Chapter 2: A Father's Breaking Point

For several seconds, Darius couldn't move.

He stood in the doorway, staring at Kayla.

His little girl.

The child who used to run into his arms every morning.

The child who spent hours choosing colorful ribbons for her curls.

The child whose mother had once spent an entire afternoon carefully untangling a single knot because Kayla had fallen asleep with chewing gum in her hair.

Now she was sitting in front of the mirror with a nearly bald head.

Her cheeks were wet.

Her lavender dress was covered in pieces of her own hair.

Darius felt something inside his chest crack.

“Kayla?””

The little girl looked up.

“Daddy!””

She reached for him.

Darius crossed the room in two strides and dropped to his knees.

“Baby, come here.””

Kayla practically fell into his arms.

He held her tightly, one hand supporting the back of her head.

Then he felt the rough, uneven stubble.

His jaw tightened.

“Oh, sweetheart…”

Kayla started crying again.

“Daddy, she took my hair.””

Darius closed his eyes.

“Who did, baby?””

Kayla pointed over his shoulder.

“Brittany.””

Darius slowly turned.

Brittany stood near the counter, arms crossed.

Instead of looking ashamed, she appeared irritated.

“Darius, before you start shouting, you need to understand—”

“Don't.””

His voice cut through the room.

“Don't say another word.””

Brittany lifted her chin.

“I was helping her.””

Darius stared at her.

“Helping her?””

“Yes. Her hair was getting out of control. Someone needed to do something.””

He looked down at Kayla's head again.

“Do you call this helping?””

“She wouldn't cooperate, so I had to make a decision.””

“A decision?””

Darius stood.

“You shaved my daughter's head without asking me?””

Brittany sighed dramatically.

“It's hair, Darius. It grows back.””

Evelyn's face hardened.

“Mr. Mitchell, I heard Kayla begging her to stop. Brittany wouldn't listen.””

Brittany spun around.

“Stay out of this, Evelyn!””

Darius raised one hand.

“Evelyn, please stay with Kayla.””

Then he looked directly at Brittany.

“Did my daughter tell you she didn't want this?””

Brittany shrugged.

“She was being difficult.””

“Did she ask you to stop?””

“She was crying because she didn't understand.””

“Did she ask you to stop?””

Darius repeated the question, louder this time.

Brittany rolled her eyes.

“Yes! But children cry. That doesn't mean you let them run the house.””

The silence that followed was chilling.

Darius stared at her as though he were seeing a stranger.

“You heard her begging you.””

Brittany crossed her arms.

“She needs discipline.””

“She is six!””

“And you treat her like she's made of glass!””

Darius took a step forward.

“She just lost her mother. She is a little girl trying to grow up without the woman she loves most in the world. And you thought the best way to establish authority was to terrorize her?””

Brittany's expression twisted.

“Oh, here we go again. Renee.””

Darius went still.

“What did you say?””

Brittany threw her hands up.

“Every conversation comes back to Renee! Every decision! Every single thing in this house has to revolve around your dead wife and her precious little daughter!””

Evelyn gasped.

Kayla stopped crying for a moment.

She looked at Brittany with wide, frightened eyes.

Darius's voice dropped.

“Get out of my daughter's sight.””

Brittany laughed.

“You can't be serious.””

“I have never been more serious in my life.””

“Darius, we're getting married in six weeks.””

“Not if I have anything to say about it.””

Her smile vanished.

Darius turned away from Brittany and crouched in front of Kayla again.

“Sweetheart, look at Daddy.””

Kayla slowly raised her eyes.

“Am I in trouble?””

The question hit him harder than anything Brittany had said.

“No, baby. No.””

“But I moved.””

Darius frowned.

“What?””

“When she told me to sit still, I moved. I tried to stop her. Maybe that's why she got mad.””

Darius felt his throat tighten.

He gently held his daughter's tiny hands.

“Listen to me very carefully. You did absolutely nothing wrong.””

Kayla's eyes filled again.

“But she said I was bad.””

“You are not bad.””

“She said I had to listen because she's going to be my mommy.””

Darius went silent.

Then he brushed a tear from Kayla's cheek.

“Your mommy is your mommy, sweetheart. Nobody gets to take her place. And nobody gets to hurt you just because they want to be in this family.””

Kayla leaned against him.

“Can we go home?””

Darius looked around the room.

They were already home.

But he understood what she meant.

She wanted somewhere safe.

Somewhere Brittany couldn't reach her.

“Of course, baby.””

He kissed her forehead.

“Daddy's going to take care of everything.””

Evelyn gently helped Kayla down from the chair.

“I'll take her to her bedroom and get her comfortable.””

Darius nodded.

“Thank you, Evelyn.””

As Evelyn carried Kayla toward the door, the little girl looked back.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, princess?””

“Please don't let her cut my hair again.””

Darius's eyes burned.

“Never again.””

He watched them disappear down the hallway.

Then he turned around.

And whatever restraint he had been holding onto began to disappear.

Brittany was standing beside the counter, examining her reflection in the mirror.

She picked up a tissue and dabbed at a spot of makeup near her cheek.

“Are you finished making a scene?”” she asked.

Darius didn't answer immediately.

He looked at the scattered curls.

Some were long.

Some were short.

A few were tangled around the legs of the chair.

He crouched and picked up a small handful.

It was soft.

Beautiful.

And completely unnecessary to destroy.

“Do you know what this is?”” he asked.

Brittany glanced over.

“Hair.””

“These were the curls her mother used to brush every night.””

“Oh, please.””

“She used to sing to her while she did it.””

Brittany rolled her eyes.

