Chapter 6: The Letter That Could Destroy Them Both

James read the disputed letter a second time.

Then a third.

The document looked convincing.

It carried the correct corporate logo, the correct registered address, and a reference number matching the format used by Miller Coastal Properties.

It even included a digital signature block.

But the authorization was false.

James knew because he had never approved it.

“Daniel, who received this?””

“Harborstone Capital's legal department. They forwarded it to us this morning with a demand for confirmation.””

“Did they send the original?””

“No. Only a scanned copy.””

James pointed at the signature.

“Have our legal team check the certificate.””

Daniel nodded.

“I've already asked them.””

James walked to the window.

Outside, Noah was showing Marcus his drawing.

The security officer leaned down to examine it.

Noah pointed at the little white yacht he had sketched.

James smiled briefly.

Then he turned back to the office.

“Daniel, I want the original digital record from our document management system. Every access attempt, every download, every modification.””

“Understood.””

“And nobody contacts Edward until our legal department has secured the evidence.””

Daniel nodded.

“Of course.””

The door opened.

Victoria returned.

Her face was pale, but her expression had changed. She was no longer trying to defend herself with anger.

She looked like someone who had finally realized how much she didn't know.

“I spoke to our general counsel,” she said.

James turned.

“What did they say?””

“They've never seen the twelve-million-dollar investor arrangement.””

Daniel placed the report in front of her.

Victoria scanned it.

“Our legal department has also confirmed that Edward created Whitmore Coastal Ventures without my knowledge.””

James remained silent.

She looked up.

“And there's something else.””

“What?””

“Edward moved the company's original property documents into a separate storage facility last month.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“He told our finance director they were being reorganized.””

James studied her.

“Do you know where?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“An office building in Manhattan. A private document storage company.””

“Do you have access?””

“I used to. Edward changed the authorization list.””

James glanced at Daniel.

“Get the address.””

Victoria reached into her handbag and removed a small notebook.

She flipped through several pages.

“I wrote it down when he mentioned it.””

She found the entry and handed it to Daniel.

He copied the address.

James looked at her.

“Why did you keep it?””

Victoria gave a tired laugh.

“Because my brother forgets that I remember things.””

For the first time, James saw something other than arrogance in her expression.

He saw fear.

And perhaps a little shame.

“Did you ever sign anything related to the marina without reading it?”” he asked.

Victoria looked down.

“Yes.””

“How many documents?””

“I don't know.””

“Victoria.””

She looked up.

“Three. Maybe four.””

James exhaled slowly.

“That's not good.””

“I trusted him.””

“Trust isn't a substitute for reviewing a contract.””

“I know that now.””

Daniel returned to his desk.

“Sir, the legal team has responded.””

James approached the monitor.

The digital signature certificate on the disputed letter had been created using an account belonging to a former administrative employee.

Her name was Sarah Collins.

James frowned.

“Sarah left the company two years ago.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

“Was her account deactivated?””

“It should have been.””

James turned.

“Should have been?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Our preliminary logs show that the account was accessed three weeks ago.””

Victoria stared.

“By whom?””

Daniel opened the security report.

The access originated from an external network.

But the login request had been authenticated using a company device.

A device assigned to the executive office.

James's eyes narrowed.

“Which executive?””

Daniel checked the asset register.

Then he looked up.

“Edward Whitmore was issued that device during a meeting with Harborstone Capital last year.””

Victoria sat down heavily.

“No.””

Daniel didn't respond.

She shook her head.

“Edward couldn't have accessed your internal system.””

James pointed to the screen.

“Someone did.””

“Maybe he was given access by someone else.””

“That's possible.””

James looked at Daniel.

“Find out who.””

Daniel nodded.

Victoria stood and began pacing.

“My brother wouldn't risk everything over a marina.””

James watched her.

“You'd be surprised what people risk when they believe the reward is large enough.””

She stopped.

“Why are you helping me?””

The question caught him off guard.

James looked at her.

“I'm protecting my company.””

“That's not what I mean.””

She glanced toward Noah.

“You could simply cancel my berth, remove me from the marina, and let my company deal with the consequences.””

James shook his head.

“I could.””

“Then why haven't you?””

“Because I don't know everything yet.””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“And because of Noah?””

James didn't answer.

She continued.

“He was just a little boy. He didn't deserve what I said to him.””

“No, he didn't.””

“I shouldn't have spoken to him that way.””

James's expression remained guarded.

“Then you should apologize.””

Victoria nodded.

“I will.””

James looked at her.

