Chapter 4: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to See

David had heard his wife lie before.

He had heard her explain away missing money, broken promises, and unexplained absences. He had watched her turn simple questions into arguments until he apologized for asking them.

But he had never heard Tasha sound afraid of a name.

“Who were you keeping Lily away from?”” David asked.

Tasha gripped the edge of the desk.

“You need to understand something first.””

“No. I've spent eight years listening to your explanations. This time, I'm asking the questions.””

“David, please.””

“Who is Ethan Mercer?””

Tasha's eyes moved toward the laptop.

For a moment, David thought she might answer.

Instead, she grabbed her phone and began dialing.

He stepped forward.

“Who are you calling?””

“My attorney.””

“Go ahead. I'll be calling mine, too.””

She lowered the phone.

“You don't know what you're doing.””

“Then help me understand.””

Tasha shook her head, her voice rising.

“You think everything can be solved with money and lawyers. You think people are either good or bad. The world doesn't work that way.””

“Neither does parenting. But pushing a six-year-old into a pool is pretty straightforward.””

Her face tightened.

“I told you it was an accident.””

“And I told you I watched the recording.””

David walked out before she could answer.

He found Martin, the head of security, waiting near the staircase. Martin had worked for the Hayes family for nearly fifteen years. He was a broad-shouldered man with silver hair, a quiet voice, and the habit of checking every door twice.

That afternoon, he looked unusually troubled.

“Sir, I've secured the archive,” Martin said.

“But there is a problem.””

“What kind of problem?””

“Several older files have been removed from the main server. The system shows that someone accessed the archive remotely last night.””

“Who?””

“The request came through an administrative account registered to Mrs. Hayes.””

David closed his eyes briefly.

“Can the files be recovered?””

“Some of them. There's an offline backup in the old security room.””

“Take me there.””

Martin led him through a service corridor and down a narrow staircase into the basement.

The security room smelled of dust and warm electronics. Monitors covered one wall, while old equipment sat in metal cabinets. Martin unlocked a drawer and removed a small black drive.

“This is the backup from the year before Lily was born,” he explained.

“We kept it because the original system was replaced after a power failure.””

David stared at the drive.

“Why would Tasha want footage from that far back?””

Martin hesitated.

“I don't know, sir. But there's one more thing.””

He opened a folder on the computer.

A list of archived recordings appeared. Most were labeled by date and camera location. One file had no location at all.

Its title read:

*PRIVATE STUDY — AUDIO AND VIDEO — RESTRICTED.*

David frowned.

“Why is there a camera in the study?””

“There wasn't supposed to be one, sir. It appears to have been installed temporarily during the old security upgrade.””

“Can you open it?””

Martin clicked the file.

The screen flickered.

A woman appeared in the grainy image, standing beside a desk. She was younger than David remembered Tasha being when they first met, but there was no mistaking her face.

She wore a cream blouse and held a telephone against her ear.

Tasha.

The timestamp showed a date twelve years earlier.

David leaned toward the monitor.

“What is she saying?””

Martin increased the volume.

At first, there was only static.

Then Tasha's voice emerged.

“I told you, Michael. I am not giving him back to you.””

A man's voice answered through the telephone.

“You don't get to decide that, Tasha. The court order says I can collect Ethan tomorrow.””

“You'll never take him from me.””

“You've already lost custody.””

“Because you lied!””

“Because the hospital called child services after he told them what happened.””

Tasha slammed her free hand against the desk.

“He fell!””

“Then why did you tell the nurse he wasn't home?””

David's stomach tightened.

On the recording, Tasha turned away from the phone and paced across the room.

“Listen to me carefully,” she said.

“If you tell anyone about what happened in this house, I'll make sure you never see him again.””

Michael's voice became quieter.

“You're threatening me?””

“I'm telling you what will happen.””

The recording crackled.

Then came a sentence that made David straighten.

“You don't understand,” Tasha said.

“If Ethan tells them what he saw, they'll take everything from me.””

The call ended.

Tasha stood motionless for several seconds.

Then she opened a drawer and pulled out a small photograph.

She stared at it before whispering, “I won't let him ruin my life.””

The video stopped.

David stepped away from the monitor.

Martin said nothing.

“Is there more?””

“Yes, sir. The archive contains another file from the following morning.””

Martin opened it.

The image showed the mansion's front entrance. A young boy stood beside a man in a dark coat. The child wore a blue jacket and held a stuffed dinosaur.

Ethan.

A woman stood inside the doorway.

Tasha.

The boy reached for her.

