Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much

Maya spent the next hour trying to reach Chloe.

Every call went unanswered.

She sent messages, but none were delivered. When she asked hotel security to locate the young assistant, she was told Chloe had left the building shortly after Vanessa.

Eleanor stood beside the window, studying the gardens below.

"Your mother was protecting someone," she repeated.

"That would explain why she never revealed everything she knew.""

Maya paced the room.

"She could have told me. She could have told you.""

"Perhaps she believed telling the truth would endanger someone.""

"Who?""

Eleanor turned from the window.

"That's what we need to discover.""

Daniel opened his briefcase.

"There is one person who might know.""

"Who?"" Maya asked.

"Patricia Whitmore.""

Maya stopped pacing.

"Vanessa's mother?""

"Before she married Richard, Patricia worked as a junior designer for the company. She was present during the original collection dispute.""

Eleanor frowned.

"Patricia left the company before the legal proceedings began.""

"Exactly," Daniel replied.

"And I always wondered why.""

Maya looked at the clock.

"Then we should speak to her.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"Not tonight. Richard will be expecting us to make a move, and Patricia may not be willing to talk.""

"What if she knows the evidence is real and tries to destroy it?""

Daniel closed the briefcase.

"The original documents are secured with my attorneys. We don't need to rush.""

Maya looked down at her mother's sketches.

For twenty years, she had believed the story was simple: Claire had been betrayed by a powerful company, fought a losing battle, and withdrawn from the world.

Now every answer opened another door.

She couldn't bear the thought of waiting another day.

"I'm going to speak to Vanessa.""

Eleanor caught her arm.

"That may be the worst person to approach.""

"Maybe. But Vanessa knows something. I saw her face when Daniel mentioned the original evidence.

She wasn't just angry. She was afraid.""

Eleanor studied Maya for a moment.

"Then don't go alone.""

Vanessa was sitting in the private lounge when Maya found her.

The room was nearly empty, lit by small lamps and the soft glow of a fireplace. Patricia sat at a table with a cup of tea, while Richard paced near the windows, speaking quietly into his phone.

Vanessa had removed her headpiece. Her golden gown was wrinkled, and her makeup had begun to run.

When she saw Maya, she stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.

"Get out.""

Maya closed the door behind her.

"I need to talk to you.""

"I have nothing to say to you.""

"Chloe called me.""

Vanessa went still.

Patricia looked up sharply.

Richard stopped pacing.

"What did she tell you?"" Vanessa demanded.

"That my mother was protecting someone.""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Richard walked toward Maya.

"Whatever Chloe told you, she's mistaken.""

Maya held his gaze.

"Then tell me the truth.""

"There is no truth to tell.""

"Why did your family accuse my mother of stealing her own designs?""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Because the company had legal documentation showing that the designs belonged to us.""

"Daniel has the original contract.""

"Daniel Reeves is a disgruntled former employee.""

"He has a signed letter from you.""

Richard's jaw clenched.

"Those documents prove nothing without context.""

Maya took a step closer.

"Then give me the context.""

He looked toward Patricia.

She was staring at her tea, both hands wrapped around the cup.

Maya noticed the slight tremor in her fingers.

"Mrs. Whitmore?""

Patricia slowly raised her eyes.

"Please," Richard said sharply.

"Don't involve my wife.""

Patricia flinched.

The reaction was small, but Maya saw it.

So did Vanessa.

"Mother?"" Vanessa whispered.

Patricia set down the cup.

"Richard, I think it's time.""

He turned toward her.

"Not another word.""

Patricia rose.

For the first time since Maya had entered the room, she looked directly at her husband without lowering her eyes.

"I have been silent for twenty-two years.""

Richard stepped toward her.

"And that silence protected this family.""

"No," Patricia replied.

"It protected you.""

Vanessa stared at her mother.

"What are you talking about?""

Patricia looked at Maya.

"Your mother and I were friends before Richard and I married.""

Maya's breath caught.

"Friends?""

"Very close friends. Claire was the person who encouraged me to apply for my first design position. She taught me how to draft patterns, how to recognize good fabric, and how to defend my work when people tried to claim it.""

Patricia's voice trembled.

"She was brilliant. Much more talented than I was.""

Maya looked at Richard.

"And you stole her designs?""

Patricia closed her eyes.

"Not exactly.""

Richard slammed his hand against the table.

"Enough!""

Vanessa jumped.

"Father, stop shouting!""

He turned on her.

"Stay out of this.""

"No!"" Vanessa shouted back.

"You've spent the entire evening telling me not to ask questions. I'm asking them now.""

