Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Blue Photograph

The old garage was burning when they arrived.

Flames climbed through the broken windows, turning the evening sky orange. Thick black smoke rolled above the roof.

Several firefighters were already on the scene.

Jace slammed his truck into park.

“Emily, stay here!””

But she was already opening the door.

“That's where Dad's evidence is!””

“There's a fire!””

“I don't care!””

Jace grabbed her shoulders.

“Listen to me. Your father would never forgive me if I let you get hurt.””

Emily stared at him.

“Then help me save what he left.””

For a moment, Jace said nothing.

Then he nodded toward Ray.

“Get the firefighters. Tell them there's a storage room at the rear.””

Ray ran toward the emergency vehicles.

Jace took Emily around the side of the building.

The old garage looked smaller than she had imagined. Its brick walls were blackened, and the faded sign above the entrance was barely visible.

*CARTER MOTOR REPAIR.*

Emily stopped.

“My father's name.””

Jace nodded.

“He built this place with his own hands.””

A firefighter approached them.

“You can't go inside.””

Jace held up his hands.

“We're not trying to interfere. There may be documents in the rear office.””

“It's too dangerous.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Please. My father died here eleven years ago. I just need to know what happened.””

The firefighter looked at her burgundy graduation gown beneath her jacket.

His expression softened.

“Stay behind the tape. We'll see what we can recover.””

Emily nodded reluctantly.

For the next forty minutes, she stood outside watching strangers fight to save the place where her father had spent much of his life.

Jace remained beside her.

Neither spoke.

Finally, Ray returned.

“Fire chief says the office is mostly intact.””

Jace looked at him.

“Anything else?””

Ray lowered his voice.

“They found a broken window at the back. Someone poured gasoline inside.””

Emily turned sharply.

“So Richard did this.””

Ray nodded.

“Looks that way.””

Jace's face hardened.

“Did they find anyone?””

“No. But the security camera across the road caught a vehicle leaving ten minutes before the fire started.””

Emily looked at the flames.

“Could it have been Richard?””

“Possibly.””

A firefighter approached carrying a metal box.

“Are you Daniel Carter's family?””

Emily stepped forward.

“I am his daughter.””

He placed the box on a table.

“We recovered this from the rear office. It was inside a locked cabinet.””

Emily stared at it.

A small blue ribbon was tied around the handle.

Her father had always used blue ribbon to mark important documents.

She touched it carefully.

“Can I open it?””

The firefighter nodded.

Jace stood beside her as she lifted the lid.

Inside were several old photographs, a notebook, a small velvet pouch, and a blue leather-bound ledger.

Emily's breath caught.

“The ledger.””

Jace looked at Ray.

Neither man spoke.

Emily opened it.

The first pages contained names, dates, and financial transactions.

She recognized Richard Hayes's name immediately.

Beside it were transfers totaling millions of dollars.

Some were marked with initials.

Others had handwritten notes.

Then she found something that made her stop.

A page dated two weeks before her father's death.

At the top, Daniel had written:

*THE TRUST.*

Beneath it were three names.

Jace Miller.

Victoria Carter.

And a third name.

*LILY CARTER.*

Emily looked up.

“Who's Lily?””

Jace slowly closed his eyes.

Ray lowered his head.

Emily's heartbeat quickened.

“Jace?””

He pulled out the photograph she had shown him earlier.

The little girl standing beside her father.

“Her name was Lily,” he said.

Emily stared at him.

“Was?””

Jace took a breath.

“Lily was your half-sister.””

The words seemed to echo through the garage.

Emily shook her head.

“No. I don't have a sister.””

“You did.””

“Where is she?””

Jace looked at the photograph.

“That's what we never found out.””

Emily's eyes filled.

“What do you mean?””

“Your father had a daughter before he met your mother. Her mother died when Lily was very young. Daniel raised her for a few years.””

Emily stared at the photograph.

The little girl wore a blue dress and held a stuffed rabbit.

She looked about five years old.

“Why didn't Dad ever tell me?””

“He wanted to. But Lily disappeared.””

“Disappeared?””

Jace nodded.

“Her mother had family who wanted custody. There was a legal dispute. Daniel eventually lost contact with her.””

Emily looked at the ledger again.

“Then why is her name here?””

Jace pointed to a section near the back.

“Because your father never stopped looking.””

Emily turned the pages.

There were payments to private investigators, addresses, and handwritten notes.

The last entry was dated three days before the accident.

