Chapter 4: The Woman at the Airport
Arthur had built his fortune by recognizing danger before it reached his front door.
He had negotiated hostile takeovers, survived business betrayals, and watched powerful men smile while secretly plotting his downfall. But nothing had prepared him for the possibility that his own wife had been hiding the truth about his daughter.
And now Vanessa was running.
“Marcus, I want every available detail about that flight,” Arthur ordered as he strode toward the mansion's garage.
“Passenger manifest, booking records, and whether she checked any luggage.””
“Yes, sir. Our contacts are already looking into it.””
“Don't do anything illegal. I want information, not a scandal.””
Arthur ended the call and turned toward Nia.
She stood beside the black Rolls-Royce, holding a small overnight bag against her chest. Her sweater had been replaced by a navy cardigan, and Mrs. Jenkins had helped her put on clean sneakers. But the fear in her eyes had not disappeared.
“Daddy, are we going to find Vanessa?””
Arthur crouched in front of her.
“We're going to find out why she took your mother's documents. Whatever happens, you will not be alone.””
“Will she come back?””
“I don't know.””
Nia looked down at her shoes.
“Maybe she left because I made her angry.””
Arthur's expression changed.
“No, sweetheart. Adults are responsible for their own choices. You asking for a present did not make Vanessa hurt you. Nothing you did made that acceptable.””
Nia nodded, though she still seemed unconvinced.
Arthur opened the car door for her.
“Let's go.””
As they pulled away, Ava and Caleb appeared at the mansion's front entrance. Ava waved both arms. Caleb held up his red racing car as if offering it to his sister from a distance.
Nia pressed her palm against the window.
Arthur watched her in the rearview mirror.
He had promised Eleanor that he would protect their daughter. Somewhere along the way, he had confused protecting Nia financially with protecting her emotionally.
He would never make that mistake again.
At the airport, Arthur's security team directed him to a private office away from the crowded departure halls. Marcus was already waiting with a laptop open on the desk.
“Sir, Mrs. Carter checked in online under the name Vanessa Whitmore. She has one suitcase and a handbag.””
“Does she have the original birth certificate?””
“We can't confirm that yet. But airport footage shows her carrying the same leather folder she took from the mansion.””
Arthur placed the hospital document on the desk.
“There's another issue. Nia found this in her bedroom.””
Marcus read the circled words.
His eyebrows rose.
“An infant identity discrepancy?””
“Two babies born less than an hour apart. One record sealed at Eleanor's request. And Vanessa's name written on the back.””
Marcus looked at the document again.
“Could she have been involved in the hospital investigation?””
“That's what we're trying to determine.””
A security officer entered.
“Mr. Carter, your wife has been located. She's at Gate B26.””
Arthur stood.
“Has she boarded?””
“Not yet, sir. Boarding begins in approximately twenty minutes.””
Arthur turned toward Nia.
“Stay with Marcus.””
She grabbed his hand.
“Please don't let her disappear.””
Arthur squeezed her fingers.
“I won't let anyone make you feel abandoned again.””
He followed the officer into the terminal.
Vanessa was standing near the gate, wearing dark sunglasses and a camel-colored coat. Her suitcase rested beside her. The leather folder was tucked beneath one arm.
She was speaking rapidly into her phone.
“I told you I have the papers,” she whispered.
“Once I'm in London, you can stop worrying.””
Arthur stopped several feet away.
“Going somewhere, Vanessa?””
She spun around.
For an instant, genuine fear flashed across her face.
Then she smiled.
“Arthur! What a surprise.””
He glanced at her suitcase.
“London?””
“Business.””
“Since when do you conduct business in London?””
“Since I decided I needed a break from this family.””
Arthur stepped closer.
“You took documents from my archive room.””
Vanessa's smile vanished.
“I took nothing that belongs to you.””
“Then show me the folder.””
She tightened her grip on it.
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
“You have no right to interrogate me in public.””
“And you had no right to drag my daughter out of her home.””
A nearby traveler turned to look.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Don't do this here.””
“You chose to leave here.””
She glanced toward the boarding gate.
“Arthur, please. We can talk about everything when I return.””
“When?””
“In a few days.””
“You booked a one-way ticket.””
Her face went white.
Arthur held out his hand.
“Give me the folder.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You're behaving like a paranoid man.””
“Then this should be easy. Open it.””
She clutched the folder against her chest.
“You don't understand what you're asking.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa looked past him, searching for an escape.
Arthur saw the calculation in her eyes.
For years, she had relied on charm, tears, and indignation to turn difficult conversations into arguments about her feelings. But he had learned something since seeing Nia on the front steps.
He no longer needed Vanessa to admit she had done something wrong before he could act to protect his daughter.
“Marcus has preserved the security footage,” Arthur said.
“We have recordings of you entering the archive room, taking Eleanor's files, and removing the silver box from Nia's bedroom.””
Vanessa's fingers trembled.
“You wouldn't use those against me.””
“I won't hide evidence to protect you.””
She stared at him.
Then, with a sudden movement, she pushed the folder into her handbag.
“Fine! You want the truth? Your precious daughter isn't the innocent little angel you think she is.””
Arthur's face hardened.
“Don't.””
“Eleanor knew something was wrong. She knew there was another baby. She spent years trying to make sure nobody found out.””
“Found out what?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
For one moment, Arthur thought she might finally tell him.
Instead, she whispered, “Ask Daniel what happened the night those babies were born.””