Richard looked at his daughter as though he had never heard her speak to him that way.

Patricia continued.

"The collection was supposed to launch under Claire's name and Eleanor's. But the company was struggling financially, and Richard's father believed the collection would be worth millions if the Whitmore label owned it outright.""

"So he took it?"" Maya asked.

"Yes. But that wasn't the worst part.""

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

"Someone gave him access to Claire's private sketches and helped alter the ownership documents. Someone who knew her work, her techniques, and her signature.""

Maya felt sick.

"Who?""

Patricia looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. Don't look at me like that.""

Patricia's voice broke.

"It was me.""

Silence swallowed the room.

Maya stared at her.

"You stole my mother's designs?""

"I was young. I was frightened. Richard's father promised me a senior design position if I helped prepare the collection files. He said Claire had already agreed to the transfer.""

"Did you believe him?""

Patricia looked away.

"At first.""

"And later?""

Patricia began to cry.

"Later, I realized what I had done. I tried to tell Claire, but Richard's father threatened to expose me as the person who had provided the sketches. He said I would be prosecuted, blacklisted, and ruined.""

Maya's voice shook.

"So you let my mother take the blame.""

"I was a coward.""

Patricia's words were barely audible.

"I told myself I would fix it. I told myself I would speak when the right time came. Then I married Richard, and Vanessa was born, and every year the truth became harder to tell.""

Vanessa sank into a chair.

Her face had gone white.

"Mother, you always told me Claire Bennett had tried to destroy our family.""

Patricia covered her mouth.

"I know.""

"You told me her daughter was raised by a bitter woman who couldn't accept that she had failed.""

"I know.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"You let me believe Maya was beneath us.""

Patricia looked at her daughter.

"I thought if I made you believe our family was innocent, you would never have to live with what I had done.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You didn't protect me. You taught me to be cruel to someone whose life we destroyed.""

Maya felt the room tilt around her.

All her life, she had wondered why her mother had never fought harder, why she had accepted humiliation, why she had sometimes sat awake at night staring at her old sketches.

Now she understood.

Claire had known who betrayed her.

And she had chosen silence because the person responsible had been her friend.

Maya looked at Patricia.

"Did my mother ever forgive you?""

Patricia shook her head.

"She never knew the whole truth. I tried to contact her once, years later, but she returned my letter unopened.""

Maya lowered her eyes.

"She deserved better.""

"Yes," Patricia whispered.

"She did.""

Richard moved toward the door.

"This conversation is over.""

Maya stepped into his path.

"Not for me.""

He glared at her.

"You have your crown. You have your publicity. What more do you want?""

"The truth.""

"The truth is complicated.""

"No. The truth is what happened. The complications are what people invent to avoid admitting it.""

Richard's face reddened.

"You have no idea what you're doing. You think exposing this will make you a hero? It will damage the foundation, cost people their jobs, and destroy the reputation of everyone connected to this family.""

Maya looked at Vanessa.

"Do you believe that?""

Vanessa sat with her hands clasped tightly together.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she stood.

"My mother made a terrible mistake. My father helped hide it. And I used our family's name to make myself feel superior to other people.""

She looked directly at Maya.

"I tripped you tonight because I was afraid you'd win. I wanted you to fall in front of everyone. When you turned it into a beautiful pose, I hated you for it.""

Maya didn't respond.

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"I don't expect you to forgive me.""

"Good," Maya said.

"Because I don't.""

Vanessa flinched.

"But I do expect you to stop lying.""

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"I will.""

Richard stepped between them.

"You're not making any public statements.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"You don't get to decide that anymore.""

He stared at her.

"You are my daughter.""

"And I'm an adult. You taught me that our name mattered more than anything. I believed you. Now I'm telling you that I won't spend the rest of my life protecting a lie.""

She walked to the door.

Maya followed.

Behind them, Patricia began sobbing.

At the threshold, Vanessa stopped.

"There's something else you need to know.""

Maya turned.

Vanessa reached into her purse and removed a small silver key.

"My grandfather kept a private archive in the old Whitmore building. After he died, Father ordered it sealed. I found this key in his desk last year.""

"What is in the archive?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.

"I don't know. But when I asked Father about it, he told me that if anyone ever opened that room, our family would lose everything.""

She placed the key in Maya's palm.

"There's a name engraved on the cabinet inside.""

Maya turned the key over.

A single letter had been etched into the silver.

C.

"Claire?"" she whispered.

Vanessa nodded.

"And beneath her name is another.""

Maya looked up.

May you like

Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Mine.""
