Chapter 2: The Man at the Gate
Daniel didn't take his eyes off Evelyn.
“What did you say?””
The guard swallowed.
“He says he has information about Mrs. Vale.””
Evelyn stood abruptly.
“That's ridiculous.””
Daniel noticed the panic in her voice.
“Who is he?””
“I don't know,” Evelyn said.
The guard answered for her.
“He gave the name Marcus Hale.””
Evelyn's face lost what little color remained.
Noah noticed.
So did Daniel.
“Evelyn?”” Daniel asked.
She shook her head.
“I've never heard that name.””
The lie came too quickly.
Daniel turned toward the guard.
“Bring him in.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“No.””
The word came out sharper than she intended.
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel slowly raised an eyebrow.
“Why not?””
“Because this is a private family event.””
“You just tried to convince everyone that Noah was a liar.””
Daniel glanced at the gardener.
“And now someone else has information about you.””
“Daniel, please.””
“Bring him in.””
The guard nodded.
Evelyn grabbed Daniel's arm.
“Don't do this.””
He looked down at her hand.
Then at her face.
“Why are you afraid of a stranger?””
She released him.
“I said I'm not afraid.””
“Then let him speak.””
The guard disappeared.
Noah remained beside the table, his phone still recording.
Daniel noticed.
“You can stop filming.””
Noah hesitated.
“Sir, I don't know what happens next.””
Daniel looked at him for several seconds.
“Neither do I.””
Noah lowered the phone but didn't turn it off.
A minute later, the front doors opened again.
A man in his late forties walked inside.
He wore a dark jacket, carried a worn leather folder, and had the exhausted appearance of someone who had driven a long distance without stopping.
He looked directly at Evelyn.
She stared back.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
The man nodded.
“Hello, Evelyn.””
Daniel looked between them.
“You said you didn't know him.””
Evelyn didn't answer.
Marcus walked closer.
“I didn't come here to embarrass you.””
“You should leave,” Evelyn said.
Marcus ignored her.
He looked at Daniel.
“My name is Marcus Hale. I worked for your wife three years ago.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“In what capacity?””
Marcus opened his folder.
“Financial consultant.””
Evelyn stepped toward him.
“Daniel, don't listen to him.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You told me you were going to explain everything.””
“Explain what?””
Daniel's voice was colder now.
Marcus placed a stack of documents on the table.
“Her plan.””
Evelyn's eyes flashed.
“Those documents are private.””
“So you admit they're yours?””
She stopped.
Marcus opened the folder.
“I handled several accounts connected to Mrs. Vale's family trust. Two years ago, she asked me to arrange a series of transfers.””
Daniel picked up the first document.
“What transfers?””
“Money moved into accounts she controlled.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“That was legitimate estate planning.””
Marcus nodded.
“That part was.””
He turned another page.
“The problem was what happened afterward.””
Daniel scanned the documents.
“Where did the money go?””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“She began purchasing life insurance.””
Daniel's fingers stopped.
The room became silent again.
“How much?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“Eight million dollars.””
Someone near the buffet gasped.
Evelyn shook her head.
“That policy was canceled.””
Marcus gave a bitter smile.
“One policy was.””
He removed another document.
“Then she bought another.””
Daniel looked at his wife.
“How many?””
Evelyn said nothing.
Marcus answered.
“Three.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“When?””
“Over the last eighteen months.””
Noah looked at Evelyn.
The pitcher sat between them like a loaded weapon.
Daniel placed the papers down.
“Who is the beneficiary?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then said, “Mrs. Vale.””
Evelyn's voice broke.
“I can explain.””
Daniel laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You've had plenty of opportunities.””
She reached for his hand.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
He pulled away.
“Did you put something in that juice?””
“No.””
Marcus spoke.
“Evelyn.””
She turned toward him.
“Don't.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“She contacted me six months ago.””
Evelyn's face tightened.
“She asked me how quickly a life insurance claim could be paid after a death.””
A guest whispered, “Oh my God.””
Daniel stared at Evelyn.
“Did you ask him that?””
“I was asking hypothetically.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You asked me how soon you could access the money if your husband died unexpectedly.””
Evelyn's breathing became ragged.
“That isn't evidence of anything.””
Daniel looked at Noah.
Then at the pitcher.
Then at the glass sitting untouched in front of Evelyn.
He walked to the table.
“Call the police.””
Evelyn stepped backward.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.””
“No, Daniel.””
“For the first time tonight, I'm going to stop asking questions.””
He took out his phone.
Evelyn turned toward the terrace.
Noah noticed.
“She's leaving.””
Evelyn froze.
Daniel turned.
“Where are you going?””
“I need air.””
“You can get air right here.””
She suddenly ran.
Two guards blocked her path.
“Move!””
“Mrs. Vale, please.””
“Move!””
She pushed one guard.
Daniel watched in disbelief.
“Evelyn.””
She stopped.
For a moment, their eyes met.
There was something in hers that Noah had never seen before.
Not sadness.
Not anger.
Desperation.
Then she looked toward the garden.
Noah followed her gaze.
The side gate was open.
He realized she wasn't looking for an exit.
She was looking for something.
“Check her room,” Marcus said.
Daniel turned.
“What?””
Marcus closed his folder.
“If she has been planning this for months, the documents won't be in her office.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Where would they be?””
Marcus stared at Evelyn.
“Somewhere she believed you'd never search.””
Evelyn's face changed again.
Daniel noticed.
He called security.
“Lock the gates.””
The guards moved immediately.
“No one leaves.””
Evelyn sank into a chair.
The reception was over.
No one cared about the music anymore.
No one touched the food.
Daniel stood beside the table while police were called.
Noah remained nearby.
After several minutes, Daniel approached him.
“I owe you an apology.””
Noah looked surprised.
“For what?””
“For treating you like you couldn't possibly know what you saw.””
Noah shook his head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Daniel looked at the shattered glass.
“You protected me.””
Before Noah could answer, one of the guards returned.
“Mr. Vale.””
“Yes?””
“We found the suitcase.””
Daniel frowned.
“What suitcase?””
“In Mrs. Vale's bedroom.””
The guard held up a small brass key.
“It was locked inside the bottom drawer of her dresser.””
Evelyn suddenly stood.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
The guard continued.
“There's a name written on the outside.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Whose?””
May you like
The guard glanced at Evelyn.
“Yours, sir.””