Then she turned toward the gate.
Arthur stepped in front of her.
“You're not boarding until we finish this conversation.””
A uniformed airport employee approached.
“Sir, is there a problem?””
Arthur immediately stepped back.
“My wife has documents belonging to me. I have asked her to return them, and she has refused. I'm not asking anyone to detain her. I want the matter handled lawfully.””
The employee nodded and called a supervisor.
Vanessa seized the opportunity.
“You see what he's doing? He's trying to control me!””
Arthur said nothing.
She looked at him, her voice suddenly soft.
“Darling, please. Think about Ava and Caleb. Think about the family we've built.””
Arthur felt a familiar ache at the mention of his younger children.
“I'm thinking about all three children,” he replied.
“That's why I'm not letting this disappear behind another lie.””
A supervisor arrived and asked Vanessa to step aside while they clarified the ownership of the documents. She protested, but eventually agreed to open her handbag.
The folder contained several pages of medical records, a photocopy of Nia's birth certificate, and a sealed envelope bearing Eleanor's handwriting.
The original birth certificate was missing.
Arthur picked up the envelope.
On the front, Eleanor had written:
For Daniel Rose. To be opened only if the truth becomes necessary.
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“You don't know what you're doing.””
“Then tell me.””
She shook her head.
“I can't.””
“Can't or won't?””
Vanessa looked at the envelope.
Then she leaned toward him.
“Because if you find out what happened that night, you'll lose the only family you have left.””
Arthur felt a chill run through him.
“Nia is my family.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You still don't understand.””
She looked toward the windows overlooking the runway.
Then she spoke so quietly that Arthur almost missed the words.
“The baby you brought home may not have been the baby Eleanor gave birth to.””
Arthur stared at her.
The terminal seemed to fall silent around them.
“You're lying.””
“Ask Daniel.””
“Show me proof.””
Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded sheet of paper. It was a hospital document bearing two infant identification numbers and two names.
One was Nia Elizabeth Carter.
The other was Olivia Rose Whitmore.
Arthur recognized the surname immediately.
Whitmore.
Vanessa's maiden name.
He looked up.
“Who is Olivia?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“My daughter.””
Arthur's stomach dropped.
“Your daughter?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She was born at the same hospital on the same night as Nia.””
Arthur read the document again.
Two infant identification numbers.
Two names.
One sealed investigation.
“Where is she?”” he demanded.
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
“Somewhere safe.””
“Where?””
“I can't tell you.””
Arthur stepped closer.
“Is she alive?””
Vanessa's tears spilled over.
“Yes.””
“Then why have you been hiding her?””
“Because Eleanor promised me that no one would ever separate us.””
Arthur felt as if the floor had shifted beneath him.
Eleanor had died believing she had raised her own daughter.
Vanessa had spent years living under his roof, treating Nia as an intruder.
And somewhere, another girl might have been growing up believing that she had been abandoned by her mother.
Arthur looked at the hospital document.
“Did you switch the babies?””
Vanessa recoiled.
“No!””
“Then explain how this happened.””
She shook her head desperately.
“I didn't do it. I was twenty-two years old. I had just given birth.
I was told my baby had complications, and then the hospital said she had been transferred. Eleanor was there with her newborn daughter. Daniel knew what happened, but nobody would tell me the truth.””
“Why did you marry me?””
Vanessa's silence was answer enough.
Arthur stepped back.
She had entered his life knowing his daughter might be connected to the child she had lost.
He remembered the way Vanessa had insisted that Nia move into the smaller guest bedroom when she first arrived. The way she had removed Eleanor's photographs from the hallway. The way she had looked at Nia with something colder than dislike.
“You knew who she was,” Arthur whispered.
Vanessa began to cry harder.
“I suspected.””
“And instead of protecting her, you punished her.””
“I couldn't look at her without thinking about Olivia!””
Arthur stared at his wife.
“Then you should have looked at your own pain instead of making a child pay for it.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Arthur took the document from her.
“I'm going to find Daniel. And I'm going to find Olivia.””
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“Arthur, please. If you love me at all, don't destroy everything.””
He gently removed her hand.
“You destroyed something when you decided my daughter deserved to suffer for a secret she didn't understand.””
He turned toward the exit.
Behind him, Vanessa called his name.
He did not look back.
But as he reached the private office, his phone rang.
Daniel Rose.
Arthur answered immediately.
“Daniel, I know about Olivia.””
There was a long silence.
Then Daniel said, “Where is Vanessa?””
“At the airport.””
“Did she give you the document?””
“Yes.””
Daniel exhaled.
“Then we have less time than I thought.””
Arthur tightened his grip on the phone.
“Tell me where Olivia is.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“She's in Savannah, Arthur. And she's been asking questions about her birth for years.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Eleanor made me promise to protect both girls until I could prove what happened.””
Arthur stared through the glass wall at Nia, who was waiting beside Marcus.
“I'm bringing Nia to you.””
“Good,” Daniel replied.
“But there's something else you need to know.””
“What?””
“The person who ordered the original hospital records sealed wasn't Eleanor.””
Arthur went still.
“Who was it?””
Daniel paused.
Then he answered.
“Your father.””
Arthur felt the blood drain from his face.
His father had been dead for twelve years.
May you like
And suddenly, the secret surrounding Nia's birth was no longer a family disagreement.
It was a legacy of deception that had begun long before Vanessa entered the mansion.