“Not because you now know who his father is.””

She swallowed.

“I understand.””

At that moment, the door opened.

Noah walked into the office holding his drawing.

“Dad?””

James turned immediately.

“Hey, buddy.””

Noah approached the table.

“I finished it.””

He placed the paper in front of his father.

It showed a large white yacht, a smaller sailing boat, and several people standing on a wooden dock.

At the bottom, Noah had written:

*EVERYONE SHOULD GET TO SEE THE OCEAN.*

James smiled.

“That's beautiful.””

Noah shrugged.

“I thought you might like it.””

“I love it.””

Victoria stared at the drawing.

She looked at the small figure in worn black sneakers standing beside the yacht.

Then she looked at Noah.

“Can I say something?””

Noah glanced at his father.

James nodded.

“You can listen if you want, buddy.””

Victoria crouched slightly, careful not to invade his space.

“Noah, I'm sorry for the way I treated you earlier.””

Noah said nothing.

“I shouldn't have insulted your shoes or made you feel like you didn't belong here.””

She paused.

“I was wrong.””

Noah looked at her.

“Are you still mad about my shoes?””

Victoria's eyes filled slightly.

“No.””

“Because I can clean the deck if it's dirty.””

Victoria shook her head.

“You don't have to clean anything.””

Noah considered that.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.””

He returned to his father.

James placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Thank you for apologizing,” he said to Victoria.

She stood.

For a brief moment, the room felt almost peaceful.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

He listened.

His expression became serious.

“Are you certain?””

A pause.

“Send it immediately.””

He ended the call.

James turned.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at the ownership records on the monitor.

“The document storage company has confirmed that someone collected the original Whitmore property files this morning.””

Victoria's face tightened.

“Who?””

Daniel checked the report.

“Edward Whitmore.””

“When?””

“Approximately two hours ago.””

Victoria grabbed her phone.

“He knew we were going to look for them.””

James nodded slowly.

“Apparently.””

Daniel continued.

“But that's not the most concerning part.””

He opened another attachment.

It contained a photograph from the storage facility's security camera.

Edward was standing beside a black SUV.

He wasn't alone.

A second man stood beside him, holding a thick envelope.

James leaned closer.

He recognized the man immediately.

“That's Richard Hayes.””

Daniel nodded.

“Harborstone Capital's managing partner.””

Victoria stared at the photograph.

“Why would Richard be with my brother?””

James enlarged the image.

The second man was handing Edward something.

A document.

Victoria looked closer.

Then her face went completely white.

She recognized the blue folder.

It was the same folder her father had kept in his private office before he died.

The folder containing the original deeds and corporate ownership records of Whitmore Holdings.

She had spent months searching for it after her father's death.

Edward had told her it was lost.

Now it was in his possession.

“That's my father's folder,” she whispered.

James looked at her.

“What's inside it?””

Victoria shook her head.

“I don't know everything. My father never allowed us to access it without him.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because it contained the original ownership structure of the family company.””

Daniel enlarged the photograph again.

There was a small white label on the folder.

James could just make out the handwritten words.

*TRUST AGREEMENT — FINAL BENEFICIARIES.*

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.””

James turned.

“What?””

“My father created a private trust before he died.””

“Who were the beneficiaries?””

Victoria stared at the screen.

“I thought it was just Edward and me.””

James waited.

She continued, her voice trembling.

“But my father told me there was one more person.””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“Who?””

Victoria shook her head.

“He never told me.””

James studied the photograph.

Then he looked at the date stamp.

Edward had collected the folder less than two hours before the ownership dispute surfaced.

And now James understood why the Whitmore brother was so desperate to keep the original documents hidden.

The marina dispute might not be about a marina at all.

It might be about who truly owned Whitmore Holdings.

Victoria reached for the table to steady herself.

“My father said the third beneficiary would only be revealed when the company faced a serious ownership challenge.””

James looked at her.

“Did he explain why?””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

She stared at the photograph of her brother.

Then she whispered:

“Because he said that person would have the final say over everything.””

A new email appeared on Daniel's screen.

It came from the Whitmore family attorney.

The subject line contained only six words.

*URGENT — THE TRUST BENEFICIARY HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.*

Daniel opened it.

James read the first line.

Then he slowly turned toward Victoria.

“Victoria,” he said quietly.

“Your father didn't leave the controlling interest to you or Edward.””

She looked at him.

“Then who did he leave it to?””

James glanced at the document.

May you like

And the name printed beneath the words Final Beneficiary was someone neither of them had expected.

Noah Miller.
