Chapter 7: My Mother’s Final Warning

I read the letter three times.

Still, I couldn’t make the words make sense.

My mother had known.

She had prepared for something like this.

But she had never told my father.

She had never told me.

Why?

David stood silently as I held the paper.

My father looked at him.

“Why did Danielle give this to you?””

David looked uncomfortable.

“Because she didn’t trust anyone else with it.””

That sentence hurt.

My father stepped back.

“You’re saying she didn’t trust me?””

“No.””

David shook his head.

“She trusted you with Jordan.””

He paused.

“But she knew you loved people deeply.””

My father looked confused.

“And?””

“And sometimes love makes people ignore things they don’t want to see.””

Nobody spoke.

Because we all knew exactly what he meant.

My father had ignored Vanessa’s behavior.

Not because he was weak.

Because he wanted his second marriage to work.

He wanted his family to be whole again.

Even if one person was being left behind.

I looked back at the letter.

The handwriting was messy.

My mother had been sick when she wrote it.

Every line carried effort.

Every word felt like she was reaching across time.

I read aloud.

“Jordan, never confuse someone making you uncomfortable with you being unwanted.””

My throat tightened.

Vanessa looked away.

My father closed his eyes.

I continued.

“A person who loves you will never ask you to disappear so they can feel bigger.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Vanessa whispered.

“She hated me.””

My father looked at her.

“No.””

“She wrote that because of me.””

“No,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

“She wrote that because of what happened.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

For the first time, I didn’t want revenge.

I wanted answers.

“What else did she know?””

David looked at the letter.

“There was one more thing.””

My father stared.

“What?””

David took a breath.

“Danielle suspected someone was trying to manipulate the ownership records before she died.””

My blood ran cold.

“Someone?””

David nodded.

“She didn’t know exactly who.””

Vanessa looked nervous.

My father noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Were you involved?””

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

My father stared.

“Then why are you afraid?””

She didn’t respond.

David spoke.

“Because there’s another name.””

He opened the folder.

My father took the page.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What name?””

My father didn’t want to say it.

I could see it.

But finally, he whispered:

“Richard.””

The attorney.

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

David nodded.

“Your mother believed someone inside the legal process was helping move things around.””

My father looked at him.

“You’re saying Richard Hayes?””

“I’m saying Danielle wrote down his name.””

The room went silent.

Because Richard was the person who came with the trust documents.

The person who was supposed to protect us.

The person who knew every secret.

My father grabbed his phone.

“I’m calling him.””

But before he could, his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen showed:

Richard Hayes.

My father answered slowly.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

I couldn’t hear everything.

Only my father’s side.

“Where did you hear that?””

Pause.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Another pause.

His face changed.

Then he looked at me.

“What?””

My father ended the call.

“What did he say?”” I asked.

He looked shaken.

“He said David is lying.””

David stepped back.

“What?””

My father stared at him.

“He said Danielle never gave you any documents.””

David’s face went pale.

“That’s not true.””

My father looked between them.

Someone was lying.

But who?

Then David reached into his pocket.

“I can prove it.””

He pulled out his phone.

Opened an old file.

And handed it to me.

A photo appeared.

A photograph of my mother.

Standing beside David.

But she wasn’t sick.

She wasn’t in a hospital.

She was smiling.

And in her hand was a document.

My father looked at the picture.

May you like

Then whispered something that made everyone freeze.

“That was taken two days after Danielle died.””
