Chapter 1: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Broken
“You lost everything, Ethan. Even me!””
Brooke's voice sliced through the gold-and-cream ballroom, loud enough to silence the nearest tables.
She grabbed the lapel of Ethan Cole's black suit and yanked it toward her. A splash of red wine ran down his white shirt, staining the fabric beneath his collar.
Behind her, Chad Reynolds burst into laughter.
“Careful, sweetheart,” Chad said, raising his champagne glass.
“You might damage what's left of the poor guy.””
Several guests turned to look.
Some whispered. Others pretended not to notice.
Ethan sat motionless in his wheelchair, his hands gripping the armrests. His expression remained unreadable, but the muscles in his jaw tightened.
Brooke leaned closer.
“Look at you,” she whispered, although her voice was deliberately loud enough for the surrounding guests to hear.
“Two years ago, you promised me the world. Now you can't even stand up to defend yourself.””
Chad chuckled.
“Technically, he can't stand up at all.””
The laughter spread.
At the far end of the ballroom, a young server named Grace Bennett froze with a silver tray in her hands.
She had been working at the prestigious Ashford Hotel for only three months. She had seen wealthy guests behave badly, but something about this scene made her stomach turn.
Ethan didn't look angry.
He looked like a man who had already endured something far worse than public humiliation.
Brooke adjusted the diamond bracelet on her wrist.
It was expensive. Extremely expensive.
And Ethan recognized it immediately.
He had purchased that bracelet two weeks before the accident, when he still believed Brooke was the woman he would marry.
“Do you remember this?”” Brooke asked, holding her wrist near his face.
“You gave it to me before everything went wrong.””
Ethan glanced at the bracelet.
“I remember.””
“Well, at least one thing from our relationship survived.””
Chad slipped an arm around her waist.
“Don't waste your evening on him, Brooke. We have better things to celebrate.””
Brooke smiled and kissed Chad's cheek.
Then she looked back at Ethan.
“Actually, I think he deserves to know something.””
Ethan raised his eyes.
“What?””
Brooke tilted her head.
“Chad and I are getting married next month. At the same estate where you proposed to me.””
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
“That seems unnecessary,” Ethan said quietly.
Brooke laughed.
“Unnecessary? You should be grateful I invited you.””
Chad stepped forward and placed a hand on the wheelchair's handle.
“Maybe we should get him a better view of the dance floor.””
Before Ethan could respond, Chad pushed the wheelchair several feet backward.
Its rear wheel struck the edge of a decorative table.
A glass tipped over.
Wine splashed across Ethan's shirt and onto the carpet.
“Oops,” Chad said.
Brooke covered her mouth, pretending to be surprised.
“Oh, Chad!””
“Sorry, mate. Didn't see you there.””
Ethan's fingers tightened around the armrests.
He could have shouted.
He could have called security.
Instead, he looked directly at Chad.
“Take your hand off my chair.””
Chad's smile widened.
“Or what?””
“Chad,” Brooke said, laughing, “leave him alone. You're frightening him.””
That's when Grace approached.
She set down her tray, grabbed a clean linen napkin, and knelt beside Ethan.
“Sir, may I?””
Ethan looked at her.
“It's all right. You don't need to do that.””
Grace gently dabbed the wine from his shirt.
“You don't deserve this,” she whispered.
For the first time that evening, Ethan's expression changed.
Not much.
Just enough for Grace to notice.
“Thank you,” he said.
Brooke rolled her eyes.
“That's sweet. The waitress has found herself a charity project.””
Grace stood.
“I'm doing my job, ma'am.””
“No,” Brooke replied, pointing at Ethan.
“You're embarrassing yourself. He's not worth the trouble.””
Chad laughed and reached for his champagne.
“Come on, Brooke. Let's go. This place is full of people who matter.””
Ethan looked down at his hands.
Then he slowly removed them from the armrests.
Grace noticed first.
His right hand moved to the metal frame of the wheelchair.
His left hand followed.
He leaned forward.
“Sir?”” Grace whispered.
Ethan planted both feet firmly on the polished marble floor.
Then he pushed himself upward.
One inch.
Two.
His knees trembled.
His shoulders tightened.
And then, in front of nearly two hundred guests, Ethan Cole stood.
The ballroom went silent.
Grace dropped the napkin.
Brooke's champagne glass slipped from her fingers and shattered against the marble.
“Ethan?!””
Her face had turned white.
“You can WALK?!””
Chad stumbled backward.
“What the hell?””
Ethan straightened his jacket.
He took one careful step forward.
Then another.
“Good evening, Brooke.””
She stared at his legs as though they belonged to someone else.
“But… the doctors said…”
“The doctors said I might never walk again,” Ethan replied.
“They didn't say I never would.””
Chad looked between them.
“You've been pretending?””
Ethan turned toward him.
“I've been recovering.””
“For how long?””
“Long enough.””
Brooke grabbed Ethan's sleeve.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
He gently removed her hand.
“Would it have changed anything?””
Her lips parted.
“I was your fiancée!””
“You were.””
“Ethan, I was devastated when the accident happened!””
He looked at the bracelet on her wrist.
“Really?””
Brooke swallowed.
“Of course.””
Ethan's eyes hardened.
“You abandoned me when I needed you.””
The words landed harder than any shout.
Two years earlier, when Ethan's car had crashed on a rain-soaked highway, Brooke had been the first person he called.
She had answered.
She had promised to come.
But she never arrived.
Three days later, she sent him a message ending their engagement.
A week after that, she disappeared with Chad.
And six months later, Ethan discovered that several important documents from his company had gone missing.
Documents that had been in Brooke's possession.
Now, standing in the middle of the ballroom, he finally understood why she looked so frightened.
An attendant in a dark suit approached from the entrance.
He carried a cream-colored document folder.
“Mr. Cole,” the attendant said respectfully.
“Everything is ready.””
Ethan accepted the folder.
Brooke stared at it.
“What is that?””
Ethan didn't open it.
He simply held it against his chest.
Then he looked at Brooke.
“Now let's talk about what you stole.””
Her face drained of color.
And Chad stopped smiling.
May you like
Because neither of them had expected Ethan Cole to walk into that ballroom.
Or to walk out with the truth.
