But Jada caught the tiny smile that appeared at the corner of her mouth.

That smile told her everything.

Victoria wasn't frightened.

She was pleased.

Jada straightened.

Blood from her injured arm dripped onto the white marble.

“You just hit the person who saved your daughter.””

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“Security, take her downstairs.””

Jada shook her head.

“No. Not until you hear what Lily has to say.””

Victoria immediately stepped between them.

“Don't traumatize her any further!””

Jada looked at the little girl.

“Sweetheart, tell your daddy what happened. You don't have to be scared.””

Lily slowly lifted her face.

Her cheeks were wet.

Her lower lip trembled.

Then she looked straight at Jada.

And whispered something that made Nathan's expression change.

“Daddy…”

“Yes, baby?””

Lily pointed a tiny finger toward Victoria.

“SHE TRIED TO KILL ME!””

May you like

Victoria's face went completely white.

And for the first time that evening, the bride had nothing to say.
