Chapter 9: The Last Lie
For two years, I had imagined what I would say if Ethan Vale ever came back.
I imagined anger.
I imagined questions.
I imagined demanding answers from the man whose death had changed my life.
But when he stood in that doorway, alive and breathing, I felt something I never expected.
Nothing.
Not because I didn’t care.
Because my mind couldn’t decide what emotion belonged there.
A dead man had walked back into my life.
And somehow, he still looked exactly like the person I remembered.
Same tired eyes.
Same quiet expression.
Same way of standing like he was carrying a weight nobody else could see.
Except now I knew better.
People could look familiar and still be strangers.
Alvarez kept her weapon raised.
“Don’t move.””
Ethan slowly lifted his hands.
“I’m not here to fight.””
“Funny,” David said from behind me.
“That’s what you always say.””
Ethan looked at him.
And for the first time, his expression changed.
Disappointment.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Disappointment.
“You told him.””
David laughed.
“You mean I told him the truth?””
Ethan stepped into the room.
“No.””
His eyes moved across the files on the table.
“You told him the version that keeps you alive.””
My jaw tightened.
“Enough.””
Both men looked at me.
I pointed between them.
“I am done being the person everyone protects by lying to me.””
The room went quiet.
Good.
For once, everyone was listening.
“Ethan,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Start talking.””
He took a slow breath.
“I knew this day would come.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
He nodded.
“It’s not.””
He looked older than he had that morning.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
Like carrying secrets for too long had finally become heavier than hiding them.
“The operation two years ago was never about stolen evidence.””
I almost laughed.
“We’re back to that?””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“This time I’m telling you the whole thing.””
Alvarez lowered her weapon slightly but didn’t put it away.
Ethan continued.
“There was corruption inside the department. That part was true.””
I looked at David.
Then back at Ethan.
“But?””
“But the people involved weren’t just officers selling information.””
He walked toward the table.
“They were creating cases.””
“Creating?””
“Fabricating evidence. Choosing targets. Destroying people they wanted removed.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“And you found out?””
“I found pieces.””
“And?””
“I made a mistake.””
That caught me off guard.
Ethan Vale admitting a mistake was something I had rarely heard.
“What mistake?””
He looked directly at me.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
David scoffed.
“You’re unbelievable.””
Ethan ignored him.
“I thought Thomas Reed was leading the investigation because he wanted to clean up the department.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Deputy Chief Reed.””
“Yes.””
“He was involved.””
Ethan nodded.
“But not alone.””
A silence followed.
“Who else?””
Ethan looked at me.
And I knew before he said it.
“No.””
His eyes softened.
“Marcus—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
Because I knew what was coming.
And some truths hurt more before they are spoken.
“Your name was never on the list because someone was tracking you.””
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“It was there because someone was protecting you.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“The person who put your name on those files wasn’t your enemy.””
“Then who?””
Ethan looked at David.
David’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
My heart sank.
“No.””
David shook his head.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“You.””
“No.””
“You were the one with access.””
“Because I was trying to find out what happened.””
“After two years?””
His expression broke.
“I couldn’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because I wasn’t sure.””
That answer made me angry.
“You weren’t sure?””
He stepped closer.
“Ethan manipulated everyone.””
Ethan laughed quietly.
A sad sound.
“You still don’t understand.””
David looked at him.
“What?””
Ethan reached into his jacket.
Alvarez immediately raised her weapon.
“Slowly.””
Ethan pulled out a small drive.
He placed it on the table.
“This is why I disappeared.””
Nobody moved.
“What is it?”” I asked.
“The original evidence.””
“From the operation?””
“Yes.””
“Why hide it?””
“Because everyone who tried to expose the truth ended up destroyed.””
I stared at the drive.
“And you?””
“I made them think I was dead.””
David shook his head.
“You staged your own death.””
“Yes.””
“People mourned you.””
Ethan looked away.
“I know.””
The sadness in his voice almost sounded real.
Almost.
And that was the problem.
I no longer knew what was real.
Alvarez picked up the drive.
“We need to verify this.””
Ethan nodded.
“You do.””
She looked at him.
“Why give it to us now?””
Before Ethan could answer, a sound came from outside.
A vehicle.
Then another.
Alvarez looked toward the window.
Her expression changed.
“We have company.””
David moved immediately.
“Who?””
Alvarez looked outside.
“Multiple vehicles.””
Ethan’s face went pale.
“They found us.””
“Who?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“The people who started this.””
The lights outside disappeared.
Someone had blocked the street.
Then the apartment building alarm started.
A fire alarm.
But no smoke.
A distraction.
Ethan grabbed the drive.
I stopped him.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Marcus.””
“You brought us here.””
“Yes.””
“You know who’s coming.””
“Yes.””
“Then you’re staying.””
For a second, neither of us moved.
Then Ethan said something I never expected.
“I was hoping you would say that.””
The hallway outside filled with footsteps.
Not rushed.
Not chaotic.
Organized.
Someone had done this before.
Alvarez checked her weapon.
David moved beside us.
And for the first time that night, the three people who had spent hours accusing each other stood together.
Not because we trusted each other.
Because someone worse was coming.
The door shook.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice came from the other side.
“Marcus Hale.””
I froze.
I knew that voice.
Everyone in the department knew that voice.
The person who had trained me.
The person who had signed my reports.
The person who had told me to trust the badge.
Deputy Chief Thomas Reed spoke through the door.
“Open it.””
Nobody moved.
May you like
Then he added:
“You deserve to know why everyone you trusted betrayed you.””