“Mommy, please come with us.””

Tasha didn't move.

“Ethan, go with your father.””

“But I want you.””

“Don't make this harder than it needs to be.””

The boy's eyes filled with tears.

“Did I do something bad?””

Tasha looked away.

Michael crouched beside his son.

“No, buddy. You didn't do anything wrong.””

Ethan looked up at his mother one last time.

“Will you come see me?””

Tasha remained silent.

Michael took the boy's hand and led him toward the waiting car.

Just before they reached it, Ethan turned around.

“Mommy!””

Tasha closed the door.

David stared at the screen.

He remembered Lily standing beside the pool, offering her mother a handmade gift. He remembered her asking whether she was in trouble.

Did I do something bad?

The same question.

The same frightened eyes.

The same mother refusing to reach out.

“Stop the recording,” David said.

Martin paused it.

David rubbed his face.

“Was there a report filed about Ethan's injury?””

“Yes, sir. Our old records show that the incident was investigated. But the final report isn't in the main archive.””

“Where is it?””

“I don't know.””

David turned toward him.

“Find it.””

Martin nodded.

As he searched, David's phone rang.

The unknown number.

He answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

A man's voice replied, cautious and tired.

“My name is Michael Mercer.””

David gripped the phone.

“Ethan's father?””

“Yes.””

“Why did you send me that photograph?””

“Because I heard about what happened to your daughter.””

David went still.

“How?””

“Someone who used to work for Tasha contacted me. She said your wife had pushed Lily into the pool and was trying to convince you it was an accident.””

David glanced at Martin.

“Who contacted you?””

“I promised not to give her name without permission. But I can tell you this: Tasha has been doing the same thing for years. She hurts someone, then makes everyone around her feel guilty for noticing.””

David swallowed.

“What happened to Ethan?””

Michael was quiet for a moment.

“He was four when his mother injured him. She grabbed his arm and shoved him away during an argument. He fell against the staircase.””

“Did she intend to hurt him?””

“I don't know. I wasn't there when it happened. I only know what Ethan told the hospital staff, and what the investigation found.””

David looked at the frozen image of the little boy outside the front door.

“Why didn't you tell me sooner?””

“Because I tried to stay away from her. For years, I believed keeping Ethan safe meant keeping our lives separate from hers.””

“And now?””

“Now I hear she's treating another child the way she treated mine.””

David's voice softened.

“Where is Ethan?””

“He's twenty years old now. He lives in Boston. He's studying engineering and trying to build a life that doesn't revolve around his childhood.””

“Does he know what's happening?””

“Not yet.””

“Does he want to see his mother?””

Michael sighed.

“That's not a question I can answer for him.””

David looked down at the security drive.

“Can you send me the final report from the investigation?””

“I can send you what I have. But there's something you should know before you read it.””

“What?””

“Ethan told the investigators that his mother wasn't alone the night he got hurt.””

David's blood ran cold.

“Who was with her?””

“That's the part nobody could prove.””

Michael paused.

“Ethan said there was another child in the house. A little girl. He said his mother told him never to mention her.””

David's mouth went dry.

“A little girl?””

“Yes.””

“Did he know her name?””

Michael took a breath.

“He said her name was Lily.””

The security room seemed to shrink around David.

Lily had been born years after the incident. The dates didn't make sense.

Unless someone had lied about when something happened.

Unless the records he had just seen were only part of the story.

David looked at Martin.

“Find every record connected to Lily's birth. Every hospital document, every custody filing, every name attached to the case.””

Martin nodded and returned to the computer.

David kept the phone against his ear.

“Michael, I need to speak with your son.””

“I'll ask him.””

“Please tell him my daughter is safe. I won't let Tasha near her until I know the truth.””

Michael's voice hardened.

“Don't make promises you can't keep.””

The line went silent.

David lowered the phone.

On the monitor, Ethan's younger self still stood outside the front door, clutching his stuffed dinosaur.

A little boy waiting for his mother to choose him.

David thought of Lily's handmade gift floating in the pool.

Then he noticed something on the security screen.

The file's final frame showed Tasha standing behind the glass door, watching Michael's car disappear.

She wasn't looking at the car.

She was looking toward the upstairs window.

Toward the room that had belonged to a child.

Martin zoomed in.

A small figure stood behind the curtains.

A little girl with a yellow ribbon in her hair.

David whispered, “Who are you?””

And then the screen went black.

Someone had just remotely disconnected the archive.

Martin spun toward the control panel.

“Sir, someone is inside the system.””

David's phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.
