Chapter 8: The Man Who Drove That Night

The warehouse stood beneath a gray sky, its broken windows reflecting the afternoon light.

David parked two blocks away.

He hadn't brought the USB.

He had made a copy.

The real drive remained with Michael.

At least, David hoped it did.

Daniel sat in the passenger seat.

“I told you to stay with Mrs. Collins.””

“She said I should come.””

David glanced at him.

“Why?””

“Because I know the building.””

David studied the boy.

“How?””

“Mom brought me here before.””

“For what?””

Daniel looked through the windshield.

“To show me something.””

David's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“What?””

Daniel pointed.

“Over there.””

David followed his finger.

A side entrance.

A rusted metal door.

Daniel spoke softly.

“That was where my dad fell.””

David stared at the building.

“What?””

“He didn't fall from the balcony.””

David turned toward him.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel's voice trembled.

“My mom pushed him.””

David's stomach twisted.

“You saw it?””

Daniel nodded.

“I was six.””

David looked away.

For a moment, the only sound was rain against the windshield.

“Why didn't you tell anyone?””

“She told me nobody would believe me.””

“She threatened you?””

“She told me if I talked, Ethan would die.””

David's blood went cold.

“She knew about Ethan even then?””

Daniel nodded.

“She said his father would eventually find out.””

David opened the car door.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“I know where the stairs are.””

David hesitated.

Then nodded.

They entered through the side door.

The warehouse smelled of rust, damp concrete, and oil.

Their footsteps echoed.

Daniel pointed toward a narrow corridor.

“This way.””

David followed.

They reached a stairwell.

Halfway up, Daniel stopped.

“She used to make me wait here.””

“For what?””

“For Victor.””

David stared at him.

“What did Victor do?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.””

A noise came from above.

David raised one finger.

Silence.

Then—

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Someone was coming down.

David pulled Daniel behind a concrete pillar.

Victor appeared.

He stopped halfway down the stairs.

“David.””

David stepped out.

“Where's my son?””

Victor smiled.

“Safe.””

“Bring him to me.””

“Not yet.””

David's voice hardened.

“You were there the night my wife died.””

Victor's smile disappeared.

“Yes.””

“Did you kill her?””

“No.””

“Who did?””

Victor looked toward Daniel.

The boy had stepped into view.

Victor's face changed.

“You shouldn't have brought him.””

David stepped between them.

“Answer me.””

Victor sighed.

“Your wife wasn't supposed to die.””

David stared.

“What?””

“She was supposed to be frightened.””

“Why?””

“She was going to expose Vanessa.””

“So Vanessa killed her?””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Victor looked at the stairs.

“She did.””

David froze.

“Who?””

“Your wife.””

“What?””

“She caused the crash.””

David stared at him.

“You're lying.””

“She drove her car off the road deliberately.””

“No.””

“She wanted to make it look like an accident.””

“Why would she kill herself?””

“She wasn't trying to die.””

Victor's voice dropped.

“She was trying to disappear.””

David's mind raced.

“Why?””

“Because she knew Vanessa was coming for Ethan.””

David shook his head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

Victor reached inside his jacket.

David tensed.

But Victor pulled out a photograph.

He handed it over.

It showed David's wife standing beside a different car.

Behind her was the same warehouse.

On the back was a date.

The day before her death.

David looked at Victor.

“She came here?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To meet someone.””

“Who?””

Victor's eyes moved toward Daniel.

“His father.””

David stared.

“Daniel's father was alive?””

“Then.””

“When did he die?””

“Two months after your wife.””

David's thoughts collided.

“What happened?””

“He was trying to expose Vanessa.””

Victor lowered his voice.

“She killed him too.””

A door slammed somewhere deeper in the warehouse.

Victor looked toward the sound.

“We don't have much time.””

David grabbed his arm.

“Where's Ethan?””

“Basement.””

“Take me there.””

Victor nodded.

They moved down the stairs.

The basement was dark.

A single bulb swung overhead.

Then David heard it.

“Daddy!””

He ran.

Ethan was sitting behind a metal gate.

David grabbed the bars.

“Ethan!””

“Daddy!””

“Are you hurt?””

“No!””

David looked at the lock.

Victor pulled out a key.

Before he could use it, a gunshot cracked through the basement.

Victor staggered.

David caught him.

Blood spread across Victor's jacket.

“Victor!””

Victor collapsed against the wall.

Daniel screamed.

A shadow appeared at the far end of the basement.

Vanessa stepped into the light.

She held the gun with both hands.

“You always were a fool, Victor.””

David stared at her.

“You shot him.””

“He betrayed me.””

“You kidnapped my son.””

“I rescued him.””

David laughed bitterly.

“You call this rescue?””

Vanessa looked toward Ethan.

“You don't understand what your wife did.””

“Tell me.””

“She stole everything.””

“What?””

“Your wife knew about Daniel's father.””

David froze.

Vanessa continued.

“She knew he was alive. She knew he wanted his son back.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You killed him.””

Vanessa's eyes moved to him.

“You saw nothing.””

“I saw you.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“You were six.””

“I remember.””

David stood between them.

“Why did my wife help Daniel?””

“Because she wanted to destroy me.””

“Why?””

Vanessa's expression became almost peaceful.

“Because she discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

Vanessa smiled.

“The truth about Ethan.””

David stared.

“What about him?””

Vanessa lowered the gun.

“Ask your wife.””

“She’s dead.””

“No.””

David's heart stopped.

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“She isn't.””

The basement went silent.

David shook his head.

“That's impossible.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Is it?””

Ethan looked confused.

“Daddy?””

David barely heard him.

Vanessa continued.

“Your wife has been alive this entire time.””

David's knees nearly gave out.

“Where?””

Vanessa raised the gun again.

“Somewhere you never thought to look.””

Then the warehouse lights suddenly came on.

Dozens of police officers flooded the basement.

“DROP THE WEAPON!””

Vanessa spun.

David threw himself over Ethan.

Victor, bleeding on the floor, smiled weakly.

“I told you…”

He coughed.

“…we didn't have much time.””

Vanessa dropped the gun.

And as officers handcuffed her, one detective walked toward David carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was an old photograph.

The detective looked at David.

“We found this in the woman's apartment.””

David stared at it.

His wife was standing beside a hospital bed.

May you like

Alive.

And holding a newborn baby.