“Are you going to stand there mourning a haircut all afternoon?””

Darius slowly rose.

“Renee died two years ago. Kayla still sleeps with one of her old scarves because it smells like her. She still asks me questions about her mother that I don't always know how to answer.””

He held up the handful of curls.

“And you knew exactly how much these meant to her.””

Brittany scoffed.

“I am not going to spend my life competing with a dead woman.””

“Then why did you choose to hurt the only person who still carries her memories?””

Brittany's face reddened.

“Because I'm tired of being treated like an outsider!””

“You made yourself one.””

“I have done everything for you!””

“Have you?””

“I've organized this house. I've planned the wedding. I've put up with your daughter constantly interrupting us. I've tried to make this family work!””

Darius stared at her.

“Put up with my daughter?””

“Yes!””

Brittany's voice grew louder.

“Every time I try to have a quiet moment with you, she appears. Every time I want something for myself, you remind me that Kayla comes first!””

Darius nodded slowly.

“Because she's my daughter.””

“And I'm supposed to come second forever?””

“She's six years old, Brittany. She depends on me.””

“You don't understand what I'm saying.””

“No. I understand perfectly.””

He stepped toward the counter.

Brittany watched him suspiciously.

“What are you doing?””

Darius picked up the electric clippers.

The machine was still lying beside the mirror.

He turned it over in his hand.

A low, angry silence settled over the room.

Brittany frowned.

“Put that down.””

Darius switched it on.

The buzzing sound filled the dressing room.

Brittany flinched.

“Darius?””

He looked at her reflection.

“You thought it was acceptable to stand behind a little girl and shave away something she loved while she begged you to stop.””

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“You told her that you were going to be her mother.””

“I am going to be your wife!””

“Then you should have understood what being part of this family meant.””

He took another step.

Brittany moved backward.

“What are you doing?””

Darius didn't answer.

The buzzing clippers remained in his hand.

Brittany looked from the machine to his face.

For the first time that afternoon, she seemed to understand that the situation was no longer under her control.

“Darius, stop playing games.””

He advanced another step.

“Now you want me to stop?””

Her mouth opened.

No words came out.

Outside the dressing room, Evelyn had just settled Kayla onto her bed.

She found a soft pink blanket and wrapped it around the little girl.

Kayla touched the top of her head.

“Miss Evelyn?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Will my curls grow back?””

Evelyn sat beside her.

“They will grow again, baby. It will take time, but they will.””

“Will they look the same?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“I don't know, sweetheart. But you will still be just as beautiful.””

Kayla looked toward the bedroom door.

“Is Daddy angry?””

Evelyn brushed a strand of hair away from Kayla's forehead.

“He's upset because someone hurt you.””

“I don't want Daddy to hurt anybody.””

Evelyn's hand stopped.

The little girl looked frightened.

“Daddy gets a loud voice when he's angry.””

Evelyn kissed her temple.

“Your daddy loves you very much. And it's not your job to worry about grown-up problems.””

A loud voice suddenly echoed from the dressing room.

“Now you want me to put it down?””

Evelyn stood immediately.

She walked toward the hallway.

Another sound followed.

The unmistakable buzz of electric clippers.

Evelyn's stomach tightened.

She hurried to the dressing-room doorway.

And what she saw made her freeze.

Darius was holding the clippers.

Brittany was backed against the vanity.

And the woman who had laughed while shaving a six-year-old girl's head was now looking absolutely terrified.

“Darius!”” Evelyn shouted.

But he didn't turn.

Brittany swallowed hard.

“Listen to me,” she whispered.

Darius stared at her.

“You had a choice.””

“Please.””

“You could have stopped.””

“I didn't mean to hurt her.””

He looked at the floor.

At the curls.

At the little pieces of a child's trust.

Then he raised his eyes again.

“You didn't mean to hurt her?””

Brittany nodded quickly.

“That's right. It was a misunderstanding.””

Darius let out a bitter laugh.

“A misunderstanding?””

“Yes. I was frustrated. I made a mistake.””

He took another step.

“Then perhaps you should understand what it feels like to have someone make a decision about your hair without your permission.””

Brittany pressed herself against the counter.

“Darius, we're engaged.””

He looked at the ring on her finger.

“You keep bringing that up as if it gives you ownership over my daughter.””

“I'm your future wife!””

“And she is my child!””

The words exploded through the room.

Brittany flinched.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Mr. Mitchell, please. Think about Kayla.””

He didn't move.

Brittany's eyes darted toward the doorway.

“Evelyn, tell him to stop!””

But Evelyn was staring at the clippers.

“Darius, sweetheart, listen to me.””

His grip tightened.

Brittany began shaking.

“Don't you dare touch my hair!””

Darius moved closer.

And then Brittany noticed something.

He wasn't looking at her face anymore.

He was looking at the long, perfectly styled hair falling over her shoulders.

The clippers buzzed between them.

Brittany raised both hands.

“Darius, please! We can talk about this!””

He stopped only a few feet away.

“Now you want to talk?””

“Yes!””

“You didn't give Kayla that opportunity.””

“I said I was sorry!””

“You haven't even apologized to her.””

Brittany's eyes filled with tears.

“Because you came charging in here like a madman!””

Evelyn stepped between them.

“Enough!””

But Darius was no longer listening.

He stared at Brittany's hair.

The same woman who had treated his daughter's curls like something worthless was now desperately protecting her own.

Darius raised the clippers.

Brittany let out a terrified gasp.

May you like

“NO!””

And just as he moved forward again, Evelyn realized she might not be able to stop what was about to happen.