Found her. Need to tell Emily. Need to tell Jace. Richard must not know.

Emily looked up.

“Dad found her?””

Jace nodded.

“He told me he had something important to share. I thought it was about Richard. I never knew it was Lily.””

Emily felt tears spill down her cheeks.

“He had another daughter, and he never got to tell me.””

Jace touched her shoulder.

“He wanted you two to meet.””

Emily looked at the blue photograph again.

“Who sent me that message?””

“I don't know.””

“Could Lily be alive?””

Jace hesitated.

“Your father believed she was.””

Emily looked at him.

“Why didn't you tell me this before?””

“Because I didn't know whether the information was true. We searched for years. Every lead disappeared.””

Ray opened the velvet pouch.

Inside was a small silver locket.

He handed it to Emily.

She opened it.

Two tiny photographs were inside.

One showed her father holding a newborn baby.

The other showed the same little girl from the blue photograph.

On the back, someone had engraved:

*TO MY TWO GIRLS. ALWAYS FAMILY.*

Emily pressed the locket against her chest.

Her father had left her more than money.

He had left her a sister.

A sister who might still be alive.

Suddenly, a firefighter approached.

“We need to clear this area. The roof is unstable.””

Jace nodded.

He gathered the ledger and documents.

But Emily noticed something beneath the box.

A small cassette tape.

It had a label written in her father's handwriting.

*FOR EMILY AND LILY.*

She picked it up.

“Can we play this?””

Jace looked at the tape.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because if your father recorded it, we should hear it somewhere safe.””

They returned to the truck.

Ray climbed into the SUV behind them.

Jace placed the cassette in an old player he kept in the glove compartment.

The speakers crackled.

Then Daniel Carter's voice filled the vehicle.

“Emily. Lily. If you're listening to this together, then somehow I've managed to get one thing right.””

Emily covered her mouth.

Her father's voice sounded older than she remembered.

Tired.

But happy.

“I've spent years making mistakes. I thought I could protect everyone by keeping secrets. I was wrong.””

A pause.

Then:

“Lily, if you're hearing this, I hope you know I never stopped looking for you. And Emily, your sister has been waiting for you longer than you can imagine.””

Emily began crying.

The recording continued.

“I left both of you something. Not money. Not a house. Something that belongs to you equally.””

Jace glanced at Emily.

“What could that be?””

The tape crackled.

“There's a trust document in the blue ledger. But the real answer is in the final envelope. It was placed with the attorney who helped me establish everything.””

Daniel's voice became serious.

“Don't trust Richard Hayes. Don't trust anyone who tells you Lily is dead. And if Victoria has told you she knows nothing about my other daughter, she's lying.””

Emily looked toward Jace.

The recording ended.

Silence filled the truck.

Then Jace said, “We need to find that attorney.””

Ray nodded.

“I know who he is. Harold Bennett. He retired five years ago.””

Emily wiped her face.

“Can we find him?””

“I can.””

Jace pulled out his phone.

But before he could make the call, his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a number he hadn't seen in eleven years.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice came through.

“Jace Miller?””

He sat upright.

“Who is this?””

“My name is Lily Carter.””

Emily stopped breathing.

Jace looked at her.

“Lily?””

“Yes.””

He closed his eyes.

“Sweetheart, is that really you?””

The woman on the other end began crying.

“I've been trying to find you.””

Jace held the phone out to Emily.

She stared at it.

“Is she...?””

He nodded.

Emily took the phone.

“Hello?””

A quiet breath came through the speaker.

“Emily?””

Emily's lips trembled.

“Who is this?””

“My name is Lily.””

“Are you my sister?””

A pause.

Then the woman whispered:

“Dad told me you would ask that one day.””

Emily pressed the phone against her ear.

“Where are you?””

“I'm in a hospital in Pennsylvania.””

Emily's heart dropped.

“Are you hurt?””

“I'm fine. But there's something you need to know.””

“What?””

Lily began crying harder.

“I was the one who sent you the message.””

Emily looked at Jace.

Lily continued.

“Richard found out I was alive. He came to see me yesterday.””

Emily's blood turned cold.

“What did he want?””

“He wanted the ledger.””

“Why?””

“Because he knows what Dad left us.””

Lily took a shaky breath.

“And Emily... there's something else.””

“What?””

“Dad didn't die because he was going to expose Richard.””

Emily's fingers tightened around the phone.

“Then why?””

May you like

Lily's answer came quietly.

“Because he was trying to save me.””
