Chapter 5: The Man Behind My Father’s Fall
The name on the document felt like a ghost reaching out from the past.
I stared at the signature until the letters blurred.
Richard Vale.
The man who had been my father’s closest business partner.
The man my mother always described as a family friend.
The man who attended my father’s funeral and placed a hand on my shoulder while telling me, “Your father would want you to be strong.””
I remembered that moment.
I remembered believing him.
Now, standing inside the mansion where my father’s truth had been buried, I realized I had been surrounded by lies for years.
“Richard Vale?”” Alexander asked quietly.
His expression changed the moment he saw the name.
“You know him,” I whispered.
Alexander looked at the document again.
“Yes.””
The room fell silent.
My mother looked between us.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Nobody answered her.
She stepped closer.
“Richard had nothing to do with Daniel’s death.””
Alexander’s eyes moved to her.
“I never said he did.””
Her face tightened.
But that reaction was enough.
She had revealed more than she intended.
“You’re defending him very quickly,” Alexander said.
My mother crossed her arms.
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“No,” Alexander replied calmly.
“You’re telling me the version of the truth you need me to believe.””
For once, my mother had no response.
I looked at the letter again.
My father’s handwriting.
His warnings.
His fear.
My chest tightened.
“Who was Richard Vale?””
Alexander looked at me.
“Your father’s partner.””
“I know that.””
“No, Emma. You know what people told you.””
He placed the document on the table.
“Richard was brilliant. Charming. Everyone trusted him.””
A bitter expression crossed his face.
“That was his greatest weapon.””
My mother suddenly walked toward the fireplace.
“This is ridiculous. Daniel was emotional. He made enemies everywhere.””
I looked at her.
“Enemies?””
She froze.
“Yes.””
“You always told me Dad failed.””
Her lips parted.
“I said he struggled.””
“No.””
My voice grew stronger.
“You said he left us with nothing.””
The words hung in the air.
My mother looked away.
Alexander watched her carefully.
“Because she needed you to believe that.””
My hands curled into fists.
All those years.
All those moments when I felt ashamed of my father.
When I wondered why he didn’t leave us more.
Why he couldn’t protect us.
And the entire time…
Someone had stolen the truth.
A security guard entered the room.
“Mr. Hayes, we found another document hidden inside the box.””
Alexander turned.
“What kind?””
The guard handed him a folded paper.
Alexander opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked at me.
“Emma, your father wrote a second letter.””
My heart stopped.
“To me?””
He nodded.
I reached for it.
But Alexander hesitated.
“There’s something you should know first.””
“What?””
His expression was serious.
“This letter was sealed twelve years ago.””
I frowned.
“Then why wasn’t it opened?””
Alexander looked toward my mother.
“Because someone tried to destroy it.””
Everyone turned.
My mother’s face went pale.
“That’s a lie.””
Alexander held up the letter.
“The seal was damaged. Someone opened it and resealed it.””
My mother’s voice became sharper.
“You’re accusing me?””
“I’m asking a question.””
“No, you’re judging me.””
Alexander didn’t react.
“Did you open this letter?””
Silence.
My mother looked away.
That was the answer.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because I was surprised.
Because a small part of me still wanted her to deny everything.
To prove she was the mother I had hoped she was.
But she couldn’t.
“Why?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
For a moment, I saw something almost like sadness.
Then it disappeared.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed quietly.
“Protect me from what?””
She didn’t answer.
Alexander opened the letter.
Inside was a single page.
He read silently.
Then his expression changed.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He handed it to me.
The first sentence made my breath disappear.
“Emma, if you are reading this, Richard Vale has already made his move.””
I continued.
“My greatest fear was never losing my company. It was losing my daughter’s future.””
My vision blurred.
“I discovered Richard was moving assets behind my back. But I could not prove everything before it was too late.””
I looked at Alexander.
He was reading along.
“My wife Victoria knows more than she admits.””
My fingers went cold.
The next sentence felt like a knife.
“I do not know if Victoria helped him willingly or if she was manipulated. But I know one thing: never trust anyone who benefits from making Emma feel powerless.””
The letter shook in my hands.
My mother whispered:
“Daniel was wrong.””
I looked at her.
“Was he?””
She looked angry now.
Not guilty.
Angry.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Alexander stepped forward.
“Where is Richard Vale now?””
My mother’s eyes flickered.
Again.
A tiny reaction.
But we saw it.
“You know where he is,” Alexander said.
“No.””
“Victoria.””
She looked away.
That was all the confirmation we needed.
Alexander turned to his security team.
“Find Richard Vale.””
My mother suddenly panicked.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She swallowed.
“He won’t help you.””
Alexander’s voice was cold.
“Why?””
Because she was finally afraid.
“He knows what happened.””
“What happened?”” I asked.
My mother stared at me.
And then she said the sentence that changed everything.
“Your father didn’t die because of an accident.””
The room went silent.
My heartbeat stopped.
“What did you say?””
My mother’s eyes filled with fear.
“I didn’t mean—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You said my father didn’t die in an accident.””
She looked away.
Alexander’s voice became dangerous.
“Explain.””
My mother shook her head.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
May you like
Because then she whispered:
“Because Richard Vale was there the night Daniel died.””
