Chapter 6: The Night My Father Disappeared

I couldn’t hear anything after that.

Not the ocean outside.

Not the voices around me.

Not even my own breathing.

My entire childhood had been built around one sentence.

Your father had an accident.

A simple explanation.

A painful explanation.

But an explanation.

Now my mother had ripped it away.

“You knew?”” I whispered.

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew?””

Victoria looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Something inside her had changed.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect image was gone.

“I knew something wasn’t right.””

Alexander stared at her.

“Something?””

She looked at him.

“You weren’t there.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“But Emma was.””

My mother flinched.

That was the first time I saw guilt on her face.

I remembered the night my father died.

The rain.

The flashing lights.

My mother crying.

Everyone telling me to stay upstairs.

I remembered asking where Dad was.

And my mother saying:

“He’s gone.””

Not “he passed away.””

Not “there was an accident.””

Just gone.

I never noticed that before.

Until now.

“Tell me what happened,” I said.

My mother sat down.

For the first time in my life, she looked defeated.

“Your father discovered something.””

“Richard.””

She nodded.

“He found out Richard was stealing from the company.””

Alexander clenched his jaw.

“My father suspected it.””

Victoria looked at him.

“Daniel wanted proof before accusing him.””

“Of course he did,” Alexander said quietly.

That sounded exactly like my father.

Careful.

Fair.

Too kind for people who weren’t.

“He confronted Richard that night,” my mother continued.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You were scared?””

“Yes.””

“For who?””

She looked at me.

And I hated that part of me still wanted to hear the answer.

“For you.””

The words should have comforted me.

They didn’t.

“Then why did you treat me like I meant nothing?””

My mother looked down.

Because she had no answer.

Alexander walked closer.

“What happened after Richard met Daniel?””

My mother swallowed.

“They argued.””

“About?””

“The company. The money. The documents.””

“What documents?””

She hesitated.

“The ownership papers.””

My father’s inheritance.

The papers that could change everything.

“Richard wanted Daniel to sign them over.””

Alexander’s expression darkened.

“And Daniel refused.””

“Yes.””

The room was quiet.

Then I asked:

“What happened to Richard?””

My mother looked toward the window.

“He left.””

“When?””

“The same night.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“And Dad?””

She closed her eyes.

“I found him later.””

Nobody spoke.

I waited.

But the next words never came.

Because my mother started crying.

Not the dramatic crying she used when guests were around.

Real crying.

The kind that looked painful.

“He was alive,” she whispered.

My body froze.

“What?””

Alexander stepped forward.

“Victoria.””

“He was alive when I found him.””

The world tilted.

My father.

Alive.

After the accident.

After the crash.

After everything.

“What happened?””

My mother covered her face.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I called for help.””

“Then why did everyone say he died immediately?””

She looked at me.

And I saw the answer before she said it.

“Because someone changed the story.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

My mother looked terrified.

“Richard.””

Alexander immediately turned to his guard.

“Locate him now.””

The guard nodded and left.

I stood there unable to move.

My father had known.

He had fought.

He had tried to protect me.

And everyone had let me believe he failed.

Then my mother said something even worse.

“Emma.””

I looked at her.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

She wiped her tears.

“The night your father died… he gave me something.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“A key.””

Alexander looked at her sharply.

“A key to what?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying,” Alexander said.

She looked at him.

“I never found out what it opened.””

“Where is it?””

My mother’s silence was terrifying.

“Victoria.””

Finally, she whispered:

“I gave it to Richard.””

The room went silent again.

I felt sick.

She gave him the key.

The same man my father feared.

The same man who had been hiding the truth.

“Why?””

My mother looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw the real reason behind everything.

“I thought Richard would protect us.””

Alexander’s face hardened.

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He destroyed everything.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Everyone turned.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

My hands trembled as I answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

An older man.

A voice I had not heard in twelve years.

A voice that made my knees weaken.

“Emma?””

I stopped breathing.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

May you like

Then the man whispered:

“It’s your father.””
